Have you ever heard of a Rubber Ducky Race?

Well, if you haven’t now is your chance…

During the month of May, American Red Cross

Rota Volunteers held booth sales to sell and

sponsor Rubber Ducks ready to race! Anyone

could sponsor a duck $5 and/or sponsor and

keep a duck for $7.

Prizes were donated by both the American Red

Cross and local vendors on and around the in-

stallation.

On the day of the event, May, 25, 2013, the

sponsored rubber ducks were lined up in the

housing pool at the ready. Three volunteers cre-

ated waves that carried the ducks to the other

end of the pool.

The first couple of ducks that made it to

the other end of the pool won. This year’s

Rubber Ducky Race, earned an astounding

$928.50! Thanks to our volunteers and

our sponsors for making this event a true

success!

A special thanks goes to Jeff Hyland and

Jen Matamoros for leading the race!

Another special thanks to our sponsors:

Mandy’s Massages, The Rota Golf Course,

The NEX Photo Studio, Takkio’s, and Navy

Federal Credit Union.

part of our team Ashlee!!

Ashlee will be coordinating a special events committee. If you are inter-ested in becoming a part of the spe-cial events/fundraising committee

please contact Ashlee at:

[email protected] to sign-up

today.

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome Ashlee Hier to the Red Cross Rota Volunteer Team!! Ashlee has gra-ciously volunteered to lead our special events and fundraising crew and has suc-cessfully held her first organized event

on August 8, 2013.

We look forward to many more success-ful events and are happy to have you as

Your student will take a Reading Counts quiz about the

book. Help them with reading the questions.

If there is still time, choose one of the activities provided. These might include drawing a picture about the book, filling out an opinion survey, or talking about the begin-

ning, middle, and end.

When it is time to leave, say goodbye to your student and

show eagerness to read with them the next week.

In the end, the main goal of this program is to get kids

reading and to get them excited about reading. Just by

showing up each week to spend an hour reading with a

student will greatly enhance their attitude towards

reading. Please consider donating your time and

making a difference to the students of Rota, Spain.

Ever wonder what the After School Scholars Program is all about? Read on and find out just what volunteering for this

program will entail.

Show up at the elementary school and sign in at the office.

Walk over to the media center and wait for the students to

arrive. (While waiting, pick up your student’s folder and re-

view the book the child will read today.)

As students arrive, greet your student and show excitement and enthusiasm about the book of the day. Talk about the

topic of the book and relate it to real life.

Listen while the student reads. If they have trouble with a

word, help them sound it out.

Talk about what happened in the book.
