SPORTS DAY SUCCESS Last Friday we convened sports day on the school grounds. It was the first time in the history of either Port Pirie High School or JPSS that the event has been staged on our own arena. Cara Fiebig, the HPE staff and Sport & Recreation Committee deserve widespread acknowledgement. Every year their efforts to prepare and conduct sports day are significant but in a new venue planning the layout, line marking, jumping pits, volunteer locations etc. create extra workload. It was an excellent team effort, the ovals looked great, events flowed smoothly and the day ran perfectly to schedule.
What I value most about sports day is the opportunity it provides students to display the qualities necessary for success in their futures and contribute to a better society. Respect was once again very evident. I saw it in the way young people supported each other, barracked for those who are striving to do their best, represented their house team with pride but at the same time were mates who competed for rival teams. One image that stays in my mind is of a young guy struggling to complete the 800m and students from all house teams getting alongside him, offering encouragement and completing the last 200m alongside him. It was ‘gold’ and is inherent in the way sports day operates.
There were many other visions of excellence in performance, massive improvement by those who have trained and set themselves to do well and others who may not be athletically inclined but display the confidence and determination to get involved, support their team and show the grit and resilience needed to do their best.
Some people are critical of today’s youth and certainly with more than 600 adolescents here day to day we encounter similar issues as are evident in the broader community. On sports day we are reminded of the best that our youth bring. It is genuinely inspiring to watch them striving to do their best, being leaders and responsible citizens and above all having fun engaging in a range of healthy, active pursuits. Already I look forward to next year!

Imagination
Ten students including the school captains and vice captains
attended 'Imagination' formerly known as 'Young Leaders Day' at
the Adelaide Convention Centre on March 21 2017. Students
listened to a variety of prominent speakers including journalist
and Channel 7 presenter Melissa Doyle, former Adelaide Crows
defender Brent Reilly, skateboarding entrepreneur Poppy Starr
as well as artist Peter Drew. These presenters inspired our
students through the stories they told and the adversity they had
overcome to achieve their dreams. Students took particular
interest in Melissa Doyle's presentation where she explained the
persistence she showed after continually being rejected for jobs
when she first finished her degree but was in the ‘right place at
the right time’ to score her first journalism role. Another crowd
favourite was Brent Reilly's story, a 200 game player for the
Adelaide Crows, Brent was forced into retirement after a serious
head injury sustained at training. He discussed having to change
his mindset from a fixed mindset to having a growth mindset to
attain his goal of playing football professionally at the highest
level. Sixteen year old Poppy Starr discussed her love of skate
boarding and entrepreneur skills she had developed to
successfully fund her skateboarding dreams. As her parents
couldn’t financially support her to travel overseas to
competitions, she took things into her own hands and began
selling art and jewellery at local markets which funded her first
overseas competition in the USA. With skateboarding becoming
an Olympic sport in 2020, Poppy explained her desires and
dreams to compete at this elite level. Students also participated
in games and activities to get them thinking about their
leadership style and what they value in their lives. Although it
was an early departure the students maintained a high level of
interest throughout the day stating it was one of the most
inspiring excursions they'd been on, one was even star struck
and speechless when she bumped into Melissa Doyle!
Imagination was a unique opportunity to expose our students to
real-life stories of leaders in a variety of fields and for them to
gain insight into how they can make a difference in the world.

Year 12 Food and Hospitality
Students in Year 12
Food and
Hospitality recently
expanded their
horizons with an
excursion to Mr
Mick Kitchen in the
Clare Valley. Students toured the kitchen facilities, asked
questions of the head chef and the management team to assist
with researching their current assignment. The research task
they are completing focuses on the current trend of tapas style
food in the food and
hospitality industry.
Students then enjoyed
a tapas style feast with
dishes such as beetroot
and blue cheese
arancini balls with basil
pesto, patatas (fried
potatoes) with herb
salt and creamy aioli, duo of dips with za’atar dusted pita bread,
salt and pepper squid with grapefruit, guava, chilli & coriander
sauce, chicken and pork san choy bau meatballs with ginger and
soy sauce, and chicken drumettes marinated in smokey BBQ &
srirarcha with aioli.
Vegetarian options such
as Clare Valley haloumi
with mint, grapes and
pomegranate vinaigrette,
creamy polenta chips with
chargrilled capsicum
pesto and a carrot, apricot
and cumin tart with lemon ricotta whip were provided to
students with alternative dietary choices. The afternoon was
finished with churros; Spanish donuts in cinnamon sugar with Mr
Mick infused chocolate sauce. Students took photos of the
garnishing and presentation in order to draw inspiration for their
upcoming practical where they will serve a tapas style dish to
paying guests. Overall it was a fabulous day and showcased how
tapas dining can be a social experience that celebrates the union
between food, drink and friends. Students explored a number of
small dishes, some sampling new ingredients in the process,
discussing taste, texture and presentation with their classmates.

JPSS Athletics Carnival
On Friday March 24, John
Pirie Secondary School
held its annual Sports Day.
This year was the first
time the event had been
held at the school as in
previous years it had been
run at Memorial Oval.
The day got off to a cracking start with the 100m hurdle events.
The athleticism the athletes showed was impressive with many
races coming right down to the line. Throughout the morning the
leader board was hotly contested with Lewis getting off to a
flying start. However it wasn’t long before eventual winners
Hewett started hitting the scoreboard with far superior
participation numbers compared to Lewis, Neilson and Ross. It
just goes to show the greater the team spirit, the greater the

participation numbers and the greater number of points gained
for your house!
Some fierce individual
battles took place
throughout the day in
all age groups. The
Open Boys
competition is always
close with Tyson
Amey, Kirby Gadaleta,
Ayden Jorgenson and
O’Reilly Gray all performing well across multiple events. In the
Open Girls, surprise packet Jessica Phipps (Hewett) did battle
with Hewett team mates Brittney Taylor and Abbie Heyes. In a
huge individual effort Kurtlee Buzzacott scored a whopping 92
points for his team, the highest of all individual trophy winners –
not bad for someone in his first year at JPSS!
By far the best sight of
the day was seeing
students getting behind
each other in a number
of ways. Teamwork was
clearly at the forefront
of everyone’s mind
especially Hannah
Simpson and Brenton Binnell’s (both from Neilson) who ran
alongside 800m event participant Reegan Pens to get him
through one of the toughest races in the hottest part of the day.
Alex Giles efforts throughout the day also did not go unnoticed,
entering many events for Ross when their event numbers were
lacking. His determination and persistence are qualities that he
should be highly commended for. Other commendations for
students who displayed the school qualities of respect,
responsibility, confidence and persistence were Liam Dreaver
and Josh Cheek for rallying around their team mates and having
a go however the overall school qualities shield was awarded to
Leah Funke (Neilson) and Dylan McGregor (Ross) for their
outstanding contribution to their team and team mates
throughout the day.
At the end of the day
Hewett were winners
on 2038.5 points,
surpassing their total
of 2028 points from
the previous year (a
new record). Hewett
had the highest
number of participants, and were blessed with great house
captains and an amazing house coordinator, Mrs Nyasha Tulloch
who did a great job filling events on the day. I would just like to
say a huge thank you to the parents who attended the day for
the first time at JPSS – the atmosphere that was created by your
presence was brilliant. To Jayne James and the Metro Canteen
staff for feeding us all! To the staff of JPSS particularly Mr
Graham Hoile and Mr Chris Flavel, the day would not have been
able to go ahead without your time and effort. To St Johns
Ambulance, thank you for keeping us all safe and well
throughout a rather warm day. And finally to the students of
JPSS who continue to inspire us, your behaviour and attitude on
the day was fantastic. Thank you everyone for making the first
Sports Day at JPSS one to remember.
