The growth has been extreme and the Arts teaching staff deserve strong acknowledgement as do students who actively engage and make the most of the opportunities they have. In 2017 we had a record number of entries in the Art Prize and judges laboured over their decisions. Chloe’s Fullers three tier glass piece is amazing and she was awarded the 2017 Art Prize. The item is on display in the school foyer, it is well worth viewing. The music items went to another level this year. There was heavy metal, rock, country and some blues tunes – a great mix performed by wonderfully talented musicians. The Music Excellence Program has helped develop performance capacity with more taking the chance to develop their creative talents. The interest in drama at our school has exploded and we’re seeing some genuinely strong performances emerge. This year’s drama production “The Hope and Heartache Diner” was a complex work, brilliantly performed which thoroughly entertained the attentive audience. Throughout the Food & Hospitality team provided a delicious range of savoury and sweet morsels to ensure no-one went hungry. It was a wonderful evening, with a large crowd demonstrating the strong support from students, staff, parents and the community. The Festival of the Arts is a JPSS icon that embodies our school motto Striving for Excellence. More and more we see students pushing the boundaries of achievement, something that is very evident in SACE achievement, sporting success, STEM endeavours and never more visible that in the performance of Arts students. Term 3 has been highly successful. Many students have excelled in schooling achievements and it’s also wonderful to celebrate their success in activities outside of formal education programs. Once again state champions, state selection, national representation has featured; something I know parents are very proud of and so are we. Reports will be home soon, the $2.85M STEM development starts next week, some students head to Rajastan (India) on a volunteer leadership program, Year 8/9 soccer squad compete in the state finals and Year 12’s complete the final stage of their education. We all wish them well, enjoy the break when it arrives! Year 8/9 Girls Indoor Soccer

After our recent success in Jamestown, the girls progressed to

the next round for Year 8/9 Indoor Soccer in Adelaide on

Thursday 14 September. JPSS were the only country school team

participating in the next round and we would play against some

of the large metropolitan schools. The girls were brilliant on the

day and created history for JPSS, they became the first JPSS sport

team to make the finals of a school knockout competition! All

the best for the finals girls on Thursday 28 September in

Adelaide!

Results from 8/9 Girls Indoor Soccer:

JPSS 4-1 Parafield Gardens High School

JPSS 3-2 Pinnacle College

JPSS 3-4 Roma Mitchell Secondary College

JPSS 1-0 Thomas Moore College

JPSS 1-1 Gleeson College

Woolworths Earn & Learn

As you know, our school has been participating in Woolworths

Earn & Learn. The program has now finished for this year, so a

big thanks to everyone who supported our school. We're now at

the important stage of the program where the Sticker Sheets are

collected and lodged as our Earn & Learn claim. We will then be

able to get new educational equipment for our school. The more

we collect, the more we can redeem. So this week, please send

in your Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheets and any loose

Earn & Learn stickers you may have. Remember to check your

handbag, the car glove box or they may be stuck on the fridge.

Every little bit helps. Thanks again for all your support!

Opening of the Mural

On Monday 11 September, the Flips Centre Mural was officially

opened. There was a small gathering around the Flips area,

including Mr Nottage, Ms

Simpson, Ms Pendry, Ms Hoile,

Ms Dennis, Ms Pepe, Ms

Adams, Ms Caputo, Ms Welke

and the students from the

class.

This mural began as a vision of

Ms Emma Pendry (the FLIPS Centre Coordinator) wanting to

create an inviting entrance which reflected inclusion, connection

and support. Ms Pendry also wanted something that represented

the strong values that are nurtured at the Flips Centre.

It was with this in mind that, myself and the Stage 2 Arts in the

Community class began developing ideas for the mural. Thinking

about the words, inclusion, connection and support, students

began researching and sketching ideas. As a group we picked

elements from each idea and combined them into a rough idea

of what we were after. It was to be two hands shaking, of

different skin tones. The hands would include the school values

and indigenous elements. This met the requirements of

inclusion, connection and support, and met the brief.

The students then had to measure the area and obtain a quote

for the surface of the mural. We decided on marine ply for its

durability and marine gloss to protect the finished piece.

Students began drawing up the image and putting first coats of

colour on. After a few weeks tone and shade was added to give

depth to the image. Students prepared the wall where it was to

be erected. Problems soon arose during this process and the

paint was bubbling and reacting to the surface. We decided to

sand the area back and prime, but this too bubbled. So in

desperation we obtained a sheet of thin ply from Tech Studies

and painted this blue and stuck this up under the mural. This was

later changed to a grey colour. It was then decided that a frame

around the mural would enhance the look of it. We got some

edging from Tech and made a frame for the mural. This really

showed the John Pirie value of persistence!

After several weeks of hard work we have finally completed an

inviting entrance for the Flips centre and with the amount of

marine gloss we applied, it should be there for a long time!

The students who worked on this mural are Scott Wells, Crystal

Roberts, Dominic Panuccio-Richardson, Wesley Kemble and

Krystal Button. There was also assistance from Charmaine

Brusnahan and Kye McBride. These students deserve a big pat on

the back.

Well done guys.

Term 3 reports Years 8 - 11

Staff are currently preparing Term 3 reports to go home to

families. The third report for years 8 – 10 is based on Australian

Curriculum standards and

reflects student

achievement demonstrated

against the standard, taking

into account what has been

taught to this point in the

year. Stage 1 (Year 11)

reports reflect student

achievement at the mid-point of second semester reflecting

student progress in relation to the SACE performance standards

associated with each of these subjects.

Reports will be sent home with students in the last week of term.

Families who wish to discuss any aspect of the report are able to

book a parent teacher interview for week one of Term 4.

Meeting bookings are managed through an online booking site.

Instructions for booking are included in the report envelope. If

there are any families who are unable to access this site bookings

can be arranged through student services at school. If either the

date or time are not suitable families are encouraged to contact

the school to make alternative arrangements.

Government House Visit

Each year our school captains are

invited to Government House in

Adelaide to attend the Governor’s

Secondary School Student

Representatives Reception. This

year Kristy and O’Reilly travelled

to Adelaide for the event and

attended government house along

with student representatives form

many other South Australian

schools. After passing through

security they were able to meet

the governor and his wife. They were excited to see students

from John Pirie and expressed fond memories of attending our

prize presentation assembly from 2015. Time was then allowed

for students to explore the house and have photos with the

governor before all too quickly the hour was up and it was time

to return home. This was a unique experience as very few get the

opportunity to access this iconic South Australian residence and

O’Reilly and Kristy appreciated this chance to get up close and

personal with our Governor in his home.
