WHY BAMBOOSUSTAINABILITY; OUR DUTY

Sustainability is becoming more important in our society and the consequences are also noticeable in the construction industry. Sustainable construction is stimulated.

We at REINÆRDT Deuren feel that is our duty to consider the consequences for the future generations. For years we have been using FSC/PEFC certified wood.

But we are now taking the next step: we introduce bamboo (the giant bamboo species ‘Moso’, Phyllostachus Pubescens from China) as a replacement of tropical hardwood.

Following are a few important aspects which make bamboo even more sustainable than certi-fied tropical hardwood.

First of all it is a grass species which grows at a much faster pace that wood and can therefore guarantee more material at the same time.

The harvesting and growth rates are the most important environmental aspects. The ‘mother stem’ grows new stems each year; replanting is therefore unnecessary. Each year, the 5 year old stems in the plantation can be harvested, without decreasing the size of the forest. The quality of the bamboo forest even increases as a result of regular harvesting and removal of smaller stems. This method allows an even larger growth of new shoots and increases the quality in the following year.

The Phyllostachys Pubescens grows in extensive forests but also in managed plantations. On these plantations, 30% of the bamboo stems can be harvested annually without reducing the size of that forest.

The plantation of bamboo prevents soil erosion (the extensive root system ensures a stable ground) and it prevents dryness by water retention. Due to the rapid growth, bamboo absorbs more CO2 (and produces oxygen) which has a positive effect on global warming.

Official LCA research at the Delft University of Technology following the ISO 14040 and 14044 standard, commissioned by our bamboo supplier MOSO International, concludes that all assessed products are CO2 neutral or better over the full life cycle.

Bamboo also offers several advantages in processing and use. Based on chemical and mechanical properties (hardness, stability) bamboo looks very similar to tropical hardwood from the best quality. Bamboo gets processed well and offers a very special look that many architects appreciated.

In addition, the application of bamboo offers additional benefits for the most important sustainable building systems BREEAM and LEED.

Experience, fire resistance testing and pressure testing have given us the knowledge on how bamboo behaves in our doors. We have been able to determine that the proces-sing of bamboo is equivalent to hardwoord. We also passed the fire resistance tests with bamboo.

Meanwhile we also have experience in practice. One of the most controversial projects are the Isala Clinics in Zwolle; 5 000 doors with bamboo.

And even the first European Hyatt Place Hotel in Hoofddorp features 330 spacious rooms with our bamboo doors. We also passed the fire resistance tests with bamboo.
