MOTHER and son team Adrianand Kareena Ballard know realestate, so much so that the pairhas recently celebrated 10 yearsworking together at Jones Bal-lard Property Group in Como.

TENANTS with furry friends havebeen slapped with a $160 increasein the pet bond.

The maximum pet bond thatlandlords are able to charge ten-ants increased from $100 to $260from 1 June.

According to the Commission-er for Consumer Protection,AnneDriscoll, this new charge reflectsthe present-day costs associatedwith fumigation after a tenant witha dog or cat has vacated a rentalproperty.

“The cost of fumigation hasincreased over the years and it isappropriate that the pet bond alsoincrease to adequately cover thisextra cost,’’ she said.

“It’s important to note that thepet bond is in addition to the usualsecurity bond and can bereturned if the fumigation is notnecessary.”

Ms Driscoll said the increase inthe pet bond may make it easierfor pet owners to find rentalaccommodation, as landlords willbe more willing to accept theirapplications knowing the cost offumigation will be adequately metat the end of the tenancy.

The decision to increase the petbond was part of a detailed reviewof tenancy laws in WA and fol-lowed an extensive consultationand review period, which involvedpublic meetings, focus groups andindividual meetings.
