The Way of the Cross

lsquoWhoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily

and follow Mersquo (Luke 9 23)

These words of Jesus are spoken at a turning point in the gospel Jesus

challenges the disciples about His identity and their commitment to Him lsquowho

do the crowds say I amrsquo (18) It is at this point that He lsquoresolutely set out for

Jerusalemrsquo (951) On our journey through Lent as we look to events of Good

Friday and Easter what are our priorities as Jesusrsquo disciples to be

To deny ourselves this means to saying No to ourselves and Yes to God as we

humbly submit our will to His Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane lsquonot

My will but Yours be donersquo (Luke 2242) It means putting Jesus first in everything

our work family ambitions possessions marriage finance and future We will

not be guided by self-interest but by allowing God to show us how to live in

His way

To take up our cross this reminds us that the disciple is not immune from

suffering as we follow Jesus along the way of cross Just as He carried His cross

to Golgotha we cannot avoid experiencing suffering in a fallen world Every day

we are to live in way that demonstrates to everyone that we have died to

ourselves our selfish ways and ambitions and seek to live for God It means

breaking old selfish habits and ways of thinking as we allow God to renew us by

His Spirit

In all of this we cannot lose because like Jesus it is only through death that we

find Godrsquos new life lsquoHe is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which

he cannot losersquo (Jim Elliot)

You may be wondering how we can reconcile the dark lead-up to Easter with

the dedicated cheeriness of Disney (Mary Poppins Returns) Are we taking Lent

sufficiently seriously if we approach it through a Disney lens After all the

events which bring us to Easter are utterly appalling Every year we watch

Christ pursue His lonely unflinching campaign of Love as evil elements within

his own society (and among his own followers) betray deny and kill him Its not

Disney Disneys intent at all times is to offer a spoonful of sugar and the

Bibles intent is never ever that Healing to humankind offered by the Easter

story can and must never go down in a delightful way Good Friday must be

borne unsweetened and Easter arrive un-gilded

3

But the film promises much It hints even in the opening song at hope and

deliverance through faith I believe we are here to explore whether it delivers

that storyline Walt Disney (whose ideals the Disney Corporation aim still to

uphold) said two things which may at least reassure us of the films intentions

He said

I always like to look on the optimistic side of life but I am realistic enough to know

that life is a complex matter and

We have created characters and animated them in the dimension of depth revealing

through them to our perturbed world that the things we have in common far

outnumber and outweigh those that divide us

Mary Poppins Returns is a far more complex film than first appears and hugely

more complex than the original Mary Poppins film It does indeed portray a

perturbed world It will be up to you to decide whether the film says precisely

what was intended But dig here and you will not be disappointed I hope our

excavations in our Lent Course give us a rich meaningful way towards Easter -

and the joy and the work beyond

What Psalm 23 is really all about

The Lord is my Shepherd - THATS RELATIONSHIP

I shall not be in want - THATS SUPPLY

He makes me lie down in green pastures - THATS REST

He leads me beside still waters - THATS REFRESHMENT

He revives my soul - THATS HEALING

He guides me along the right pathways - THATS GUIDANCE

For his namersquos sake - THATS PURPOSE

Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death - THATS TESTING

I shall fear no evil - THATS PROTECTION

For you are with me - THATS FAITHFULNESS

Your rod and your staff they comfort me - THATS DISCIPLINE

You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me -

THATS HOPE

You have anointed my head with oil - THATS CONSECRATION

My cup is running over - THATS ABUNDANCE

Surely your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life -

THATS BLESSING

And I will dwell in the house of the Lord - THATS SECURITY

For ever - THATS ETERNITY

Letrsquos Discuss Fr Hugo

Many of you will know that Irsquod like to start up a discussion group at St

Jamesrsquo And many of you seem to think itrsquos a good idea too as over twenty

came to a meeting on a recent Saturday morning to eat some croissants

drink some coffee and chew over what we might do who might do it and

when we might do it We had a good discussion from which came a

number of things middot We should have two groups one to meet in the day and one in the

evening to cater for people who are free in the day and those who

work respectively although anyone would of course be welcome

to come to one or both

middot The daytime group could meet at church after coffee following the

Wednesday morning mass The other group might meet in

someonersquos house

middot How frequently the groups meet could vary but it might be best to

meet once a month

middot Meeting monthly would help each group gain an identity This

would then be likely to lead to ideas for subjects to discuss Irsquove

already had some great suggestions including faith responses to the

climate emergency and looking at why the church is laid out as it is

and why we do what we do in the liturgy

middot For the first meetings at least Father Hugo will suggest and lead a

topic for discussion

middot While we hope these groups will be attractive to existing members

of the congregation we hope too that people who are interested in

faith issues but might not want to come to one of our regular

services might like to come too We should all think about inviting

someone along

middot We need a name Thoughts included something to do with shells

(the symbol of St James) and the Seekers which was the name of a

similar group a few years ago What else

Following a suggestion at the meeting Irsquove left a suggestions box on the

table by the entrance to the church Please feel free to write down your

ideas thoughts and inspirations and put them in it Thinking caps on

The courage of Oscar Romero

An Archbishop was presiding at Mass when a hired gunman shot him in the

back That was 40 years ago this month Archbishop Oscar Romero was

the Roman Catholic primate of San Salvador the capital of El Salvador a

small populous country in South America with a history of political

intrigue violence and corruption

The assassin a professional hitman who has never been caught was

working for an extreme right-wing junta and its supporters who felt

threatened by Romerorsquos sermons and his hugely popular radio broadcasts

Oscar Romero was not a natural agitator The emphasis of his ministry

had been on personal holiness and he had been slow to draw attention to

the unscrupulousness which pervaded his country but when a socially

active priest-friend was murdered he felt he had to follow the same

path He highlighted the torture of prisoners the censorship of the press

closure of schools and the plight of the poor

In 1980 he criticised the United States for their support of the junta In a

sermon on 23rd March 1980 he ordered the army to stop killing people ldquoIn

the name of God and in the name of this suffering people whose cries rise

to heaven more loudly each day I beg you I implore you I order you in

the name of God stop the repressionrdquo That was his death warrant

The next evening at Mass in a hospital chapel Romero had finished his

sermon and moved to the altar when a car stopped outside the open door

A gunman got out aimed his rifle and fired Romero died instantly He had

said As a Christian I do not believe in death without resurrection If they

kill me I shall arise in the Salvadoran people

Oscar Romero is commemorated as one of 10 Christian martyrs whose

statues adorn the West front of Westminster Abbey The day of his

martyrdom 30th March is remembered annually in the Anglican Lectionary

and by the United Nations because of its significance for human rights In

1997 the Roman Catholic Church made him a Saint

Did Oscar Romero mix religion with politics He said ldquoI want to reaffirm

that my sermons are not political Naturally they touch on politics and

they touch on the reality of the people but their aim is to shed light and to

tell you what it is that God wantsrdquo

High Days amp Holy Days

7 March - Perpetua and Felicitas joyful martyrs of Africa

This story could come straight out of modern Africa Perpetua was a young

married woman of 22 who had recently become a Christian But the

authorities had forbidden any new conversions and soon she and some other

catechumens were arrested and sentenced to death This was not under

Islamic State nor Boko Haram but under the emperor Septimius Severus in

Carthage in the year 203

Imprisoned with Perpetua was a pregnant slave Felicitas and seven men

Perpetuarsquos family were frantic with worry for her so she sent a message to

reassure them ldquoMy prison became a palace for me and I would rather have

been there than anywhere elserdquo As the days passed Perpetua devoted herself

to prayer and experienced various visions depicting the spiritual battle

storming around her

Soon Felicitas gave birth to a girl in the prison and she and Perpetua enjoyed

a last agape meal together On the day of the Games they left the prison for

the amphitheatre lsquojoyfully as though they were on their way to heavenrsquo

Perpetua sang a hymn of praise as animals were prepared for killing the

prisoners leopards and bears for the men and a maddened heifer for the

women The heifer did not succeed in killing them and after the young

women exchanged one final kiss of peace Perpetua herself guided the

gladiatorrsquos knife to her throat ldquoIt was as though so great a womanhellipcould not

be despatched unless she herself were willingrdquo

Perpetua and Felicitasrsquos joyful witness and unflinching courage went on to

inspire many other early Christian martyrs Down the centuries the feast day

of Perpetua and Felicitas became widely observed In 1907 an inscription in

their honour was discovered at Carthage in the Basilica where they had been

buried centuries before Their memory still lives on eight episodes of

Perpetuarsquos life are represented on a 14th century altar frontal at Barcelona

8 March - Felix of Burgundy apostle to East Anglia

East Anglia is blessed with a rich Christian heritage Just two examples at

more than 650 Norfolk has the greatest concentration of ancient churches in

the world and at 500 Suffolk has the second greatest density of medieval

13

churches And that is not to mention all the churches in Cambridgeshire

Essex Bedfordshire and Hertfordshirehellip

And it all began with one man back in 630 AD a bishop named Felix His

name in Latin means lsquosuccessfulrsquo and lsquohappyrsquo ndash an excellent description of

someone who brought great good and stability to this beautiful corner of

England

Felix came from Burgundy in France At some point he was consecrated

bishop and went to Canterbury to see Honorius the Archbishop of

Canterbury In 630 the Christian king Sigebert returned from exile in Gaul

to rule the East Angles and Honorius sent Felix along with him to evangelise

the people According to local legend Felix went by boat and arrived at

Bablingley in Norfolk

Felix may well have known Sigebert back in Gaul for the two men worked

exceptionally well together Sigebert settled Felix in Dunwich which became

the centre of his diocesan lsquoseersquo Then with the support of Sigebert Felix set

up the first-ever school in East Anglia He brought teachers up from

Canterbury to staff it and the school became according to Bede the place

ldquowhere boys could be taught letters

Felix had a fruitful ministry to the Anglo Saxons for 17 years He preached

Christianity encouraged the school to grow and did a lot of other good All

in all Felix brought the love of God the good news of Jesus and the comfort

of the Holy Spirit delivering all the province of East Anglia from long-

standing unrighteousness and unhappiness according to Bede Certainly

the people came to love Felix When Felix finally died on 8th March 647 or

648 he left the Christian faith firmly embedded in East Anglia Six ancient

English churches are dedicated to Felix and Felixstowe bears his patronage

30 March - John Climacus and his ladder to Paradise

Is there something down at say BampQ which reminds your friends of you

John Climacus (d 649) had a thing about ladders He was a monk in Palestine

who was only seen out at the weekends (at church not BampQ) during the

week he prayed and wrote in solitude He wrote The Ladder to Paradise a

treatise of spiritual encouragement to other monks This gave him his name

lsquoClimacusrsquo (= ladder) and also led to him being chosen as abbot of Sinai when

he was 70 John Climacus had a helpful picture of the spiritual life he saw it

as a ladder up which the believer slowly climbed to heaven with Godrsquos help

John Climacus (d 649) had a thing about ladders He was a monk in Palestine

who was only seen out at the weekends (at church not BampQ) during the

week he prayed and wrote in solitude He wrote The Ladder to Paradise a

treatise of spiritual encouragement to other monks This gave him his name

lsquoClimacusrsquo (= ladder) and also led to him being chosen as abbot of Sinai when

he was 70 John Climacus had a helpful picture of the spiritual life he saw it

as a ladder up which the believer slowly climbed to heaven with Godrsquos help

churches And that is not to mention all the churches in Cambridgeshire

Parochial Church Council meeting

The Milton Review now has a new feature a summary of the minutes of the

PCC after each meeting This will enable more people in the church family

and the wider community to know about what wersquore up to and what wersquore

planning

At our most recent meeting on 18th November we noted and discussed

minus The regular work being done to the Church grounds by students from

Highbury College Wersquore very grateful and itrsquos making a big difference

minus Progress on raising funds to fix the roof The sale of the Parishrsquos house

on Priory Crescent is proceeding and wersquore investigating grants But

raising the amount of money we need will need a big push from as many

people as possible

minus Our parish share to the Diocese is up 34 but planned giving is down

minus Following a request from the Deanery wersquove agreed to donate money to

the Youth Chaplaincy which works with vulnerable children and adults

We also varied the charities we support as a parish we are now

supporting Friends without Borders supporting asylum seekers and

refugees including some within the parish We decided to support the

Roberts Centre in kind with regular donations of food etc

minus Father Paul has been priest in charge of St Jamesrsquo since he came The

Bishop has agreed that he will now be our vicar subject to consultation

Father Paul has also been appointed Assistant Area Dean

minus Choir Church activities are proceeding apace with a Christmas

Singalong at Fratton Park [This was very successful and attracted

several hundred people and two Pompey players The children of Meon

Juniors and Milton Park excelled themselves as did the brass band from

Portsmouth Grammar School]

minus We agreed to support the Rainbow Centre from our Christmas

collections [in the event we raised around pound1200]
