Support the 2018 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal this #Giving Tuesday!

The Diocese of Joliet is participating in #Giving Tuesday! If you have yet to donate to the 2018 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA), please mark your calendar for Tuesday, November 27. The 2018 CMAA goal of $8.2 million is within reach — but we need the help of everyone in the diocese. Every gift, no matter the size, is greatly appreciated and will help support 30 ministries that benefit every parish in the diocese, including ours. Remember, 70 percent of any amount we raise over our parish goal is returned to us for our use. This is a great opportunity for our parish. Our parish has now raised $22,363 of our $35,800 for the 2018 CMAA. Thank you to everyone who has already pledged their gift to the 2018 CMAA, and for being a partner in caring to so many in our diocese. For more information about the CMAA before #Giving Tuesday, please follow @DOJCMAA on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram or visit jolietdioceseappeal.org.

  • Our Lord Jesus Christ the King

    ARE YOU OR AREN’T YOU?

Few things are as frustrating as not getting a “yes” or “no” when we have posed a “yes or no” question. Putting ourselves in Pilate’s place today, we can feel his frustration in the debate with Jesus about his kingship and the source of his kingdom. Pilate was a potent and wily Roman authority; he lived by one of the primary lessons of staying in power: know exactly who your opponent is. It is doubtful that the person of Jesus of Nazareth posed much of a threat to Pilate, but what he represented as the social and religious force with which he seemed to be connected very clearly could have been. So Pilate naturally wanted to know who was standing before him, a king or not, and if so, what kind of king? Pilate wanted to know what to get ready for when dealing with this man. We would do well to make Pilate our role model in this regard.

IS IT OR ISN’T IT? As Jesus rightly tells Pilate, his kingdom is not of this world. It isn’t. But Christians believe that, in Jesus Christ, his kingdom has broken into the world, and continues to be made manifest in the world until the final day of his glorious return. A very early Christian term, autobasilea, was used to say that Jesus was the “kingdom‑in‑himself” on earth. As we, the Church, celebrate this feast of Christ our King, we recall our own mission through baptism to be “Christ’s‑kingdom‑in‑ourselves” and to do our own part to continue introducing his reign wherever it is not yet a part of this world. A look back at our whole Church year from this final Sunday will show us that this reign in Christ is one of love, of proclaiming salvation, of healing, of forgiving and reconciling, of humble service, of self‑giving. We pray “Your kingdom come” because it isn’t completely here yet, which is why we likewise pray “Your will be done” so that it might be. Today’s Readings: Daniel 7:13–14; Psalm 93:1–2, 5; Revelation 1:5–8; John 18:33b–37

Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, Rey del Universo

    ¿ERES O NO ERES?
