All hotels and restaurants report that they experienced the
best December / January season ever.
This was due to the combination of the COP 17 conference
which filled the city and outlying areas to capacity for the first
11 days of December, coupled with a bumper domestic leisure
season which kicked in on the 11th Dec.

Durban and Umhlanga beaches were a huge attraction.
Police visibility was excellent.
Zero incidents and Police had a zero tolerance on alcohol.
City services were very good.

REVENUE GENERATION
January was a fantastic month for Domestic leisure tourists, as Gauteng schools only started on the 17th January 2012.
We should ask the Education Dept to do this every year as it boosts hotels’ occupancy and creates more jobs.
Coastal hotels from Ballito to Margate experienced an extended season which only slowed down on the 15th Jan and tourists were still in the hotels until the 21st Jan.

The entire KZN Province recorded a combined Room
occupancy of 77,3% increase on last year’s 67,4%.
Average room rate growth was high with 30% growth from
R817.58 to R1,064.16

Umhlanga recorded the highest Room Occupancy (85,3%)
which was up on last year’s 75,9%.

Combined Room Occupancy for hotels in Durban and
surrounding areas achieved an average of 81,1% as
opposed to 2010 Occupancy of 68.5%.

Durban and surrounding areas achieved a revenue per
available room (revpar) growth of 63.4%.
Umhlanga achieved 48% revpar growth and KZN regional
hotels achieved a small 3% revpar growth.

Of huge significance is the positive economic impact of
this higher Occupancy and high Average Room Rate.
The growth in December hotel rooms revenue spend year-
on-year in the Province equated to R65,6 Million.
This is an increase of 49,2% on December 2010.

Province contribute monthly information on +6,000 rooms.
