"retouched" movie proposal
DESCRIPTION
Final project for TEL-T206 Kelly Cook, Michele Zehner, Hannah Lin, Will Sanders, Kirsten TorchalskiTRANSCRIPT
Retouched It’s 2010. A Los Angeles-based PEOPLE magazine photo editor, DAN, sits in a dark cubicle editing magazine covers on his computer. He seems bored as he clicks through Photoshop, going about his daily routine. As he absentmindedly and mistakenly changes a model’s hair color for the cover, he talks to his co-worker and roommate, CHUCK, about getting another job. Dan sees his magazine cover at a newsstand on a busy LA street as he’s walking to work. The headline on the gossip magazine next to it speculates about the model’s reason for so drastically changing her hair color. He doesn’t think any more about it, and continues walking. Back at the office, Dan receives instructions from his boss, VICTORIA, that all cover models should be edited to look slimmer. He begrudgingly complies, and we see an array of photos which he has edited. After a month of this, Dan notices a TMZ news report about a mysterious crash diet and plastic surgery combination that many celebrities are using to lose weight. Strangely, all the celebrities mentioned are clients at the ad agency, whose pictures he’s edited. Dan’s become suspicious of this, and stays in his cubicle after his co-workers have left. He goes through all the photos he’s edited in the past month and realizes they match the news report. He uploads a picture of himself and changes his hair color. He looks in the mirror and realizes that the change has had an immediate effect on him. He continues making changes to himself throughout the night, all of which show up in real time. The next day, in between editing pictures of cover models, he uploads pictures from Facebook and begins to edit those. We see him make subtle changes to his friends and his ex-girlfriend. We now see a montage of people in everyday settings, their appearances changing immediately. Dan becomes excited about this new power he has over people’s lives. Victoria harasses him about fooling around with pictures of people other than clients. This continues for a few weeks, during which time he makes subtle changes to her weight and hair color. At the same time, Dan has become a player, making Chuck suspicious. Dan confides in Chuck, who’s even more excited about the prospects that this new power could provide in terms of women.
Later that week, Victoria goes into his cubicle while Dan is away, during which time she discovers that the edits he’s made match the changes that have taken place on the celebrities as well as on her. She confiscates his computer and figures out what’s been happening. Upon request, Dan comes to her office, where she threatens to reveal his secret unless he leaves the magazine. The next day, Dan comes to work and everyone stares at him. He goes to his now-empty cubicle and looks around, confused. Chuck walks up behind him and tells him that Victoria wants to see him in her office. In Victoria’s glass-walled corner office, she tells Dan that he is fired. She tells him not to bother applying for jobs at other advertising agencies, as she refuses to give him a reference. She will also be taking his computer, and he will not be allowed to retrieve any of the photos or his editing program before he goes. Dan is furious, and storms out of her office. About a month has passed. We see Dan and Chuck’s apartment in disarray. There are dirty dishes everywhere and crumpled resumes and job applications litter the floor. Dan looks just as disheveled as his apartment as he walks out of his bedroom to greet Chuck. Chuck has had enough and tells him that he’s got to do something to break his depression. Chuck tells him that he’s stolen the specific computer that Dan had been using, and now he can do something profitable with it. Both look thoughtful. We see a large billboard that talks about the latest plastic surgery craze in LA: computerized “retouching”. We now see a busy waiting room of what looks like a doctor’s office. Chuck is checking in patients, and Dan is in the back room with his computer. Men and women walk in, and five minutes later come out looking completely different. Everyone, especially Dan, looks happy. Except Victoria; on the news, we see that she has been fired for demanding ultra-thin cover models. She looks miserable. Dan and Chuck are successful and happy and look exactly the same as they always have.
1 INT. OFFICE CUBICLE – DAY 1
DAN sits in a dark cubicle in front of a brightly lit computer screen. He is editing photographs of models on Photoshop while talking to CHUCK, who sits in the cubicle next to him.
DAN
(clicking the mouse)
Dude, I’m so over this shit. I just sit here, all day, making hot girls that I’m never gonna meet look even hotter. I mean seriously, what’s the point?
CHUCK
Quit your bitching. It’s a job, man. Pays the rent. Let’s go out tonight. Maybe you’ll see one of these chicks out or something. She might be a fan of your work...
DAN
Yeah whatever. I’m gonna finish up this one and then let’s get outta here.
CHUCK
Hell yeah. What are you workin’ on anyway?
DAN
Just messing around.Whatdya think about Tyra Banks as a blonde?
(laughing)
CHUCK
You’re crazy, man. Let’s get outta here before the Nazi comes looking..
(leave building happy)
Morning, Vict..
VICTORIA
(condescending)
Yeah, yeah. I don’t need your excuses. Listen. I need these pictures edited by noon. These girls are a size 2. They need to be a size 0. I don’t know why you don’t know that by now! I have a meeting til lunch, and I expect them on my desk when I get back. Think you can handle that, at least?
DAN
Sure thing, boss.
VICTORIA
(rushing away)
On my desk before lunch. You better get it right, Daniel.
DAN
(muttering)
Dan. It’s Dan.
VICTORIA
(over her shoulder)
Whatever. Get it done.
4 INT. OFFICE CUBICLE – DAY 4
DAN storms into his cubicle and tosses the stack of pictures onto his desk. He pounds on his computer keys and goes to work.
MONTAGE OF PICTURES DAN IS EDITING
5 INT. OFFICE FLOOR LOUNGE – DAY 5
DAN is sitting with CHUCK at a table. They’re drinking coffee and watching a cheesy TMZ NEWS REPORTER report on the latest pop culture news. Before and after pictures of celebrities flash across the screen as the reporter talks.
REPORTER
I have the 411 on the latest scandal in Hollywood! Celebrities on crash diets AND having plastic surgery?! Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Adam Sandler are looking good for their ‘Wedding Singer’ sequel. Whatever they’re doing is working ...Looks like it’s shaping up to be the ‘hottest’ flick of the summer!
CHUCK
Damn, I wonder what they’re doing. Weren’t they just here for a photoshoot? They didn’t look THAT good...well, except maybe Cameron Diaz. She’s hot.
DAN
Yeah. I guess the industry’s really putting the pressure on ‘em. Victoria’s on this crazy rampage about making the celebs skinnier for the covers, too.
CHUCK
Y’know, if I had all that time and money, I’d be smokin’ hot too.
(eating a donut)
Eh, whatever. That’s why they pay me the big bucks to stay behind the scenes.
(both laughing)
See ya back in there, man.
DAN
(lost in thought)
Yeah, see ya..
6 INT. OFFICE CUBICLE – NIGHT 6
The office floor is deserted. DAN is sitting at his desk, clicking through old picture files. He finds the pictures that match those of the celebrities on the news report. He realizes that the real-life pictures of the celebrities are replicas of his edited photos.
DAN
(talking to himself)
Holy shit..there’s no way..they were JUST here. No waythey look like that from a crash diet.
(taking out his iPhone)
I’m just gonna..
(takes a picture of himself and uploads it)
Let’s see..
(changes hair from brown to blonde)
Ok. Maybe I’m crazy..yeah.
(looks in mirror)
Oh shit! I’m not crazy..oh crap! But how..there’s no way I..
(makes more changes as hours pass)
7 INT. OFFICE CUBICLE – DAY 7
DAN leans over his desk, staring intently at his computer. His eyes are glazed over and he’s disheveled, as if he’s been up all night. CHUCK walks in and sees him frantically switching between Facebook and Photoshop.
CHUCK
Dude, did you even come home last night? You look like shit.
DAN
Yeah..I..
CHUCK
(looking at Dan’s computer)
What are you doing?
(pointing to a picture)
Isn’t that Tracy? Dude, are you still obsessing over that psycho? You really gotta let that one go. It’s been 6 months, man.
DAN
What? Oh..yeah well. What are you looking at my stuff for anyway? Don’t you have your own shit to do?
CHUCK
(walking away from Dan)
Ok whatever. Chill out. Better quit looking at your crazy ex before our crazy boss notices.
DAN
Yeah yeah.Whatever.
(continues uploading and editing pictures)
8 MONTAGE OF EDITED PHOTOS 8
Pictures edited by Dan show up as changes in real-time. Montage of people in situations across the city as these changes suddenly appear.
9 INT. OFFICE CUBICLE – DAY 9
DAN is happily sitting at his computer, a random picture on his computer screen as he edits it. VICTORIA briskly walks by, does a double take, and backs up. She stands quietly behind him for a moment and becomes furious. CHUCK not-so-subtly tries to warn him.
DAN
(singing to himself)
I’ve got the power hey yea heh
CHUCK
(whispering)
Nazi’s on the prowl.
(pokes head over cubicle)
Dude, seriously, get to work!
DAN
(oblivious)
Uh huh.
CHUCK
(frantically motioning)
Dan! Seriously...
VICTORIA
(standing behind Dan)
Your friend is obviously smarter than you, Daniel.
(Dan jumps)
DAN
Jesus! Oh, Victoria! Morning..
VICTORIA
That’s not one of my models. I wasn’t aware we’d put you in charge of recruiting, Daniel.
DAN
Oh, this? Oh, it’s just..it’s kind of like..
VICTORIA
I could care less what you think it is. It’s NOT what I’m paying you to do.
DAN
I know, but it’s kind of an experiment.
VICTORIA
Does this look like a chemistry lab, Daniel? You don’t do experiments here. You edit pictures. I tell you what to do, and you do it. If that’s too much for you, I’m sure someone else will be happy to deal with your incompetency. Certainly no one who works at this magazine tolerates these “experiments”. Time is money, and you’re wasting a lot of my time.
DAN
(stuttering)
I..just..if you..
VICTORIA
Save it, Daniel. I have better things to do than listen to your excuses. Get back to work now, or you will not have a job tomorrow. Consider yourself warned.
DAN
Ok. I mean, yes, yes ma’am.
VICTORIA
(walking away)
Oh, and Chuck?
CHUCK
(startled)
Wha..yes?
VICTORIA
You might have more sense than your buddy, but if I hear ‘Nazi’ out of your mouth again, you’ll be looking for alternate employment as well.
(struts out, heels clicking)
CHUCK
Dude...
DAN
Whatever man. She’s all talk. She’s gotta learn some people skills. Let’s teach her..
CHUCK
Are you crazy? She’s ‘gotta’ do nothing. She’s the boss! You’ve lost it, Dan, seriously.
DAN
We’ll see...
10 TIME PROGRESSION 10
DAN edits a photo of VICTORIA several times, gradually adding weight and grey hair. Each time he does this, Victoria looks in the mirror, more confused and upset each time.
11 INT. DAN AND CHUCK’S APARTMENT – NIGHT 11
DAN leaves for a date with a normal-looking GIRL as CHUCK sits on a beat-up old couch watching TV. Later, Dan comes home with a girl who looks completely different than the one he left with. CHUCK, noticing this, confronts Dan, who eventually confesses his secret.
CHUCK
Hey, look at you stud. Where you goin’?
DAN
Oh, yeah, I got a date tonight.
CHUCK
No shit? Good for you man. She hot?
DAN
What do you think?
(knock on the door)
That’s her..
CHUCK
(looking through the peephole)
Ehh, she’s alright.
DAN
Whatever dude. You’ll see. Later.
(door closes)
(door opens again, Dan walks in with a different girl)
CHUCK
So how was...Damn, where’d you get her?
DAN
(glaring)
Dude, you saw her before we left. I told you.
GIRL
(giggling)
Danny, I gotta go. Call me later?
DAN
You bet, beautiful.
(girl leaves, door closes)
CHUCK
(walking over to Dan)
That is so not the girl you left with.
DAN
Dude, what the hell is wrong with you? You saw her before we left.
CHUCK
That is NOT the girl I saw. There’s no WAY that girl left with you.
DAN
(sighing)
Ok, asshole, get over here.
CHUCK
(apprehensive)
What? What’re you gonna do?
DAN
I’m just gonna show you something. Don’t flip out, ok?
CHUCK
You are seriously weirding me out, man. What’s going on?
DAN
Ok. So you know how I made Tyra’s hair blonde a couple weeks ago? Like as a joke?
Chuck
Yeah..
DAN
And then she suddenly turns up blonde in real life, right?
CHUCK
What’s the point?
DAN
I did that. I made her hair blonde.
CHUCK
Ok crazy.
DAN
No seriously. The same thing happened with all those celebrities who are on mysterious crash diets. It’s all ME.
CHUCK
You are one seriously narcissistic bastard.
DAN
C’mon I can show you.
12 INT. OFFICE CUBICLE – NIGHT 12
DAN sits at his computer, with CHUCK standing behind him. They are staring at the computer as Dan edits a picture of Chuck.
DAN
Ok, what do you want me to change?
CHUCK
Seriously, this is ridiculous. We’re at work in the middle of the night..
DAN
Fine. I changed your hair. Go look in the mirror.
CHUCK
What, is it gonna be magically blue?
(walks over to the mirror)
DAN
(muttering)
More like red..
CHUCK
HOLY SHIT! Dude did you seriously...did that just happen?!
DAN
I told you! I told you I could do that! Now do you believe me?
CHUCK
Yeah..but this..I mean you could seriously...there could be some money in this, man!
DAN
No. No way. NO ONE can know about this. They’ll put me in the loony bin or jail or something.
CHUCK
But this is seriously cool! Can you get me a hot chick too?
DAN
Is that seriously all you care about right now?
CHUCK
What? It’s an important question!
DAN
(laughing)
You are ridiculous. Let’s get outta here.
(both walk out, Chuck talking and Dan laughing)
13 INT. DAN’S OFFICE CUBICLE – DAY 13
DAN is showing CHUCK his working file of everything he’s done to alter Victoria’s appearance.
CHUCK
Genius. She’s actually paying you to make her uglier.
DAN
It’s pretty damn rewarding.
CHUCK
May I ask why you haven’t given her a Hitler ‘stache yet?
DAN
(Laughing)
Don’t be an idiot. This is art. It has to be subtle yet effective.
CHUCK
You’re full of it.
VICTORIA
(Walking past cubicle, stops upon seeing Chuck.)
What the hell did you do to your hair?
Both men jump and spin around. Dan quickly closes the picture of Victoria, but not before she catches a glimpse of it on his screen.
CHUCK
Uhh it was just someth –-
VICTORIA
Shut up. What were you just working on Daniel?
DAN
(Editing a picture of a model)
This cover.
VICTORIA
I’m not stupid. Open up the picture you were just working on.
DAN
This is what I’ve been doing for the past hour.
VICTORIA
(Stares for several seconds)
Go home.
DAN
What?
VICTORIA
I’m giving you the rest of the day off. You’re welcome. Now leave.
Dan and Chuck look at each other. Dan closes up his work, slowly stands up, and walks out of the cubicle. He makes no eye contact with Victoria, who stares him down as he leaves his workspace.
CHUCK
Was that just for him or…?
Victoria
Get back to work.
Chuck leaves and Victoria darts to Dan’s computer. She opens up the list of most recent pictures he’s worked on and clicks on the one called “NAZI.” She clicks through the layers to see every change made to the original picture of her. She gasps. She slowly leans back, looks down at her body, then at her reflection in the screen. Abruptly, she grabs a flash drive off Dan’s desk, saves the image to it, and takes it as she leaves his cubicle.
14 EXT. OFFICE BUILDING PARKING LOT – DAY 14
Victoria storms out of the building and spots Dan getting into his car. She rushes over to his driver’s side window before he pulls away.
VICTORIA
You wanna explain to me exactly what that file is?
DAN
Which one?
VICTORIA
You know damn well which one. The one of me. What the hell is that?
DAN
I...it’s stupid, I’m sorry. It’s just me and Chuck goofing around.
VICTORIA
Everything you’ve done to that picture has happened to me.
DAN
That’s...a coincidence. Weird.
VICTORIA
Don’t play this game with me Daniel. Every alteration you’ve made to our models has popped up somewhere in the tabloids. I don’t know what this is, but it’s a hell of a lot more than a coincidence.
DAN
I don’t know what it is either.
VICTORIA
It’s twisted, that’s what. I can’t even...how is this real? You’ve ruined lives.
DAN The only life I’ve changed for the worse is yours. And that’s because you’re the only one who’s deserved it.
VICTORIA
Don’t come back. You stay the hell away from this place.
DAN
What? This is beyond my control. You can’t fire me for something I didn’t even create. It just...happened!
VICTORIA
You’re done here. Leave. Leave or I’ll call the cops. I’m sure they can take you to jail for this. By the way, the press is going to love this story.
DAN
I know you won’t tell the press -- it would destroy the entire company’s image! Maybe I’d go to jail, but your career would be dead. Good luck with that one.
VICTORIA
Leave!
Dan peels away, leaving Victoria frozen in shock and filled with rage as she stands in the parking lot.
15 INT. OFFICE CUBICLE – DAY 15
DAN storms into his office building, shirt untucked, to find that his cubicle is empty. CHUCK and his other coworkers watch and explain what they saw.
DAN
(yelling)
What are you all looking at?! Huh? What are..
(sees empty cubicle)
What the..what the hell! Where is my stuff?
CHUCK
Dan...dude..
DAN
Chuck, where the hell is my computer?
CHUCK
Ok buddy, just chill
DAN
Don’t even! WHERE THE HELL IS MY COMPUTER? And the rest of my shit. My pictures, papers...
CHUCK
Victoria took it. She, uh, was in here like an hour ago. She asked what we were staring at too...
DAN
So where did she take it?
CHUCK
I dunno, man. She just grabbed it and left.
DAN
(backing out)
That..that bitch! She can’t do that!
16 INT. VICTORIA’S OFFICE – DAY 16
DAN confronts VICTORIA in her office. The rest of the office can watch from outside the glass, but can’t hear the fight. Dan storms in and then storms out, breaking the glass door on the way.
DAN
You. Can’t. Do. That.
VICTORIA
Do what, Daniel?
DAN
You know what!
VICTORIA
I have better things to do than argue with a former employee, Daniel. What exactly do you want?
DAN
My computer! You took it! That has my files..everything!
VICTORIA
It’s actually the company’s computer, Daniel. And now, it’s mine.
DAN
That’s ridiculous! I did nothing wrong!
VICTORIA
You used company property inappropriately. Now get out of my office before I call security.
DAN
But..you can’t..
VICTORIA
Oh, I can.
(Dan turns to leave)
Oh, and Daniel? Don’t bother applying for any other ad agencies. I’ve already called the major ones, and you won’t be getting a recommendation from here.
(door slams)
17 INT. APARTMENT LIVING ROOM – NIGHT 17
The apartment is a mess; dishes are everywhere and job applications litter the floor. DAN is sitting on the couch, disheveled and looking as though he hasn’t showered in days. CHUCK walks in and confronts him.
CHUCK
Hey dude.
DAN
Oh. You’re home. How was the trip?
CHUCK
Yeah. I’m home. And my home is a freaking mess, dude. What the hell?
DAN
(in a flat voice)
Well, you left for your business trip, since you still have a job, and I didn’t do dishes.
CHUCK
Obviously. Man, you gotta snap out of it.
DAN
Snap out of what?
CHUCK
You know what! You’ve been moping for weeks! At least you were mad before; now you just don’t give a shit!
DAN
(angry)
What do you want me to do? I can’t get a job. I can’t do anything but edit pictures. It’s what I do and I can’t do it. So yeah, I’m sitting on the couch.
CHUCK
What if you could do it?
DAN
What? What are you talking about?
CHUCK
What if you could edit pictures?
DAN
I can’t. Not to where it’ll make any difference. So what’s it matter?
CHUCK
It matters. ‘Cause you can.
(pulls out computer)
Got this outta old Vicki’s office.
DAN
Wha..how the hell’d you get in there?
CHUCK
Who cares? Point is, you could make some serious money from this, man. Like legit cash.
DAN
What am I gonna do? No magazine is gonna hire me.
CHUCK
Who said anything about a magazine?
(smiles)
18 EXT. SIDE OF A HIGHWAY – DAY 18
A large billboard reads “PLASTIC SURGERY? WHO NEEDS IT? COME SEE US AND GET RETOUCHED – LESS PAINFUL, JUST AS EFFECTIVE”
19 INT. OFFICE WAITING ROOM – DAY 19
Many people sit in a large waiting room. CHUCK sits behind the desk, checking people in. DAN is in the back, off in a side room with his computer. Both are wearing hospital scrubs, giving the illusion of a doctor’s office.
CHUCK
And you’re here for what?
YOUNG WOMAN
A, um, nose reconstruction?
CHUCK
Alright, Dr. Dan’ll be with you just a few.
(turning around)
Yo doc!
DAN
Dude, you’re gonna get me in trouble for impersonating a doctor or something.
CHUCK
Well what would you prefer I call you? Dan the Man? That better?
DAN
(laughing)
No. No way.
CHUCK
I’m stickin’ with Dr. Dan then.
DAN
Whatever man. What you want?
CHUCK
Uh first, see how busy it is in here? Do you know how much we’ve made in the last 3 months? I think I deserve at least a thanks.
DAN
You should be happy I let you work for me. Instead of turning you in for stealing ‘company property’...
CHUCK
Yeah whatever dude. Second, look at the TV.
DAN
Why?
CHUCK
Seriously. Just do it.
(Dan and Chuck watch waiting room TV)
TMZ NEWS REPORTER
Former PEOPLE magazine editor of was let go amid scandal today. Victoria Scott has apparently been forcing her cover models to lose inordinate amounts of weight both before and after their photo shoots. She denies all allegations that she has done this, however, and maintains that a former employee started this with a magical editing program. Yes, you heard right. The woman is nuts, folks.
DAN
(laughing hysterically)
Yes, ladies and gents, yes she is.
CHUCK
Old Vicki got what was coming to her, I guess.
DAN
Guess so. Poor Nazi. Now what’s she gonna have a stick up her ass about?
CHUCK
Not having a job is a pretty good one, buddy.
DAN
Yeah...you should get back to checking people in. You might not have a job otherwise.
(smirking)
CHUCK
Whatever you say, Doc.
(glances at his list)
Parker, Sarah Jessica?
(Dan walks away, happy and laughing. Scene fades out.)
