Retention of Undergraduate Students

Fall 2014 to Fall 2015

Executive Summary

This report tracks the enrollment patterns of undergraduate students enrolled in the Fall 2014 term. Using

the Banner system, students were classified as enrolled, withdrawn, or graduated for Fall 2015. Those

classified as graduated received their degrees in Fall 2014, Spring 2015, or Summer 2015. The tables that

follow look at four different (but overlapping) cohorts of students: all undergraduates, new freshmen, new

freshmen who were provisionally admitted, and new transfer students.

The overall retention rate for undergraduates who did not graduate fell 0.7% to 74.7%. Non-minority

retention rose (2.4%), while minority retention fell two percent. For new freshmen, the retention rate is up

3.7%, to 69.9%. The retention rate for provisional admits fell from 62.9% to 54.0%, however there was an

increase in students from 35 to 63. The retention rate for new transfers fell four percent, from 69.2 to

65.3%. The retention rate for students classified as Juniors or Seniors fell five percent collectively, after

adjusting for graduates.

Main Report

This report tracks the enrollment patterns of the 2,268 undergraduate students enrolled in Fall 2014 who

were classified Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, or Seniors. Students who entered in Summer 2014 were

counted as new students (either freshman or transfer) in Fall 2014 as well. Postbaccalaureate students from

the total undergraduate enrollment have been excluded in this analysis.

Retention percentages for the various cohorts for Fall 2014 to Fall 2015 are below. Also included are the

rates from previous years for comparison. Reports for each year can be found at http://www.hbu.edu/ire.

gender, ethnicity, minority status, citizenship, test score ranges, classification, high school quartiles,

academic index, residency (on- or off-campus and county), suspension/probation status, and

SOAR/Welcome Days attendance. Please note that in the tables that follow, "Withdrawn" does not refer

to students who have gone through an official withdrawal process with the University. It refers to students

who have not graduated and who have not enrolled for the Fall 2015 term.
