T he thought of aging takes the back seat in the drive of life, but the baby boomers who have worked their

entire adult lives and are ready to relax might want to start looking at retirement community options before it becomes a necessity. By pre-planning, retirees can make choices about the next step whether it includes an independent living facility or one that offers short- or long-term care.

Cincinnati has a variety of retirement communities, including Episcopal Retire-ment Homes and Evergreen Retirement and Wellness Community.

Evergreen Retirement and Wellness Community in Finneytown sits on 65 acres of land that looks and feels like a country club with amenities that include a golf course, lush courtyards and restaurant-style dining.

One of the biggest draws is the atmo-sphere.

“Our dining experience is second to none, meals are served restaurant style with hosts and servers,” says executive director Jeremy Yates.

Residents will find their meals made by an executive chef and staff, serving healthy and nutritious meals. It also provides a cozy environment that is perfect for social-izing with other residents.

Pet owners don’t have to worry about leaving their beloved companions behind either.

thinking about adding a dog park to our facilities,” says Yates. “It’s therapeutic to residents, because their pets are compan-ions to them.”

Allowing pets and providing high-quality meals are just two aspects on a much longer list that retirees might want to ask. The list may even scroll to the floor.

The question of “will I lose my inde-pendence” often causes hesitation in the process of finding a retirement commu-nity. According to a survey of 679 AARP members in Ohio, 73 percent were con-cerned about staying in their own homes

as they grow older. “People don’t want to give up their inde-

pendence but at Evergreen it is truly their own place,” says Kristi Guilfoyle, director of sales and marketing.

Evergreen has different housing op-tions, like cottages and apartments that offer residents a mini neighborhood and a chance to make their living space their own.

“An important aspect in choosing the right retirement community is finding the fit for your lifestyle,” says Guilfoyle.

So if you are looking for a space to prac-tice your golf swing, Evergreen might be the community for you.

There are other factors that play into the

choice of a retirement home, such as staff, satisfaction of residents, atmosphere and much more.

“If they (residents) need to change their level of care, we work with them so they can stay here throughout their life,” Yates says.

60 years, Episcopal has served Greater Cincinnati, giving residents high quality care at an affordable rate.

“The perception of the old folks home is long gone,” says Ken Paley, vice president of marketing.

Between 200,000 and 300,0000 Ameri-cans are retiring each month as the baby boomer generation ages. Retirement com-munities are responding with new options to handle such a large group of potential residents. Episcopal has been praised internationally with the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and Continuing Care Accredita-tion Commission (CCAC).

“We will never ask you to leave,” says Paley.

Episcopal works with residents to give them a comfortable environment, helping make a new home for their new residents.

The staff at Episcopal is dedicated to the work they do, which is why there is a

ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONSIt’s an important decision. Think it through.

There are plenty of reasons to move to a retirement community: Freedom from the responsibility of home ownership, a desire to get involved with new friends and new interests, the security of having health care professionals on call, wellness programs, a healthier lifestyle, amenities at your fingertips. Or maybe you would just like to leave the cooking, cleaning and driving to someone else. Whatever your reasons, beware of the “special deals” used to lure you because there are always reasons they are being offered, and this long-term decision is just too important.

Most upscale retirement communities like Deupree House and Marjorie P. Lee have nice pools, good food and many activities. Here are some other things to think about when choosing your new home:

• Do they offer all levels of care for independent living, assisted living, nursing care, and expertise in Alzheimer’s and dementia care?

• Are they accredited by independent and objective organizations such as CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities)?

• What percentage of their apartments are actually occupied?

• If there is an entrance fee, is it refundable and can it be used for healthcare needs in the future?

• If you should run out of money, will you be asked to leave and find a new home or will they let you continue to live in your home with security and dignity and then take care of you if your healthcare needs change?

• Do they have a long track record and a reputation for excellence in both service and healthcare?
