(A) Research and Teaching
More than 30 years of experience in research and teaching of post graduate
and undergraduate students of Botany. Teaching Molecular Biotechnology,
Recombinant DNA Technology and Tissue Culture since 1997. Currently working
as Reader in Botany and Head, Department of Biotechnology since October 2,
1997.
Started research work with Cytotaxonomy and mutagenesis in Indian
Charophyta and continued with Giemsa C-banding techniques; Biochemical
markers like Superoxide dismutase and Glycollate oxidase in Charophyta;
mutagenesis of medicinal plant extracts; molecular characterization and DNA
fingerprinting for biodiversity of Charophyta; Molecular characterization of
sugarcane viruses; Micropropagation of Bambusa sp.; Genetic transformation of
tomato for delaying shelf life etc. Currently busy with PCR based techniques,
Tissue culture and micropropagation, Gene transfer experiments on various
plants etc.

BIO-AGENTS and Bio-C (PROF S K BHATNAGAR- Co-PI)
Research Highlights :
1. Made exhaustive survey of 7 districts from Rohilkhand division to explore
Charophyta for Cytotaxonomic and mutagenic studies.
2. Discovered the genus Tolypella for the first time from India and worked on
various facets like morphology, cytotaxonomy, karyology of Tolypella..
3. First to investigate on Giemsa C-Banding, Molecular markers,
Charophycean ancestry of land plants, DNA isolation and molecular
characterization in Charophyta, Genetic transformation in Tomato and
Micro propagation of Bambusa wamin etc.
4. Worked with French, British, Dutch and Greek scientists under
collaborative projects sanctioned by the Indian National Science Academy
(INSA) and University Grants Commission (UGC).
5. Prof. M. Guerlesquin of France visited India and worked with the proposer.
6. During 1985, the proposer visited European countries as INSA-COSTED
VISITING SCIENTIST to work with Prof. R. Corillion, Prof. M. Guerlesquin
and Dr Elizabeth Lambert in Universite Catholique, Angers, France. During
this visit, collaboration with Prof. M B E Godward of Queen Mary College,
University of London, Prof. C G Vosa of Oxford University, Oxford, Prof. Cl.
Gillet of Brussels, Belgium and Dr E X Maier of Free University, Amsterdam
was made to investigate the possibilities of C-banding and Meiotic behaviour
of Charophyte taxa.
7. During recent visit as INDO-GREECE VISITING SCIENTIST-2004, the
possibilities of mutual collaborative researches on the fields of electron
microscopy of Charophytes (with Prof. I Tsekos, Aristotle University,
Thessaloniki), molecular characterization of Indian and Greek Charophytes
(with Prof. Katsaros, University of Athens, Prof. Kalliopi, University of Crete,
Crete and Prof. Lemonia, University of Athens, Athens) were explored and
progress has been made in this direction.
8. Organized a MINI SYMPOSIUM on CHARALES : STONEWORTS TO
MOLECULAR TOOLS at 11th International Conference on Applied
Phycology, National University of IRELAND, Galway from June 21-June 27,
2008.
