What is sanctification?

• Useful as dictionaries are, they need to betested against Scripture

• To give one example:

Society

What is sanctification….….according to the dictionaries?

“Sanctification is the making truly and perfectlyholy what was before defiled and sinful.

It is a progressive work of divine grace uponthe soul justified by the love of Christ.

The believer is gradually cleansed from thecorruption of his nature, and is at lengthpresented ‘faultlesss before the presence of Hisgrory with exceeding joy’.”

• Before putting thisdefinition to the test ofScripture, I want to tellyou about the experienceof a young man who wasconfronted with this typeof sanctificationdoctrine…

• Let’s see what happenedto Henry…

H.A. Ironside remembers…

Some time after his conversion, still a teenager:

“I became interested in what were called“holiness meetings” held weekly in the “Army”Hall… At these gatherings an experience wasspoken of which I felt was just what I needed. It was designted by various terms: “The SeondBlessing”, “Sanctification”, “Perfect Love”,“Higher Life”, “Cleansing from Inbred Sin” andby other expressions.”

Page 10: Results of Christ’s death (5): Sanctification

H.A. Ironside remembers…

“Substantially, the teaching was this: In orderto maintain himself in a saved condition, thebeliever needs a further work of grace calledsanctification. This work has to do with sin theroot, as justification had to do with the sinsthe fruit.”

Page 11: Results of Christ’s death (5): Sanctification

H.A. Ironside remembers…

“The steps leading up to this second blessingare:

1. Conviction as to need of holiness

2. Surrender to God

3. Claim in faith the incoming of the Holy Spiritas a refining fire to burn out all inbred sin…

4. Then great watchfulness is required lestSatan deceive the sanctified soul andintroduce again the same kind of evilprinciple…” www.biblecentre.org

H.A. Ironside remembers…

“I remember how often I prayed God to give mydear mother the blessing He had given me andto make her as holy as her son had become. And that pious mother had known Christbefore I was born, and knew her own hearttoo well to talk of sinlessness, though living adevoted, Christ-like life”

H.A. Ironside remembers…“Nearly 18 months of an almost constant

struggle followed… At last I became sotroubled I could not go on with my work…Five years of active work had left me almost anervous wreck, worn out in body and mostacutely distressed in mind. I saw only theblackness of despair before me; but yet I knewtoo well His love and care to be completelycast down…”

Ironside then goes on to recount how the truth burstupon his soul… www.biblecentre.org

Sanctified believers can be carnal

Example: the Corinthians

Paul …unto the church of God which is at Corinth, tothem that are sanctified in Christ Jesus…

…And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as untospiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes inChrist.

… for ye are yet carnal.

What is sanctification?

In the Bible…

– the term ‘sanctification’ is used of persons andthings

– The thought is ‘setting apart’, ‘separating’

• set apart from ordinary uses

• to be for God's own possession and use andenjoyment

– The opposite is ‘profanation’

www.biblecentre.org

Page 27: Results of Christ’s death (5): Sanctification

Two meanings of sanctification

• Positional and practical

– Positional: we are holy, sanctified, once for all, setapart for God as a result of the work of Christ onthe cross

– Practical: because we are sanctified (positionally)we also want to (and should) live holy lives, i.e.live as people who are set apart for God!

Sanctification by the Spirit

“God hath from the beginning chosen you tosalvation through sanctification of the Spiritand belief of the truth:”

2Th 2:13

Sanctification by the Spirit speaks of theexperimental side – how this setting apart wasbrought about in us.

Page 33: Results of Christ’s death (5): Sanctification

Sanctification by the Word

“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word istruth. ”
