Thank you to those who graciously participated in the recent Joyful Discipleship planning study conducted by the Steier Group. Bishop Malone and diocesan leadership reviewed the results of the study and would like to share a summary of them with you. There will be a write-up of the findings and recommendations for the diocese in the May edition of the Catholic Connection. If you have any questions about the planning study or its findings, please contact the diocesan development office in the Catholic Center at 318-868-4441 extension 263.

The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve. This statement by Jesus is to his disciples is not a command, nor is it a pious platitude. It is simply a fact of Christ's divine and redemptive mission and a perfect description of what is necessary for true discipleship.
"I come not to be served, but to serve." Hopefully, we can all think of someone, or maybe many people, who truly exemplify this belief. True disciples have strength and grace in their humility. They have confidence but not arrogance and see others as more important than themselves without allowing themselves to be treated like doormats. Their love of God and neighbor is their highest good and greatest desire, and they embrace their cross because it is a sign of the mission entrusted to them in baptism. They are steadfast in the faith, persistent in hope, and sacrificing in love. They have an authority about them, but they do not lord it over others. Instead, Christ is Lord of their authority and they conform themselves to his heart. If this description doesn't fit anyone we know, then it is the perfect occasion for us to become that person. For as we are united to Christ in baptism, we are also given the grace - we are empowered to live and act under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We can love as Christ loves, and serve as he does. The disciples were concerned with who would hold positions of honor in Christ's kingdom. Ironically, this is a worldly concern imposed upon a kingdom whose fullness is not of this world. What is of this world is the opportunity to serve God, and one another, in an honorable and virtuous way. As faithful disciples, it is a chance too good and too important to let it pass us by. Bread for the Journey
El Hijo del Hombre no vino para ser servido sino para servir. Esta declaración de Jesús a sus discípulos no es un mandato, ni es una perogrullada piadosa. En cambio, Cristo es Señor de su autoridad y ellos se conforman a su corazón. Si esta descripción no se ajusta a nadie que conozcamos, entonces es la ocasión perfecta para que nos convirtamos en esa persona. Porque así como estamos unidos a Cristo en el bautismo, también se nos da la gracia - estamos empoderados vivir y actuar bajo la guía del Espíritu Santo. Podemos amar como Cristo ama y servir como él lo hace. Los discípulos estaban preocupados por quién ocuparía posiciones de honor en el reino de Cristo. Irónicamente, esta es una preocupación mundana impuesta a un reino cuya plenitud no es de este mundo. Lo que es de este mundo es la oportunidad de servir a Dios, y unos a otros, de una manera honorable y virtuosa.
