  • Slide 2
  • Draw me a mega quick sketch of what you think the lungs look like!
  • Slide 3
  • Did any of you draw them looking like this?
  • Slide 4
  • Learning Objectives Recall the different structures in the lungs Describe the pathway that oxygen takes through our body Explain how the lungs are suited to their function by describing the role of alveoli
  • Slide 5
  • Bronchioles Bronchus Trachea Lung Diaphragm Alveoli (air sacs) The respiratory system LO: Describe how the lungs help us to breathe
  • Slide 6
  • The alveoli are bunches of tiny air sacks inside the lungs. When you breathe in, they fill with air. The alveoli LO: Describe how the lungs help us to breathe
  • Slide 7
  • Make a model lung on your table! Using the following items: Large straw- Trachea Smaller straws- Bronchus Raisins/little balls of paper- Alveoli Cocktail sticks- Bronchioles First table to make the most accurate lung structure! LO: Describe how the lungs help us to breathe
  • Slide 8
  • It could look like this.....?
  • Slide 9
  • PROGRESS CHECK Put these in the correct order... Mouth Alveoli Bronchus Trachea Bronchioles On your mini-whiteboards! LO: Describe how the lungs help us to breathe

  • Modelling gas exchange Oxygen O 2 is picked up by red blood cells. This is called oxygenated blood Oxygenated blood is pumped around the body to the cells in our tissues The cells of the tissues use the O 2. blood is now said to be deoxygenated The cells of the tissue produce waste carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) The carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) is removed from the blood in the lungs LO: Describe how the lungs help us to breathe

  • Recall the different structures in the lungs Describe the pathway that oxygen takes through our body Explain how the lungs are suited to their function by describing the role of alveoli Draw and label a picture of the lungs Make a flow diagram to show the path oxygen takes through our body! Start: Oxygen is breathed in through our mouth Keywords: carbon dioxide, oxygen and oxygenated, deoxygenated, diffuse, carry, tissues, lungs, red blood cells. Think of ONE idea, run it past me then use the help sheet at the front to come up with more

  • Extension: The alveoli are adapted to make gas exchange in lungs happen easily and efficiently. Features of the alveoli that allow gas exchange They have moist, thin walls (just one cell thick) They give the lungs a really big surface area They have a lot of tiny blood vessels called capillaries. • Switch work with your partner: What keywords have they included in their description: Give them a level Say ONE good thing theyve done Say ONE thing they good do to improve LO: Describe how the lungs help us to breathe

  • WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT TODAY? Choose one of the following... TWEET ME - What was the most important thing you learnt today? Write it in 140 characters in your book! Call my bluff! Write TWO true statements and one false. Can your partner guess the false statement and explain why? Art Smart Draw me the most important thing youve learnt today LO: Describe how the lungs help us to breathe
