Notice that McDonalds are everywhere!!! Now, let’s get back to Book Week. What a great week it was. There were activities for everyone; some students really enjoyed sharing their favourite book with another student on Tuesday. The activities are always popular, and on Wednesday so many of the children worked with and got to know other students in some very enjoyable activities. They also got to enjoy hearing a number of new stories; those shortlisted for this year’s Literary Awards. Then on Thursday so many parents shared our book character parade. Book Week is always a wonderful time, and children learn more about literacy whilst having a great time. We would have also had a visiting author, but our booking has been made for 11th September.

PERFORMING ARTS

Our Year 5 and 6 students have been studying some of our greatest musicians (Composers) within the Classical Period. The students had a choice to present

their work in one of the following ways: PowerPoint, Oral presentation or poster. We also had the opportunity to listen to musical works that were created by these amazing artists. Here is some information they would like to share with you.

Antonio Vivaldi 1678 -1741 Baroque Period

Antonio Lucio Vivaldi was born in Venice, Italy, which is

where he spent most of his life. His father taught him to play the violin, and the two would often perform together. Antonio continued to study and practice the violin, even after he became a priest. He was called the "Red Priest" because of his flaming red hair. However, after a while, his bad asthma kept Antonio from saying Mass. After that, Vivaldi spent all his time writing music and teaching. He taught at an orphanage for girls, and wrote a lot of music for the girls to play. People came from miles around to hear Vivaldi's talented students perform the beautiful music he had written. At the age of 25, Antonio Vivaldi was named master of violin at the Ospedale della Pietà (Devout Hospital of Mercy) in Venice. He composed most of his major works in this position over three decades Many people think Vivaldi was the best Italian composer of his time. He wrote concertos, operas, church music and many other compositions. In all, Antonio wrote over 500 concertos. His most famous set of concertos is The Four Seasons.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart 1756 -1791

Classical Period

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg, Austria,

where his father Leopold was a violinist and composer. Wolfgang (or Wolferl, as his family called him) was a child prodigy. He composed his first piece of music at age five; he had his first piece published when he was seven; and he wrote his first opera when he was twelve. By the time Wolfgang was 6, he was an excellent pianist and violinist. He and his sister Maria Anna (known as Nannerl) traveled all over Europe performing for royalty. When he grew up, Mozart moved to Vienna, and tried to earn a living as a pianist and composer. But he had a lot of trouble handling the fact that he was no longer a child prodigy. Mozart was still a musical genius, but after he stopped being a cute kid, people stopped making a big fuss over him. Back then, musicians were treated like servants, but Mozart did not, and could not think of himself as a servant. Mozart was only 35 when he died. During his short life, he composed in all different musical forms, including operas, symphonies, concertos, masses, and chamber music. Today, he is still considered a genius!

“Love, love, love- that is the soul of genius”- Wolfgang Mozart

Giacomo Puccini 1858 -1924

Late Romantic Period

Giacomo Antonio Domenico Michele Secondo Maria Puccini

came from a long line of musicians. His father was a choirmaster and organist and it was expected that Giacomo would follow in his footsteps. When his father died, he actually inherited his positions although he was only six years old. Before he could take them on as an adult, however, he went to hear a performance of Verdi’s

Aida. From that moment on he knew that what he wanted to do was compose operas.

It took a while for Puccini to achieve this goal, but

eventually his works became successful. He was eventually regarded as the successor to the great Verdi. In 1896 he wrote La Bohème, which is probably the most loved opera ever written. This was followed by several others, including Madame Butterfly, Tosca, Turandot and The Girl of the Golden West.

Puccini was very successful financially as well as

musically. When he died in 1924 he left over four million dollars!

“Art is a kind of illness”- Giacomo Puccini

Richard Strauss 1864 -1949 Late Romantic

Period

Richard Strauss was a German composer born in Munich

in 1864. He was taught music by his father and composed from the age of six until his death in 1949. Strauss had a fairly comfortable life and experienced a rare burst of creativity in his last decade. Famous pieces include ‘Don Juan’ (1888) and’ Also Sprach Zarathustra’ (1896).

BOOK WEEK STORIES AND PHOTOS

Recounts from Group 5 On my fantastic week it was Book Character Parade. I dressed up as a Pirate. When I got to school everybody looked outstanding. After a little while Group 5 went to the COLA. We went around in a circle and the CD started

playing a song. It was really fun and I was so excited. After all the groups went around we got to play outside. I loved everybody’s costume. It was so great. After we finished the day went on and the bell went. I had an amazing day. I wish it would happen all over again. I had a fun time. Angelica

Last week was our Book Week. There was Book Sharing, Book Activity Day and The Book Character Parade. First we had our Book Sharing Day. We shared with Group 4, when we arrived. I went with Chantel first. After Chantel, I went over to Thomas. He taught me two new words, exasperating and embroiding. My book was ‘Naught Stories for Good Boys and Girls’. On Wednesday it was book activity day. I was in the Buttons Group with Chantelle. We went to Groups 9, 10, 11 and 12. I loved all of them especially Group 11. Lastly, the Book Character Parade! I dressed up as Rapunzel. I was surprised that we were first up. I was also sad because my dad wasn’t there. I felt embarrassed and nervous. Last week had to be the best week this year. AWESOME!!! The Book Character Parade was the best. I had lots of fun and I saw lots of creative characters and lots of funny costumes. I was Kiba from the TV show Yu Gi Oh Classic. The Book Sharing day was exciting and interesting. I shared with Vinnie and James from Group 5. Their books were Thor and Boy Vs Beast. Mine was Geronimo Stilton, The Dragon Prophecy. Book Activity Day I was imagining what we were going to do and then my prediction was completely changed but I still had fun. My favourite activity was The Swap book. We chose an animal and decorated it. I used glitter.
