    RESPONSE PROCEDURES

    Emergency Colo/r Co6es

:mergency colour codes are used in hospitals and other health care centres worldwide to

denote to staff various kinds of emergency situations. The use of codes is intended toconvey essential information -uickly and with minimal misunderstanding to appropriatepersonnel. They enable a concise means of ensuring all personnel receive a commonmessageF signaling the need for an urgent response without unnecessarily alerting or alarmingpatients, residents or visitors. In !5$$, the ?2 6inistry of 8ealth A6o8B issued a policy that standardi9es these colour codes inacute care facilities across ?ritish 2olumbia. The intent of this policy is to ensure consistency incolour codes used across the province. This need for standardi9ed codes is underscored by themobility of the health care workforce.esidential care facilities are not re-uired to develop codes that conform to this

standardi9ation. 8owever, it is strongly encouraged that sites align any codes they develop orhave developed to the policy issued by the 6o8. oing so will help speed up response andallow for a broader understanding by health care workers visiting from other facilities.

    "eneral Response Proce6/res

This section provides general planning considerations and response procedures with regards toemergency colour codes as outlined in the 6o8 policy. ?elow is a list of the templates providedin the following pages. These templates correspond to the most common ha9ards that sitesshould develop codes and procedures for. Templates will need to be customi9ed for yourfacilities. EoteD &ites are not re-uired to adopt and develop all the codes listed below and in the6o8 policy. &ites should only develop codes that are relevant to them.
