Method:

The heart of this quilt is made up from four 8" blocks. They are not difficult to make but the curves need to be cut

and pieced carefully. refer to the main picture for the colour sequence.

1. The first of the 8" blocks is shown in diagram 2. Using this and the colour sequence from the main picture make up in the following way. Take the 3" corner square and add 1" strips to two adjacent sides. Next add the 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" strip and the 5 1/2" x 2 1/2" strip; again add 1" strips. Lastly, add the 6" x 2 1/2" strip and the 8 1/2" x 2 1/2" strip again adding 1" strips as the outside edge. This block is now complete, make another in the same way.

2. The second block, from which we made the curved templates, is shown in diagram 3. Using this and the colour sequence from the main picture make up in the following way. Take one each of template pieces 1 - 7 which will be sewn together in that order. Turn the outer curve of each piece under 1/4", press and appliqué by hand or ma- chine to the next piece. You will find it easier if you carefully clip the turned under curve before sewing. This block is now complete, make another in the same way.

3. You will now have four blocks. Sew these together as in the main picture and add a 1" strip border all around.

4. Borders - Please refer to diagram 1 and to the main picture for the colour sequence and work as follows. Make up the top border first, take one piece 2 1/2" x 7 3/8" and one piece 2 1/2" x 9 3/8" having the short edges even on the left hand side. Sew together at long edge and cut a 45 degree angle on the right hand edge. Sew this to the left triangle. Reverse this process for the right hand side and sew the two sections together. Repeat to make the bottom border. Sew borders to quilt. The side borders are made up in the same way as the top and bottom borders but you must first add two 2 1/2" squares to both of the 2 1/2" x 9 3/8" strips.

5. Add the final 1 1/2" strips all around and the quilt top is now complete.

6. Sandwich together the quilt top, wadding and backing fabric and quilt by hand or machine. Add the binding and a hanging sleeve if required.
