2 to better understand the uses of the Ross resume and the types of information to include.

Create your resume in iMpact Use the step-by-step instructions in the OCD Guide to Entering Your Resume on iMpact. Once your resume is in iMpact, this

OCD Resume Guide (BBA/MAcc Resume Guide) will help you refine your resume content.

Attend resume workshops Take advantage of resume writing workshops sponsored by the Office of Career Development and resume-related Club Events

hosted by student clubs. Use these resources first before taking your resume to a company-sponsored resume critique session.

Understand and emphasize skills that match your career target and that reflect your particular strengths An effective resume goes far beyond a static list of job duties; it reflects a student’s functional/industry focus and represents

skills that are valued by employers in that area. Though leadership and teamwork are valued in every company, it is your task

to go beyond these skills when writing your resume. Use BBA/MAcc CareerLeader and other resources listed in Career Tracker

Step 2 on iMpact to identify core skills for your target function/industry.

Maximize experiences using Action-Context-Results (ACR) format ACR format is explained in this guide. Bullet points in the ‘Experience’ section should be in ACR format and should be two to

three lines in length.

Use the Resume Checklist The Resume Checklist is included in this Guide. Use it as you prepare your resume and especially to proofread your resume.

Schedule a resume review Discuss and maximize your resume content with an OCD staff Career Counselor or with peer Career Counselors, who provide

the most up-to-date industry perspectives. Be prepared to revise and customize as necessary.

Publish your resume on iMpact In order for your resume to be included in the official resume book/database, please publish your “Default” resume. Recruiters

use the resume book/database to seek potential candidates to interview.

Refer to “OCD Career Tracker Step 2: Develop Resume” for a Resource List. Additional resources:

Vault and WetFeet resume guides are available through Kresge Library Career Resources Resume books from previous classes are available in E2420 [Office of Student Life/Ross Career Counseling]

Overview

The resume in the recruiting process

Your resume is the first tool of the recruiting process and is the platform from which to build your arsenal of career tools. Recruiters use resumes to

evaluate the sufficiency of the candidate’s background for the job for which they are hiring and to determine whom to interview. Most BBAs have

limited professional experience, and most recruiters understand that. Therefore, recruiters don't necessarily require direct industry experience on

the resume. However, the resume must highlight transferable skills (e.g. quantitative analysis, creativity, leadership, etc.) that are relevant to the

position being sought.

When do I need to complete my iMpact resume?

Students seeking internships must complete their iMpact resumes by the deadline date announced by OCD. Students must have a professionally

presentable resume published online by that date. Sometime after that date, on-campus recruiters will have the opportunity to download and view

resumes on iMpact. The iMpact resume is an electronic file online, so updates to the resume are possible even after the deadline date, and

recruiters will automatically have access to the updated version. It is in a student’s best interest to meet the default resume deadlines, since it will

then be reviewed by OCD staff and can be made available to recruiters.

What makes for a good resume?

A good resume consists of three elements. First, the education section should clearly signal the career intent of the student (i.e., marketing,

strategy, high-tech, healthcare, etc.); a good resume does not signal intent in multiple directions (i.e., marketing AND finance). Secondly, the

experience section should highlight the relevant skills and accomplishments for the targeted career focus. Lastly, the additional section should

contain information about the candidate that differentiates him or her from other competitive applicants.

On-campus recruiting requires a resume in iMpact format

In order to minimize confusion around issues of resume formatting for students as well as for recruiters, all students who wish to use on-campus

recruiting services must create a resume in the iMpact format. For on-campus recruiting the student must have a professionally presentable

Default resume published online on iMpact by the deadline announced by OCD. Students who are recruiting off-campus are not required to use the

iMpact resume format, though it is still recommended, since it is an easily readable format.

'Default' resume and other resumes

The Default resume is the online resume that recruiters may access. If students want to participate in the resume database, they must publish a

professionally presentable resume by the resume deadline announced by OCD. Students can create multiple versions of the resume on iMpact in

addition to the Default resume. These versions will not be viewable by recruiters as part of the resume database, but students can use these

resumes when dropping resumes and cover letters for interview opportunities. Keep in mind that many recruiters are also Ross alumni and may be

able to view your student profile on iMpact. Make sure your story (focus) in your resume is consistent with your Personal Profile on iMpact.

Can I exceed one page on a resume?

For on-campus recruiting, students must use the iMpact format, and the iMpact format is restricted to one page, which is the standard for business

resumes. If you are recruiting off-campus, you can create a resume outside of iMpact. Sometimes, industry standards (non-business) would dictate

a format different from and possibly longer than the iMpact format. In those cases, students are obviously free to construct a custom resume

suitable for the industry.

Representing yourself accurately in the resume

Portraying yourself accurately on the resume is important. If you claim that an action you took raised $30K for the University Hospital, be prepared

to justify and support that claim. If you state that you are conversant in Spanish, be ready to talk to the interviewer in Spanish. In the end, you are

responsible for the accuracy of anything you put on your resume. Misrepresenting yourself on your resume may have severe consequences on your

career search outcome and the school’s reputation.

Also, during interviews, it is very common for interviewers to ask you to discuss points on your resume in detail. If you put something on your

resume, be prepared to talk about it in an interview.

Education Section

The Education Section The most important factor in this section is the school brand and degree. However, this will generally be the same for everyone (with the exception

of dual-degree students, for whom the secondary affiliation is significant).

Recruiters also use this section to understand your career direction. Much of this is done by looking at your academic and extracurricular choices.

Certain recruiters (mainly consulting and investment banking) also give consideration for academic performance.

This is what recruiters look for in this section:

- Proper academic emphasis - Good academic performance including scholarships and honors - Participation in relevant activities - Leadership roles among peers

1. Proper academic emphasis The first bullet of the BBA Education section should be about your academic emphasis. An academic emphasis conveys a message about what career area you are targeting, so we recommend that you indicate no more than two academic emphases. Academic emphases are valid academic disciplines (Strategy, Finance, Marketing, Accounting, etc.). They do not necessarily have to correlate to Ross academic departments; e.g., Real Estate and Corporate Social Responsibility are valid emphases. However, academic emphases should reflect subjects that can be studied, rather than a career objective (Consulting, for example, is not an academic emphasis). The only exception is that students may use the term "General Management" to indicate a general education. Be thoughtful as you indicate your emphasis, as a recruiter may choose to discuss your area of emphasis in detail.

2. Grades

Recruiters from different industries treat grades differently. Research your company of interest to determine any GPA requirement they may have. In fields in which employers care about GPA, if you leave your GPA off, you risk employers assuming that it is very low.

Based on feedback from recruiters, OCD recommends including your GPA on your resume if it is a 3.0 or above. That said, disclosing your GPA on your resume is your decision. If you are unsure about whether to include your GPA, talk with a Career Counselor.

3. Calculating Grades If you choose to disclose your GPA, your Ross GPA must be kept separate from your GPA prior to coming to Ross. All classes taken during your sophomore, junior, and senior years will count towards the business school GPA. Also, under the Ross education section, it must be your cumulative GPA; no other calculation based on a subset of classes (e.g., 'concentration GPA') is permitted.

4. Participation in relevant activities

Your club involvement and other extracurricular activities give a strong indication to a recruiter regarding where your interests lie. Therefore it is important to mention the relevant activities you are involved with while at the Business School. For example, if you are targeting consulting as a career, you may want to indicate your membership in the Consulting Club and the times where you were a finalist in case competitions. Understand that recruiters like focus, so there's no need to mention everything; just the things which are relevant.

5. Leadership roles

Companies are always looking for candidates with strong leadership traits. One way to highlight leadership is to indicate leadership roles in student activities. The school provides ample opportunity to take on leadership roles such as section leader or club officer roles. If you have leadership roles in organizations outside of the Ross School of Business, include them as well. NOTE TO STUDENTS WHO ARE TUTORS, GRADERS, AND/OR RESEARCH ASSISTANTS: Representing your role accurately on your resume is important. Since the title, “Teaching Assistant” is often synonymous with “Graduate Student Instructor,” you should not refer to yourself as a “Teaching Assistant.” Rather, use the title for which you were hired and/or a phrase indicating what you do.

Experience Section

The Experience Section

The Experience section is the most important part of the resume. Recruiters are looking for skills and accomplishments

that will transfer into your targeted career. In this section, you'll want to highlight three to five key experiences. These

experiences need not be 'work' experiences and can include extracurricular and possibly academic experiences.

This is what recruiters look for in this section:

- Initiative, leadership and teamwork - Vivid examples in ACR (Action-Context-Result) format - A history of accomplishment and results

1. Leadership and participation You don't necessarily need big name companies on your resume in order to be a good candidate. What recruiters care about is that you have sought out opportunities where you could develop yourself professionally. The opportunities can be community-service, social/clubs, academic, athletic, or work-related. What's important is that you are able to use relevant professional skills in those experiences (leadership, teamwork, analytical thinking, communication skills, problem solving, etc.).

2. Bullet points in ACR format

If possible, write all bullets in the experience section in the Action-Context-Result (ACR) format. Bullets in the ACR format do the best job in conveying the skill or experience in a context that the reader can appreciate. Usually, a bullet in the ACR format will take up two to three lines in the iMpact format. If your bullet is one line long, more than likely, it is not in the ACR. Advice on how to write a bullet in the ACR format is included later in this document.

An example bullet in ACR format

Action Negotiated…

Context …with local area schools to donate excess food toward local soup kitchen…

Result …resulting in 25% increase in food distribution for 2006 for the organization.

3. A history of accomplishments and results It's critical to include a result in your bullets in the Experience section whenever possible. The inclusion of results gives the reader the sense that the candidate is a person who accomplishes what he or she sets out to do and who would be capable of making an impact within an organization. Where possible, quantify results in order to let the reader appreciate the scope of the accomplishment. Otherwise it is also acceptable to include a qualitative result.

______________________________________________________________________________________________ Should I be including high school activities?

If you are a junior or a senior, you'll want to let your college experience speak for itself. That means you'll want to avoid putting high school experiences in this section. However, there is a difference between a high school activity (e.g. yearbook) and an activity that occurred during high school (e.g. created online business). Activities 'that occurred during high school' are acceptable to include. If there is something you want to include from high school (e.g. team captain, valedictorian, etc.), use bullets in the Additional section. Sophomores, it is more acceptable to have some high school experiences on your resume.

Proper space allocation You want to make sure that you allocate more bullets and space to the roles which are more relevant to the job that you are seeking. More than likely, your more recent job roles will be more significant than those which are further in the past. If you are stretched for space, you may choose not to put any bullets below a particular role.

Additional Section/Overall Cohesion

Additional Section The Additional section serves an important role to provide a "glimpse" of the candidate outside the realm of work and education. Because "likeability" is a factor when it comes to business school recruiting, recruiters use this section to help form an opinion on how interesting they find the candidate. Often, during interviews, recruiters will refer to this section to make small talk. Make sure that you are able to discuss any point you make in this section. This is your chance to win over an interviewer with topics you like to discuss.

This is what recruiters look for in this section: - Anything unique you can say about yourself

- Your key interests and hobbies

- Activities you participate in on a voluntary basis

- Language proficiencies, relevant technical capabilities, work certifications

Be specific; Be unique Rather than saying you like to cook, be specific. Use detail such as, "Enjoy cooking in the French / Mediterranean style." Rather than saying

you like camping, say, "survived two-week wilderness trip in Rocky Mountains with Outward Bound." You want to portray yourself in the most

personally interesting way possible, and using specific language and vivid descriptions can help you do that.

Overall Cohesion Once you've completed a rough draft of the resume, it's time to look over the resume to make sure the important

ideas are being conveyed:

Education Section: Career Intent In this section, you want to make sure that your business school activities (academic and extracurricular) are pointing toward a specific career

function/industry. Eliminate those items which may cause a reader to doubt your focus. Once you've done that, include relevant leadership

positions you hold or have held. Lastly, for certain industries, include grades and test (e.g., SAT) scores.

Experience Section: Skills and Accomplishments In this section, you want to make sure that your bullets convey that you have applied the key transferable skills which are important for that

particular function or industry. What are the key skills you wanted to highlight about yourself? Do those skills come through in a strong way?

Write your bullets in the ACR format. Finally, allocate more space towards the more important roles you have held.

Additional Section: Personal Interests 'This doesn’t have to be a very long section, but don't omit this section just to squeeze your resume down to one page. In this section, you

should mention the most important things someone should know about you outside of work and studies. Include activities that are personally

significant to you and that help “tell your story.”

Writing Bullets in the ACR Format

Elements of the ACR Bullet

ACR Bullets

Typically a two- or three-line bullet in a resume

Used for bullets in the ‘Experience’ section

Concise; helps with brevity

Action Begin with an action verb that conveys a skill (Led, Implemented, Analyzed, Created, Collaborated, etc.)

Avoid beginning with a ‘result’ verb (Improved, Reduced, Increased, Resulted in…); save it for the latter part of the bullet

Normally use past tense, but it's fine to use present tense for current tasks

Context The ‘Context’ portion is to provide the reader with an adequate sense of the following for the task:

~ The Business Reason (improve satisfaction, reduce cost…)

~ The Scope (how big? how many people? cost?)

~ The Significance (why is this project or activity significant?)

~ The Constraints (why is this project a challenge?)

Assume the reader is completely unfamiliar with your industry and provide context accordingly

Result Two types of Results:

~Quantitative (reduced cost by $X, increased sales by X%, launched product X months ahead of schedule)

~Qualitative (enabled client to do X, presented findings to CEO, awarded X prize)

For current tasks, ‘expected results’ will often suffice

Don’t exaggerate or ‘make up’ results

Examples Reviewed 20+ applications and conducted five to ten interviews per semester for scholarship candidates and summer program

participants, selecting qualified applicants based on academic merit and demonstration of leadership.

Analyzed break-even point of local food business and designed surveys to evaluate customer satisfaction, resulting in elimination of

unprofitable items.

Organized and emceed charity concert that featured four bands from across the Midwest and raised over $1,000 for national Cystic

Fibrosis Foundation.

Action Initiated…

Context …design and implementation of internal excel database with over 700 key clients, potential clients, and firm competitors…

Result ...to help transform and improve firm’s process of managing strategic relations.
