To whom it may concern,
Having spent the last seven years at Rafael Viñoly Architects (RVA) I have grown accustomed to the rigors
of high-profile design. At this time I am in search of new challenges and I am interested in opportunities that
may be available in the San Francisco Bay Area or in countries abroad.
Since joining RVA I have drawn technical and process related experience from talented colleagues and my
time on large-scale construction sites. Most recently, my efforts have been focused on New Stanford Hospital
(NSH) in the San Francisco site office. On this BIM project I have experienced the advantages of design assist
project delivery through extensive pre-coordination with contractors. My work-sessions with product vendors
and senior designers have produced detailed documents for custom architectural components. Previously, I
worked in the RVA Chicago site office where I collaborated with medical planners and owners’ staff for the
production of the Center for Care & Discovery (CCD). As a primary member of the design team, from SD through
CA, my role had encompassed all facets of design service for a large portion of interior construction. Through
direct, daily communication with the client, building users and CM, as well as coordination of consultants’ work,
I have gained sensitivity to the various perspectives involved in project delivery. In the past I contributed to
finalize CDs for City College School of Architecture and assisted in the CA effort for the completion of Bronx
County Hall of Justice. Prior to RVA, I spent one year at Alfredo De Vido Architects in New York, where I was
exposed to a variety of small projects and afforded daily interaction with the principal. Among SD for several
projects in this office, I was responsible for CDs of two private residences.
I emerged from a cultivating program at Virginia Tech, including a semester in Europe, with an interest in
architecture that is rooted in material, detail and hierarchy, and the exploration of their roles as instruments in
design. As architects, I believe it is our professional responsibility to investigate and encourage sustainable
practices. What motivates me is the continual pursuit of order in the architectural process. Having found an
understanding for the need to create, I maintain a reputation for superior diligence in my work. My experience
has enabled me to visualize three-dimensionally and to make appropriate decisions regarding detailing and
spatial design. Such background has proven essential throughout my professional career.
I seek an environment of experienced colleagues who share a common interest in thought-provoking work
and a refined strategy for the delivery of a quality product. I remain eager to devote my experience and potential
in an office where I will be encouraged to develop my professional skills toward this goal. I have included a copy
of my resume and a few examples of my project experience to further demonstrate my abilities. I would be
grateful for an opportunity to meet and discuss my qualifications for an existing opening, or for an informative
discussion on office structure and design philosophy should a position become available befitting my experience.
Thank you for your consideration.
Kind regards,
James W. Lancia III
