Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) and Barista Courses Once formal classes finished for Year 12's we were able to offer two different courses through IIFP for interested students to help with their future employment prospects. The first one completed on Melbourne Cup Day was a half day course (for Year 12's only) in the responsible service of alcohol (RSA). In this course students looked at the legal and ethical responsibilities involved in the service of alcohol; whilst also practicing (with coloured water) pouring the amounts that equate to one glass, shot etc. Following this, on the first Friday in December we had a full day of Barista training, again in the beautifully appointed St Pauls Food and Technology Centre. The students were taught by old scholar Oonagh Antonello, who is now a qualified chef and combines this work with teaching (funnily enough Oonagh was one of the chefs at the Convention Centre working on the school's graduation dinner the following evening.) Both groups of students were actively interested and quick to learn their craft; I was very proud of the way in which all students conducted themselves and feel very confident about their ability to utilise their newfound skills to their advantage into the future. Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) and Barista Courses

Once formal classes finished for Year 12's we were able to offer two different courses through IIFP for interested students to help with their future employment prospects.

A Serendipity Career Journey – Benjamin Goodyear

For many teachers at Sacred Heart it is common place to keep in touch with old scholars and happily share in the highs of their success beyond the classroom. Recently Simon Honner heard from old Scholar, Benjamin Goodyear, who has generously agreed to share his story beyond the SHC gates. Ben's story is a really good example of someone following their passions and interests and building on collective experiences to strive for more.

I took a Bachelor of Science majoring in Theoretical Physics at Adelaide University and finished that in the year 2000. Life then took a few interesting turns as I became heavily involved in DJ-ing, playing in bands, amateur acting, which paved the way for a hedonistic twenties…

The acting was, in fact, as part of the Heartspace Theatre Company; a collection of Sacred Heart College old scholars (and a few others) under the leadership of former SHC drama teacher, Christopher Havey. The group had well over a decade of success, with performances dating back to King Lear in the Adelaide Fringe in 2002, as well as many well-received “Nights in the Parlour” showcasing various short plays to intimate audiences in a gorgeous setting.

Things settled down in my mid-twenties (slightly) and I completed a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment at the ‘Securities Institute’ (now ‘Kaplan’, I think) followed by a Graduate Diploma in Property at the University of South Australia – I ended up working as a property valuer helping my father’s business grow, for a few years, of all things.

As I reached my late twenties I could sense I was not, perhaps, making the most of things. The DJ-ing and acting died down, and I took time to seriously consider what I wanted to do next…

After a long deliberation I felt compelled to do a law degree, which I began in 2009. And from the very first lecture, I have not looked back. It is definitely my life calling. I took a Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice at Flinders University (being the only University I had not yet studied at!). I was fortunate enough to be taught by a fantastic teacher called Tania Leiman. She instilled a passion for the law in me, and I followed it right through.

In 2012, I graduated from law (top of the year) with the University Medal and 16 other prizes in law. I then worked for a year as a ‘Judge’s Associate’ in the Federal Court of Australia, albeit located in Adelaide. It’s the ‘bow of a ship’ green building in the south-east corner of Victoria Square. The Judge for whom I worked, Justice Lander, is now the Independent Commissioner against Corruption.

From there, I moved to the big smoke in 2013 – Sydney, and joined the big litigation firms up there. Most recently, I was working for fantastic partner at King & Wood Mallesons… a truly brilliant mind and a down to earth top guy.

But there was one challenge left… one ‘academic Mount Everest’ yet to be climbed. There is a course at Oxford that is regarded as the toughest law masters in the world. It’s called the ‘Bachelor of Civil Law’ – oddly named, as

Page 3: Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) and Barista Courses ... · The first one completed on Melbourne Cup Day was a half day course (for Year 12's only) in the responsible service

it is a 1-year masters. It’s pretty tough to get into as they have over a thousand applicants each year, and take just under 150 from around the world. About 15 or so Aussies get in, and this year, I applied and was accepted!

So I am reading law for some 10 hours a day, but the experience is surreal. The history, the architecture, the academic prowess, and the atmosphere contained in this place is intoxicating and inspiring.

I attach a photo of the Duke Humfrey Reading Room in the Bodleian Library. The books are from the 16th and 17th

century and it’s a fantastic place to read and study. The photo is of a working library. You can read the books. But the entire Bodleian Library is a non-borrowing library, so everything is read inside… there are hundreds of desks around to accommodate the readers. And yes, they have shot some Harry Potter scenes there!

I think I’ll be back in Adelaide in mid-2017, after this course ends, and before I return to Sydney to return to work as a commercial lawyer. Just in time for my 20-year school reunion!

Work Experience for 2017

BEFORE CONSIDERING WORK EXPERIENCE PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE FOLLOWING:

It is a legal requirement that prior to commencing Work Experience students are inducted in the following areas: Work Health & Safety Act 2012, Equal Opportunity and the Children’s Protection Act 1993. Adequate time (approximately 5 hours) should be allocated to cover these topics effectively and students need to demonstrate their understanding. This induction is done by the school and is consistent with our Duty of Care to ensure that no student is placed where they may not be safe physically or psychologically.

In addition to this, the Work Experience Form must be signed by the student, workplace provider, parent/guardian (all arranged by the student) and finally the principal (arranged by the school). (The original (copies or faxes are unacceptable) Work Experience Agreement Form then becomes a legal contract which sets the school insurance cover in place and must be retained by the school).

Page 4: Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) and Barista Courses ... · The first one completed on Melbourne Cup Day was a half day course (for Year 12's only) in the responsible service

The school must also provide a contact person who is responsible for each student for the duration of their placement.

Work Experience is a very valuable opportunity for most students however, it does take time to ensure that the above expectations are met. We are happy to accommodate students in the times allocated. Please do not cause yourself or the College embarrassment by making other arrangements and then asking for exceptions to be made.

Students who wish to do Work Experience during 2017 are advised that the dates are:

10th - 14th July Deadline for paperwork 5th June

24th - 28th July (Yr 10’s and 11’s) Deadline for paperwork 5th June
