Chairman’sForeword

Review of the Year 2015-2016

I am delighted to have beenappointed Chairman of the RoyalLiverpool Philharmonic duringthe 175th year of its founding in2015.

It is a very exciting time to bejoining the organisation, whichhas achieved so much under thestewardship of our out-goingChairman Lorraine Rogers, notleast, international acclaim forthe Orchestra’s music-makingunder the baton of VasilyPetrenko and the continuingdevelopment of an extensivelearning programme and therecent completion of the majorrefurbishment of our home,Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.

These achievements have comeabout through the hard work andtalent of many people; brilliantmusicians, staff, executive andfellow board members and withthe continuing support of ourfunders, donors, supporters andaudiences.

I would like to pay particularthanks to the Mayor of Liverpool,Joe Anderson OBE, LiverpoolCity Council and Arts CouncilEngland. Their commitment hasbeen both financial and is ademonstration of theirunderstanding and valuing ofLiverpool Philharmonic’s role inour city and as part of the UK’swider music and creativeindustries.

Such support has never been moreimportant. The success of recentyears has happened in the contextof a financial downturn which hascreated challenges for all of us.The costs of an organisation suchas this one, with a world classorchestra and as diverse a musicaloffer as any in the country, meansthat we will always require thesupport and help of funders, donors, sponsors and audienceswho value what we do.

Investec Wealth & Investmentand Liverpool John MooresUniversity are LiverpoolPhilharmonic’s PrincipalPartners. These partnerships areborne from relationships thatstretch back many years and are ademonstration of all threeorganisations’ deep commitmentto Liverpool.

As Vice Chancellor and ChiefExecutive of Liverpool JohnMoores University, I wasdelighted that our institution wasable to contribute to the 175thanniversary celebrations of theRoyal Liverpool Philharmonicand to recognise the remarkableachievements of a trueambassador of music and the cityof Liverpool by conferring ourhighest organisational honour, our Corporate Award at our

Graduation Ceremony in 2015.I have joined a great team at theRoyal Liverpool Philharmonic, with a strong and committedBoard and a dynamic andtalented community of musicians, senior management and staff.

Working with the team, I lookforward to making mycontribution to ensuring thecontinuing success of anorganisation that holds a uniqueplace in Liverpool’s heart andcontributes so much to itsmusical and cultural life.

Review of the Year 2015-2016

During our 2014/15 and 2015/16concert seasons, the RoyalLiverpool Philharmonic has beencelebrating 175 years of musicmaking. Those music lovers whocame together in January 1840 toform the Liverpool PhilharmonicSociety cannot have imaginedthat they were laying thefoundations for the organisationwe know today; one with one ofthe UK’s greatest orchestras, anda music and learning programmethat reaches right into thecommunities of Liverpool andbeyond.

At the centre of our celebrationshas been the redevelopment ofLiverpool Philharmonic Hall, with a £14.5m investment bothinto the historic fabric of the Hall, and into a new extension at therear of the original building. Thishas been a major undertaking, and an investment into ensuringthat our beautiful Hall ischerished and provides the kindof facilities we need for thedecades ahead.

We closed the Hall for five and ahalf months between May andNovember 2014, though we stilldelivered an extensive artistic andlearning programme and haveachieved remarkable audiencesfor our concerts and otheractivity. We were determined thatdespite the building works wewould maintain our artisticambition and quality right acrossevery area of our work. I hopethat this review of our 175thanniversary gives some flavour ofhow we have been able to do this.

The support of many people hasbeen critical. Our major fundersArts Council England andLiverpool City Council havecontinued to show great faith inus by supporting both our corework and the Hall redevelopment. We are grateful to our PrincipalPartners, Investec Wealth &Investment and Liverpool JohnMoores University for theirsustained support. Classic FM,our media partner since 2001,extended our partnership for afurther five years to 2020, andbroadcast weekly programmes oflive and recorded performancesby the Orchestra and Choirthroughout 2015.

A number of trusts andfoundations and private donorshave been extremely generouswith support for our Hallredevelopment, for our concertand learning programmes, andour work in reaching newaudiences. And we are incrediblyfortunate in having such greatsupport.

It has been a busy andchallenging year and I would liketo thank everyone in the companyfor the incredible work anddedication they have shownthroughout. Whether performingonstage, working in learningsettings, or working behind thescenes, our team of great peoplehave worked incredibly hard andwith great professionalism.

I am grateful also to the Board fortheir commitment and expertisewhich has been invaluable asever. In particular I would like tothank Lorraine Rogers, whostepped down as Chairman at ourAGM in November 2015 at theend of her second term, for hersupport, and her stewardship ofnine remarkable years in thehistory of LiverpoolPhilharmonic.

Welcome to Professor NigelWeatherill, Vice Chancellor andChief Executive of Liverpool JohnMoores University who succeedsLorraine as Chairman for aninitial three-year term.

The performance in the sameconcert of Tchaikovsky’sSymphony No.5marked the startof our celebration of the greatRussian composer’s music, born175 years ago in 1840, the sameyear that Liverpool Philharmonicwas founded. Over the 2014/15and 2015/16 concert seasons, theOrchestra has explored some ofthe composer’s greatest and mostpopular works, with VasilyPetrenko conducting all six of thecomposer’s symphonies.

Marking other important musicalanniversaries, Thomas Dausgaardconducted the Orchestra inSibelius’s last three symphonies,Nos. 5, 6 and 7 during the 150thanniversary of the composer’s birth.

‘The founder members of the Liverpool PhilharmonicSociety, formed 175 years ago, would have beenstaggered to discover the wonders that grew from theirinaugural concert held in Mr Lassell’s Saloon, a roomchiefly used for dancing lessons. The currentPhilharmonic Hall would be startling enough. But thebiggest shock would certainly be the splendour andsize of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, an orchestrataken to the peak of perfection under Vasily Petrenko, its principal conductor. This celebration concertshowed us a world-class band testing its mettle onBeethoven’s Ninth. It was difficult to know what toadmire more: the orchestra’s sheen, its warmth, itspower, or the electrifying precision of attack.’

Liverpool-born pianist Paul Lewisis one of the world’s greatestliving virtuosos. In May 2015,audiences enjoyed his gloriousaccount of Brahms’s PianoConcerto No.1 before his plannedresidency was unfortunatelydisrupted through injury.

‘… this week marks the12th time in as manyyears that the keyboardvirtuoso has revisited thehall, not as an audiencemember but as a soloistplaying with the band heused to watch as a child.’

Palermo-born composer andcellist Giovanni Sollima returnedto Liverpool following histhrilling performances in 2012.He performed some of his owncompositions alongside fellowcellist (and regular collaborator)Monika Leskovar and with theOrchestra’s Principal Cello,Jonathan Aasgaard and broughtItalian panache to Tchaikovsky’sRococo Variations for cello andorchestra.

Julian Rachlin is one of the mostexciting and respected violinists ofour time. During his residency, heperformed as conductor, soloistand chamber musician in adiverse set of programmes whichshowcased his many talentsincluding as soloist with theOrchestra in Shostakovich’s ViolinConcerto No.1 and Tchaikovsky’sViolin Concerto; he performed asboth violinist and conductor withthe Orchestra in a concert of musicby Mozart and Mendelssohn;played both violin and viola withfive musicians of the the Orchestrain Brahm’s Sextet and Quintet;and conducted the Orchestra intheir mutual debuts at BuxtonOpera House.

Nathalie Stutzmann firstperformed with the Orchestra inJanuary 2015 conductingLiverpool Philharmonic’s annualperformance of Handel’sMessiah. Returning as Artist inResidence in early 2016, illnesssadly prevented Liverpoolenjoying her performance inrecital of Schubert’s Winterreise. However her return to Liverpoolin Spring 2016 to conduct Bach’sSt. Matthew Passion is highlyanticipated.

Mercury Prize-nominated folkduo, The Unthanks, i.e. sistersRachel and Becky Unthank, withpianist Adrian McNallyperformed with the Orchestraconducted by Charles Hazlewoodin a concert that included theworld premiere of some newarrangements as part ofLiverpool Philharmonic 175thAnniversary Commissions series, alongside symphonic explorationsof their most popular and well-loved songs from their 10-yearcareer.

‘Merseyside has a proudcontribution to themaking of Messiah, asHandel passed throughChester en route to thework’s premiere in Dublinin 1742. Yet with aperformance history thatstretches back over 150years, Liverpool’s annualMessiah is one of thelongest-established inthe country.’

Review of the Year 2015-2016

Vasily is also Chief Conductor ofthe Oslo Philharmonic Orchestraand Principal Guest Conductor ofthe Mikhailovsky Theatre in StPetersburg in Russia, his nativecity, and where his professionalcareer began in the mid-1990s. InSeptember 2015, he took up thebaton as Chief Conductor of theEuropean Union YouthOrchestra, succeeding VladimirAshkenazy.

Our Chief Conductor’s dynamicmusical partnership with theRoyal Liverpool PhilharmonicOrchestra, now in its tenth year, continues as a golden era in our175 year history, in the concert halland in broadcasts and recordings.

During our 175th anniversary,Vasily’s concerts with theOrchestra in Liverpool, across theUK and internationally – he ledthe Orchestra on tour in China,Japan (an inaugural tour), theCzech Republic and Romania -benefit both LiverpoolPhilharmonic and our city, as dohis high profile positions andengagements with otherinternational orchestras.

‘Other Russian conductors have given us valuableperspectives on Elgar: Yevgeny Svetlanov and GennadyRozhdestvensky in particular. But this is more thanthat. A sense of the long, fluid, intensely (but neverexaggeratedly) expressive line ... rich in mood andcharacter, strong in overall conception ... The lastingimpression is of a conductor with an intelligent, informed but deep love of this music.’April 2015 review of the recording of Petrenko and the Royal LiverpoolPhilharmonic Orchestra’s recording of Elgar’s Symphony No.1 andCockaigne Overture (ONYX)

Two new reports produced byevaluation consultant Dr SusanneBurns and University ofLiverpool’s Professor JudeRobinson in 2016 revealed thepositive impacts of In HarmonyLiverpool on children, theirfamilies and the widercommunity.

The Burns and Robinson reportsreveal that In HarmonyLiverpool has played a prominentrole in children’s educationalachievement, both throughmusical skills development andperformance, and in otheracademic subjects such as Mathsand English, in their wellbeing, particularly aspiration andresilience, as well as their sense ofbelonging and pride in theircommunity.
