OUR PASTOR

As testimony is heard before Congress regarding the recently-uncovered practices of Planned Parenthood, the Christian should beware of the “moral camouflage” it’s proponents are putting forward. First off, the debate over the morality of abortion is open to men and women alike. Pro-Abortion advocates would have us think only women should weigh in since a man could never understand the complexity of the issue. This is a fallacy. As a human being and a moral agent, I have a right and obligation to enter the discussion. This argument is meant to supplant the debate over the morality of abortion. It is a smoke-screen. Second, the proponents of abortion argue that it is a women’s health issue and say Planned Parenthood does so much good that it is immoral to take it away from poverty stricken people, especially women. This is a fallacy, also. I listened to testimony from congress this week that clearly demonstrated that the funding that goes toward healthcare for the poor could and should be channeled through government agencies that do not offer abortion or the atrocities that accompany the current practices (harvesting organs, etc.). Why do pro-abortion advocates link the issue of women’s health and abortion? Because they know when abortion stands by itself it is reprehensible. Combining the two issues makes it sound like a reasonable trade off. Again, this is meant to divert from the real issue. Third, within the first few minutes of debate over the morality of abortion, the pro-abortion side brings up the very worst and rarest examples of why abortions take place. They bring up women who are pregnant through rape, incest, etc. While we know that these things have happened and will continue to happen, statistics tell us that the vast majority of legal abortions take place because the mother has simply determined that her life would be better without the child. The reason this argument is not persuasive is because two wrongs never make a right. Ending the life of an unborn human just adds a second crime. Those of you who have known me for some time know that I do not jump into political debate almost ever. For me, though, abortion is not simply a political issue. It is a moral issue, first and foremost. The church is the “pillar and buttress of the truth” and it is our obligation to speak up and make the truth known. To God, murder is wrong. Based on Scripture, moral law, and plain reason, abortion is murder. While I hope Congress does the right thing regarding Planned Parenthood, the real enemy is Roe v. Wade and the culture of death in our country. As long as abortion is legal, there will be avenues, government-funded or not, for would-be mothers to make use of that right. It is our job to speak up for the would-be human beings who are being killed before their lungs develop. Prayerfully, Pastor Michael

Garage Sale Fundraiser for El Salvador We are collecting items to sell to raise funds for the church in Corinto, El Salvador. If you have any items you would like to

donate, please contact the church office. We will have a pricing party on Saturday, October 10, from 8 am until 2 pm and church

members may shop on Sunday, October 11, following the morning service. The garage sale will be held on Saturday, October 17th.

Open dates for placing flowers in the auditorium in honor or memory of a

loved one are: September 6, 13, 20, October 11, 18, & 25th. If you would like to reserve a date, please

Congratulations to Brenda Brushaber on the birth of her new

great granddaughter, Paisley Jane Moore.

She was born on Monday, August 31, 2015, weighing

8 lbs 9 ozs and was 21” long.

Congratulations to Eric & Laura Gossom on the birth of their son, Adam Isaiah Gossom, who was born on Friday, August 21, 2015 weighing 7 lbs 9 ounces. He is welcomed home by his big sister, Chelsea, and older brother, Eric Jr. Grandparents in the church are Michelle and Perry Gossom.

of each month.

These past few weeks in Sunday School we have had the opportunity to study through the first chapters of

Genesis as a Church. As we leave the garden of Eden and head out into the world that has been wrecked by sin, I

am reminded of the horrible nature of sin. The rejection of God’s loving authority, the failure to worship His

goodness, and the rebellion against his sustaining hand, it’s jarring to see just how quickly the perfect creation

declined into a place full of wickedness. As we follow the storyline of Genesis, we quickly see that sinfulness has

sweeping and devastating effects.

Because we know the damaging effects of sin, we want to do our best to lessen its presence in the world. If you

ask most conservative Christians what’s wrong in our country right now, they will rightly tell you that our

problem is that we turned away from God. If you ask for examples of our rebellion you will likely hear about so

called “gay marriage”, abortion, corrupt politicians and the like. These things are certainly wicked and they are

causing hosts of problems in our country. Because of the ill effects of these sins, we make sure our voice is heard

in the public square, we vote with conviction and we hold our politicians accountable for their actions. I wonder,

however, if we take our own sin as seriously as we do the sins of those “out there”.

When we think of sin and it’s effects on the world, it is tempting to think only of the big ones. Yet when we think

of the sin that started all sin, we realize that it would have never made today’s headlines. Adam’s sin was

disobedience against God. That’s all sin is. Do we have proper disgust over the sins in our lives that may have

been wreaking havoc for so long we don’t even notice the damage being caused anymore? Are we willing to

admit that our gossip, our lustful eyes, or our unkind words are sins that cause death and destruction?

As we study through Genesis and see the damage that sin causes, let’s remember that any rebellion against the

most high God is a serious one. The war for holiness is the war against the death and pain caused by sin. We

must daily kneel before the cross as we lay down the burdens of sin and pick up the mysteriously joyful life of

following the one who hung there.

Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also Growing up, I was very involved in sports. Fall was football, winter was basketball, and baseball was in the spring with this cycle occurring year after year. Sports were what the Kelly’s did best. My parents, however, never pressured me to do anything extra curricular or play any sport that I did not initiate or have the desire to play. This was NOT the case (praise the Lord!) when it came to our involvement in our local church body. My parents did not see our relationship with God and His church as “another” activity in our busy lives. Our relationship with God was paramount. But not only was it said, it was preached. Every year my pee wee football coach would schedule practice on Wednesday nights, and every year my parents would let my coach know that Peyton would have to leave early because “we have church” on Wednesday nights. So yes, (it’s exactly what your thinking) I would come to church in my football pads! But every year after a week or two my coach would change practice to Thursday! Every year! This is how my parents preached to me about where God fit into our lives. Nothing was above our Lord. As an 11 year old things changed in my dixie youth baseball league. There were so many players and teams, they could not schedule all the games without playing on Wednesday nights. Well, you guessed it, I just didn’t play on Wednesday nights. My parents actually wrote a letter to the mayor of Montgomery in protest to the schedule! My parents preached to me the place God took in our lives. Flash forward to 2015. As a minister, it breaks my heart to see parents and families who preach a different message to their children. A message that (fill in the blank) is more important than the Lord. We would never say such a thing, but our actions speak louder than words. We exchange gold for plastic. Sports & music taught me many “good” lessons on teamwork and working hard, but the football field, basketball court, baseball field, band hall, & choir room, never taught me about the abundant life in Christ that I learned about at church. Take time to preach to your children and grandchildren. Not just with words, but with your actions. I promise you, they will remember. “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21 For His Glory, Peyton

Senior Adult Activities Seniors, join us for a visit to the Jackson County Fair, Tuesday, October 20. We will leave from the church at 5:15 and return at 7:45 pm. Don’t forget to invite your

friends and family to game night on Thursday, October 29th, at 6 pm. Bring games and game prizes and join us in the fellowship hall. A meal will be provided. If you would like to help with the meal, please con-tact Teresa Dixon. Donations accepted. Sign-up sheets are on the table in the foyer.

Help support the Brotherhood ministry by purchasing a bowl of seafood gumbo on Sunday, October 18th,

immediately following the morning service. Proceeds go toward their Christmas ministry to help needy families.

If you would like to provide a poinsettia flower in honor or memory of a loved one, please fill out a form located in the church foyer and return it to the church office. The cost of the flowers will be $10 which will be due at the time you place your order.

Operation Christmas Child boxes are now available on a table in the auditorium. Each shoebox is an opportunity to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with a child. Flyers with gift ideas and information on how to pack your shoebox are also available. If you don’t want to pack a box, but are able to help with items to go into the shoeboxes a collection box is located by the display. Monetary donations are also appreciated as they will help pay the $7 per box shipping cost. A packing party is planned for Sunday, November 1st.
