History of Phelan BuildingSan Francisco’s landmark Phelan Building has a long and storied past. The original structure, built in 1881, was a six-story, bay-windowed flatiron constructed by pioneer banker and capitalist James Phelan. Destroyed by fire as a result of the 1906 earthquake, it was reconstructed in 1908 under the direction of Phelan’s son, James Duval Phelan, who had previously served as San Francisco’s mayor.
James D. Phelan commissioned architect William Curlett to design the current architectural masterpiece, a Renaissance/Baroque wedge- shaped structure using glazed cream terra cotta. It was likely the largest structure in the city clad with this favorite reconstruction material and an outstanding example of Phelan’s desire to make the downtown area like the “Great White City” of Chicago’s 1893 World’s Fair. The new building instantly became one of the most prominent and preeminent office structures in San Francisco.
TodayThis beautiful flatiron-designed property is an 11-story mixed-use retail and office building with 31,000 square feet and 328 ft of frontage along Market Street. It continues to be a showcase of San Francisco’s retail district with its two monumental fa-çades. Handsomely detailed and spectacularly sited, the build-ing remains one of the most prominent on Market Street and a superb example of the dwindling number of flatirons that were once a common feature in the area.
