From the President’s Desk—Dave Borchardt

Our first ever Father’s—Men’s Day was a huge success with the ladies cooking and serving the guys. We started out with great Bloody Mary's (thank you Arlene) then on to Orange Juice, a cin-namon roll, egg bake and biscuits with gravy. It was a great meal that was very much enjoyed. Thanks again to Karen Kroschel for coming up with the idea of a special event for Mother’s Day and Father's Day and a big Thank You to all the ladies who helped cook and serve. We had a 50-50 drawing as well as some table prizes and a couple of door prizes. What a special day it was! The hot dog day on June 12th was very well attended. We had 63 people sign up and probably around 70 or so show up and we had plenty of hot dogs to go around. Thank you Wayne Miller for enduring the heat to cook the hot dogs and onions! Our Strawberry Fest with Ice Cream was another huge success and I think we had around 70 people attend. Everything tasted so good! Thank you Connie for cutting and preparing the strawberries and for the delicious whipped cream. Thank you to everyone who helps with our events. We simply couldn’t do it without you!

EGG BAKE RECIPE (was used for the Father’s Day Brunch) Spray pan and spread out 1 package frozen O’Brien hash brown potatoes. Beat together: 9 eggs 1 cup milk 1/2 tsp salt dash of pepper Pour over potatoes, spread 2 cups diced ham and 2 cups grated cheese over all. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight. Next day bake at 375 for one hour covered, then uncover and bake 5 minutes more.

One of our most attended events since we started it has been the Hot Dog Day. Everyone really seems to enjoy the hot dog with all the fixings. This is a free event for our residents and if you bring a guest it is only $3.00 per person for two hot dogs & chips. Quite the bargain. Our hot dogs are professionally cooked by Wayne Miller and this last event on June 12th Wayne even grilled up some onions at the same time he was cooking the hot dogs. Talk about multi-tasking. We probably won’t have another one now until September so watch your calendars for it.

Calling All Wii Bowlers by M. Drouin

If you are looking for something to do on a Monday afternoon around 1:30pm, come to the clubhouse and join us in an afternoon of bowling with our neighbors. We have a group of around 8 - 10 bowlers and it’s a lot of fun. We cheer each other on, it beats sitting around in the house, and its air conditioned. A trophy is given to the high one game score. Come meet some people you haven't met before and give it a try. For further information, call Midge Drouin or Don Chil-ders.

Strawberry and Ice Cream Festival by Connie Riter

On Friday, June 21

st, the first day of summer, we

held our yearly strawberry festival with over 70 people participating. Over 20 quarts of strawber-ries were prepared, 3 quarts of real whipped cream mixed, 72 individual pound cakes pur-chased, as well as several gallons of ice cream and all the toppings. We held this event at 5pm and by 4:30pm the

clubhouse was almost full. It was very difficult to

wait until 5 to begin serving, but we did! In previ-

ous years we sometimes were all done by the

time we were supposed to start. There was no

whipped cream left, only a smattering of straw-

berries, and just a little ice cream. Everyone seemed to have a good time and a few people even

managed to find room for seconds.

T'ai Chi classes by M. Drouin

Why do chair yoga, light weights, and T'ai Chi? Well, for starters, do you have stress in your life, depression, and anxiety? For some of you newbies out there, you might want to change your life to loosen, expand, and open your grip on life. Take T'ai Chi for instance- it will teach you to breathe deeply and properly, let your body’s rigid muscles let go, and relax your mind and heart to begin to do well. Now, let me explain our light weight and Yoga class....everything is done sitting in a chair. On Mondays, we work on upper body and on Thursdays lower body. It's not an intense workout. Doc-tors recommend doing these type of exercises to help with balance, mind, and wellness. You’re welcome to come and sit and watch, take notes, or just enjoy listening to the music. Give it a try...you might like it. Any questions, call Midge Drouin at 602-459-9039 or on my cell, 480-278-0474. Classes will start up again in August. Times are always from 9am until approximately 10 am.

DESERT HARBOR FATHERS’ DAY—MENS’ DAY JUNE 16, 2019

Father Day Brunch by Karen Kroschel

On Father's Day some of the resident ladies put together a wonderful brunch for the men who attended. They treated them royally, for sure. Their meal began with coffee, orange juice and even Bloody Marys for those who wanted them. And those were fancy ones at that. Almost a meal in a glass, complete with veggies, olives, beef sticks and shrimp. They were a big hit! Each place setting included gold flatware and a cloth bandana napkin, and a bowl with a cinna-mon roll (which they all dove into right away.) When the meal was served the men were each presented with a large plate of a delicious egg bake filled with ham, potatoes and eggs. They also received biscuits with some delicious sausage gravy on the side. All the men enjoyed just sitting and visiting with those at their table. Before they left they got chances to win the 50/50 drawing. Then we drew for an ACE Hardware as well as Home Depot gift cards. Plus there were two gift bag prizes. Once that was done they checked their tables for a secret sticker to win the gift bag at each table. From the looks of their plates, no one went home hungry and they enjoyed it all.

RESIDENT SHOWCASE DON CHILDERS Lot #201 by Connie Riter

A Man Who is Everyone’s Friend Don and Judy moved into Desert Harbor only 5 years ago, but those of us who know them feel like they have been here forever. Don grew up here in Phoenix where he met Judy. But at her insistence they moved back to her state, Minnesota. Don has 2 sons, Don, Jr. who lives in Richmond, Virginia and Mike who lives in Goodyear, AZ. Don spent 15 years working as a prison guard at a correctional facility on a work farm. Before that he worked for 20 years with his father running their own service station in Phoenix. These jobs helped him to learn to do many things. Judy worked for 3M for many years. She found their house in Desert Harbor on line, and they moved here in 2014. Don is willing to help anyone who has a need. They were only here for 2 days when he resurfaced the shuf-fleboard scoreboard. He helped set up the new TV in the Clubhouse, too. When Jerry and Judith Dilley moved into the house across the street, and began his class in wood carving, Don was one of the first to join! He has made unique bingo boards which he gives away. He carves chains out of one piece of wood. He has carved little toys from a solid piece of wood also, and many beautiful bowls, some inlaid with crushed tur-quoise. He belongs to the Rock and Gem Club and has made and fixed many unusual clocks. Much of what he has made he has learned to do from books. And he doesn’t want to sell anything. He prefers to give his creations away. Yet he still has time to do many park activities. He is the one who organized the Ping Pong games. He also plays bingo and poker at every opportunity. Mexican Train is another of his hobbies. He plays darts and Wee bowling. He also has organized a golf cart challenge, and has many stories he can tell of the time he worked in the correctional facility. Don and Judy have 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Don is willing to help anyone he sees needs help in the Park, sometimes without even being asked. Twice he came to our house after early Saturday morning coffee and asked if he could “borrow” our golf cart. He brought it back in the afternoon, all cleaned up and polished. (Judy said she saw him using a toothpick to get out some of the caked on dirt.) Thanks, Don. When I asked him if he missed Minnesota, he said, “I miss the FISHING!”

What a nice day today. 34 of our Desert Harbor residents took the light rail in to downtown Phoe-nix to have lunch together at the Old Spaghetti Factory. We had the 1 hour plus ride getting there then a delicious lunch. Albeit we didn't get to choose from the full menu but the choices were very adequate. Our choices were Spaghetti and meatballs, Spaghetti marinara, or Fettuccini Alfredo. It came with baked bread loaves, salad and even spumoni ice cream for the price. I know not everyone enjoyed the train but it was a great experience for all. Would do it again sometime. And just think, we got to see a real spaghetti tree. I really think we can make one of those next time we hold a Spaghetti dinner in the clubhouse. Easy peasy.
