EDITORS NOTEappy New Year! Can you believe its 2015?! It feels like yesterday when I first completed the January 2012 issue, which was the first edition I

featured a cover story, the famed chef, Geoffrey Zakarian. Its been 3 wonderful years since then. I can honestly and unequivocally say that the magazine is better in every imaginable way and I am proud of my staff for working hard and bringing

readers content that is enjoyable and useful!

This month happens to be one of the most beautiful editions Ive had the pleas-ure to work on. Thats for two simple reasons - our cover stories. We were lucky enough to secure two fabulous covers and decided to use both! Countess Luann de Lesseps, star of Real Housewives of New York and etiquette maven, graces one of them. We were so thrilled to work with her! She is beyond gorgeous and exceedingly gracious and we were thrilled to shoot exclusive images with her at The Warwick Hotel, with whom she partners to bring guests one-of-a-lifetime ex-periences in the city she loves! Take a look at those stunning photos and read her intriguing story! Our other cover is younger sister of Steven Spielberg, Nancy. She too is a great beauty and immensely talented. We sat down with her to discuss her new film project, Above and Beyond. A resident of the city, she contributes much

to our cultural landscape and we thank her for it!

We also introduce our new medical expert, Rafael G. Magana, M.D. He writes of phi - the idea of the perfectly balanced face. Youll learn a lot that you can take with you before you make a decision to have cosmetic surgery. In addition, we have great spas, non invasive laser lipo treatments and how to make sure your feet stay healthy during the winter! This is a section we take great pride and it will

continue to grow in the coming year!

Another new section is our In the Neighborhood feature. This month we feature the Upper East Side. From dining, new store openings, the offerings of the 92Y and real estate/interior design news, weve got you covered! Use this as your guide for the best of the best! The UES is our home and we hope it shines through!

    THE RESIDENT ALIENBy George Wayne

he first time I ever visited Los Ange-les, California in 1992, I stayed at the

Chateau Marmont and met the artist Ed Ruscha by the hotels iconic pool. On my latest visit to L.A. a few weeks ago, I thought of that moment of meeting the fabled artist who is as synonymous with Los Angeles as any American artist dead or alive. I was admiring his work along with other artists - Barbara Kruger first and foremost during my very first visit to The Los Angeles County Museum of Art or LACMA as it is known, imposed so beautifully along palm tree lined Wilshire Boulevard in LA. But the truly must-see exhibition still running at LAC-MA and most definitely worth the trip to LA alone just to see it is the Samurai: Japanese Armor From The Ann And Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Collection, which runs through February 1, 2015 inside The Resnick Pavilion of LACMA. Its a bold, magnetic and eye-catching presentation exploring the subject of the fabled Japanese ideal machismo - their famous Samurai warrior.

This is a major exhibition featuring the most amazing battle gear especially, worn by samurai from the 12th century

through the 19th century. Fascinating samurai accouterments through the centuries with full

life size figures both man and steed in full mo-tion to capture the spirit of the famed Japa-

nese warrior. When we think about the figure of the warrior throughout his-tory, there are more iconic representa-tions than the samurai in Japan. That from Michael Govan, the LACMA CEO who also could not have been lost on the fact that Tom Cruise also anointed the samurai on screen in his classic opus The Last Samurai as he thought about signing on this fascinating and big hit exhibition for his LACMA.

So on this recent visit to Los Angeles, GW decided to broaden his horizons and instead of staying where most New Yorkers convene when in LA along the Sunset Strip corridor between the Bev-erly Hills Hotel and the Chateau Mar-mont. I decided to stay way downtown in the hip and emerging Koreatown neigh-borhood of Los Angeles. And as usual, your astute arbiter was right on point. The Line Hotel in the heart of trendy Ko-reatown has become the anchor, along with the Standard Downtown, for the hip Los Angeles demi-monde.

Its Restaurant Week right now until

THE RESIDENT ALIEN mid February when the fabulous Los Ange-les Tourism & Convention Board showcases Los Angeles cuisine, featuring specially priced fare at more than 350 leading L.A. restau-rants including Fig & Olive and Craft. I also enjoyed a night dancing at Giorgios at the Standard Hotel on Sunset with the legendary LA impresario Bryan Rabin. GW did that one night in November and took a long a fabu-lously hip dude I met staying at The Line Hotelit turns out Peter Xu is one of the coolest, smartest, sweetest, hip-pest Chinese dudes I have ever met. And we have become great friends!

He is the coolest dude that lives in Shanghai right now. Not that he is ever there. When he was leaving L.A. after we met he was headed home to Shanghai on China Southern Airlines to say hello to his family and regroup and catch another plane to Shang-hai to somehow make his way to Sao Paolo, Brazil and San Paolo Fashion Week. Such is the lifestyle of an inter-national superstar blogger.

And so it was on that very same day I was reading a copy of that days issue of the Daily News while being chauf-feured in a mini-van down driving by 5555 Melrose Avenue and the iconic gates of the legendary Paramount Pic-tures. And I read that Matthew McCo-naughey and his wife had a fight on the red carpet at about the same time on that same day in Hollywood, GW

was on the back of a thoroughbred horse by the name of Ace and riding this dusty trail at sunset by the iconic Hollywood sign just above my head - an arms length away it sometime seemed as we cantered along scarily close to the deep crevasses and preci-pice of the mountain overlooking all of Los Angeles. GW also recommends this a must do for the New Yorker who wants to really

play tourist in Los Angeles. You must get in touch immediately with lila Joy Ginsburg at the Sunset Ranch in Hollywood at 3400 North Beechwood Drive in the heart of Hollywood. Horseback riding at sunset is not for the faint of heart - trust me. Those horses have a mind of their own and although well trained ani-mals and you are watched closely by instruc-tors and chaperones my horse Ace seemed to

think it was cool to canter what seemed like hours right along the dusty preci-pice to this ravine. It was scary as hell.

If I looked to my left I was looking down this vast ravine with brush and huge boulders as the only thing that could break my fall if this horse sud-denly railed and threw me off. It was not a far-fetched notion. So I preferred to look to my right, as the famed Holly-wood sign loomed right just above my head. And there was George Wayne doing his best John Wayne in True Grit. And dressed for the part too in his vintage cowboy hat and the fabulous pearl button Western style Wild West black shirt that my friend Tom Ford gave GW as a gift from his very, very first mens collection for Gucci.

And I will be in touch.

  • The Week of Excess at Art Basel MiamiBy Hillary Latos

n its 13th year, Art Basel Miami its not just about the art anymore. When jet-

setters, celebrities, billionaires, art collectors and artists congregate in a city for a week where billions of dollars exchange hands, the sponsors ensue with a dizzying array of lavish parties, openings, and fetes- each one more lavish than the next competing for at-tendance by the A-listers.

At the epicenter of the Miami art week is Art Basel Miami Beach held at the Convention Center drawing 267 of the most prestigious galleries from around the world which was attended by over 73,000 visitors making it the leading art show in America. To navi-gate through the expansive fair, new sectors were featured including the art historical Survey area with 13 galleries; Nova which was limited to works made in the last 3 years; Positions featured 16 solo shows of emerg-

ing international artists, and the Edition sec-tor showcasing prints and works in multiple editions. One of the highlights of the show was Galerie Gmurzynskas exhibition project, A Kid Could Do That, which was a collabo-ration between Baz Luhrmann, Catherine Martin and Nellee Hooper. This provocative conceptualization fea-tured key 20th century masterworks from influential artists including Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso, Robert Indiana, Cy Twombly, and Francis Bacon.

This year more art fairs than ever were held during Miami Art week. Smaller galleries and lesser known artists were able to display their works at satellite fairs such as Scope, ArtMiami, Aqua, NADA, Pulse, SE-LECT, Spectrum, UNTITLED, Red Dot, amongst others which were dotted

around Miami Beach and the Wynwood district. Not to men-tion the numerous outdoor art dis-plays including the Laurence Gartel art car on swanky Fisher Island and the Moroso installation project at the Botanic Gardens. While it was nearly impossible to hit them all in a week, there were plenty of op-portunities to experience a cultural overdose.

By night the Miami Art week turned into a playground for the rich and famous with some art dabbled in for good measure. The Bass Museums opening for One Way: Peter Marino

kicked off the weeks festivities. As the re-nowned architect for the Louis Vuitton flag-ship in NYC, naturally they were the spon-sor along with Chanel and Dior where every room had a different theme that intertwined the worlds of fashion, art and design.

An event that merges art and philanthropy is the 5th Annual Bombay Sapphire artisan series which is a collaboration with Russell and Danny Simmons RUSH Philanthropic Arts Foundation that is a nationwide compe-tition for the next big artist. The 12 finalists celebrated with a bevy of celebrities, artists, and influencers at a cocktail soiree at the Soho Beach House. Other parties drawing A listers were the Rimowa store opening in the Wynwood district as well as the VH1 and Scope opening party at Mansion.

By Sunday the Miami art fair bid adieu until next year, and if past is a prelude to the fu-ture, it will be more grandiose than ever.

he New Year is upon us and whilst some financial trends have been bro-

ken others remain in place. Lets talk this month though about long term investment trends. I personally do not believe the busi-ness cycle has changed fundamentally. We could be due for a mild recession but due to the nature of our overall economic recovery I dont think the slowdown will be dramatic. A down year is possible. December is tradi-tionally a strong month and this December, though volatile does not appear to be a very strong one an ominous prelude to the New Year. Treasury Yields have been going down for what seems like forever and I do not see that trend changing. Deflationary trends are everywhere. Oil pric-es are bringing many nations to their eco-nomic knees from South of the US Border to Russia. The relatively high yields of the USA Treasury note and the safe haven that the USA provides will underpin another year of strong buying of our governments debt. This is where I see opportunity. The huge declines

in energy prices will hurt and continue to hurt energy companies. I dont see the full effect of these declines in energy prices reflected in the market. There has been huge borrowing in the energy sector for acquisitions and infra-structure. I think there will be a big opportu-nity to buy stocks and high yielding bonds in 2015. If a route is on expect a huge sell off in all high yielding debt as hedge fund manag-ers are forced to liquidate. Though I do continue to invest personally in stock I am a wimpy investor by Gordon Geckos standards and I prefer bonds. There are a lot of high yielding bonds right now in the energy sector. An investment in a cor-porate bond is a bet that the company will not go out of business. My advice is to wait it out if lower energy prices persist there just may be a panic in energy bonds and the high yield sector overall. Just the thing for a patient investor looking for juicy yields to sink their teeth into.

Happy New Year and happy hunting!

inter is upon us, and along with it often comes cold toes and feet.

Award-winning podiatrist Dr. Suzanne Levine offers tips on ways to keep your feet warm feet during the cold winter months. 1. Moisturization and HydrationKeeping ones feet well moisturized is key to warm feet, because in winter months, skin tends to get dry and can crack. Cracks in skin let the cold in so moisturizing in the winter is especially important. When moisturizing your feet, start at your toes and move towards the heel. Always massage towards the heart to increases circulation, which will in turn help keep you warm. General hydration is also very important so be certain to drink plenty of water.

    2. Exercise Your FeetExercise helps improve circulation and therefore warms up ones feet. Dr. Levine suggests feet exercises including a gas pedal pumping simulation exercise, or writing the alphabet with your toes, which can be done wearing shoes or boots. At

home, try massaging the soles of the feet with a tennis ball.

    3. Cut Down on Caffeine, Cigarettes or Anything that Restricts Blood FlowCaffeine and cigarettes are known to narrow the blood vessels and constrict blood flow

throughout the body, especially the feet. After smoking one cigarette, the blood flow to the feet can be reduced significantly. Some good news: a cocktail or glass of wine actually relaxes blood vessels and can increase circulation.

    4. Wear Two Pairs of SocksIn addition to providing extra warmth to your feet, wearing two pairs of socks provides extra cushion that provides comfort and can help with circulation.

    5. Calm Your NervesWhen we think of cold feet it relates to nervous jitters. Nerves can be one of the key problems to cold feet. Meditation is a great way to lower stress levels and relax muscles and nerve endings.

  • The shift from open to laparoscopic surgery was slower to begin in pediatrics than in adult surgery, in large part because the first laparoscopic instruments were developed for adults, and child-sized devices were simply not

  • other artists have used it to portray a beauti-ful face. 1:1.618 is the golden ratio. From it, you can derive a triangle as the base for several overlapping geometrical shapes. A blueprint of this rule was created by re-tired Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon Dr. Stephen Marquardt, and came to be known as Mar-quardts mask or the Golden Mask.

These shapes and ratios seem to repeat themselves over and over again in what is universally considered a beautiful face.

Marquardts golden mask shows clear ratios throughout the beautiful face. For example, the mouth is 1.618 time wider than the base of the nose; the nose base is 1.6 times wider than the tip of the nose; The triangle formed by a beautiful persons nose and lips is a per-fect acute triangle...and so on... Even the ratio of a beautiful lower to upper lip follows this golden ratio by 1:1.680. This is espe-cially important when considering a natural and beautiful appearance by using fillers or fat grafting for lip augmentation. In the hands of a capable plastic surgeon with a good sense of aesthetics this can result in the perfect pout.

Its important to note that the instrument used to measure this ratio in a plastic surgeons of-fice is called a Golden Mean Gauge, and every good cosmetic doctor will have one and should use one on you.
