These last two months, as you will see in the extensive display of photos in this edition, were very intense. We started with PHA Week that had activities every single day finishing with a big party at Palmanova Plaza under the rain! It was a fun week full of activities and camaraderie. During this past month we also had the traditional Chiringada of Villa Franca, the Davis Cup tennis tournament which had big coverage and attendance, the International Grand Slam at our Palmas Yacht Club, also a weekend full of activities and fun time. Closing this “high activity” period we also had the exquisite Festival de La Buena Vida, this year in honor of Baccus. There were also a couple of important weddings, Cristina Bajandas, daughter of Amed and Rose Bajandas and Suzette Maldonado, daughter of our Executive Director, Tony Maldonado. Both weddings were very beautiful. No doubt, Palmas is a Wedding paradise (among others things). In this edition, you will also find full coverage of our spectacular Palmas Academy school life and achievements. Impressive! Besides learning about the new riding school at the Candelero Ranch I recommend not missing the show they are putting together on Fridays: Dressage and Show Jumping.

And now...the summer just started, one of the most beautiful seasons of the year! I turn on my vacation mode (even if I am working) you see kids everywhere having fun in many of the activities and summer camps available at Palmas.

Have a wonderful summer! s

Another beautiful wedding took place at our exquisite Palmas Yacht Club. This time it was the beloved daughter of our PHA Executive Director, Mr. Antonio

(Tony) Maldonado, Suzette Marie Maldo-nado (Suzy) y Mark Cassidy, the groom. A group of friends and family members from all over the States enjoyed a wonderful afternoon with the bride and groom. One of the most emotional moments was when Tony him-self sung Mi niña Bonita to his young-est daughter accom-panied by a group of

Mariachis. There is so much tal-ent here in Palmas! s

Recently, Jackie Rodríguez, our Mas-ter Trainer and PAC Fitness Director, was invited to participate at the FIBO convention (International Trade Show for Fitness, Wellness & Health) at Essen Germany. She was so nervous! “Imag-ine I will have to perform in front of hundreds of people that are part of the fitness and wellness world,” Jackie re-peated many times before her trip. Every time I would tell her: “Don’t worry, you are going to kill them with all your en-ergy and Latin rhythm!”

But... I understand her apprehension because FIBO is the largest world trades show for fitness, wellness and health with traffic of more than 65,000 people. Top exhibitors and presenters around the world exhibit and present their new exercise machines and techniques. “Tobias Rudolf, VP Marketing Director and sales Manager for Flexi Sports, had told me it was going to be very big but I thought he was exaggerating. He was not. It was huge! It took you a day and a half to see all the exhibitions. Every-thing was so big! The exhibitions, the stages for the performance, everything!” she said and added there is no way to describe it.

Jackie was invited by Flexi-Sports, Germany to perform at FIBO with the best XCO and Flexi Bar instructor of the world. “This little Puerto Rican lady there among those younger trainers from all over the world (South Korea, Serbia, Czech Republic, Poland, Slo-venia, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Brazil, Canada, Ukraine and USA, among oth-ers).” And what they didn’t know is that

Jackie has talent!... and Germany acknowledged it.

she is a mother of five!“It was a beautiful experience, meet-

ing professionals from all over the World, and the owners of Flexi Sport, Frank and Barbara Klein who made us feel like family. They were so giving. For example, each one of our outfits was en-graved with our name and our country. I was really moved when I saw my shirt with my name and the flag of Puerto Rico and my master trainer distinction in the back, because not everyone got one!!! I though...’my dream came true after 45!!!”

And then... The performanceIt was Friday morning and her nerves

were on high! That was the first day all the Master Trainers were going to the main stage for a demonstration. “Aren’t we are going to practice a routine?” she asked. The answer was a solid “NO!” “If you are a good instructor you will follow Andy and Barbara,” she was told. Andy Sasse is the creator and co-founder of Flexi Sports and Barbara Klein is the de-veloper of the Flexi-Bar and a world-re-nowned fitness instructor, physiothera-pist and television fitness presenter from Munich, Germany. She didn’t have a choice but to jump into the stage and do her best which she did, because without her knowing it, they were being taped in order to evaluate them later one. The results...you can tell. She was selected to become part of the Flexi Sport Interna-tional Team! She then was selected to perform with Andy and a small group. “At the beginning I froze but then I saw the people looking at me and tak-ing photos. I was moved,” she said and I could see her and see the people with their mouth open seeing her jump and dance with such a rhythm and energy. That same night she received two news: she was going to record a video (that will be recorded at Palmas) XCO Car-dio Latin Explosion and she will be the Spokesperson of the Hispanic Market for PR and Central America. And she was afraid!!

While being there she was invited to

Munich to assist a Functional Training course by Performance Sport, a sub-division of Flexi-Sports. “This company deals with the science behind Flexi-Sports products,” explained Jackie. This will be a separate topic for our next issue. For now we only have to con-gratulate her and be proud of her perfor-mance in Germany. She is amazing and I give faith of how good she is. Bravo, bravisimo!! s

We recently transferred our home and car insurance policies to Palmas Insurance (in November 2011). This was prompted by our permanent move to Palmas in 2010 and by the good reputation on products and services that Palmas Insurance has. In the short timeframe that we have been with Palmas Insurance we already had the opportunity to challenge the level of service and quality of their offerings. We submitted a claim for a hit-and-run in our car and also had the need for road service in a separate instance. The promptness and quality of the service received was very good and met or exceeded our expectations. Both Palmas Insurance and the provider company used showed to be very responsible and concerned about their clients. The people at Palmas Insurance are also very customer oriented and we are glad to have them as our insurance providers.

Thanks very much, Amaryllis Alsina & José A. Pagán Lajara

PRESIDENT THE

Summer is here. It

is a wonderful time of

the year for much fun,

travel, family adventure

and festivities. It is also

the hurricane season and

you should be getting

ready with your house-

hold contingency plan

to meet any possible

threats of this nature. Pull out your prepa-

ration checklist, go over your inventory

of critical items you may need during an

emergency and identify and prepare your

safe haven. As in years past, in the event

of a hurricane emergency, PHA will take

the lead in preparing the community and

handling the situation during and after the

event. This includes taking all the prepara-

tion steps, recovery actions and safety and

security measures. This is done for your

security and safety as well as the protection

of your property.

This summer we can anticipate a beehive

of activity within our community as friends

and visitors flock our paradise community,

our beach areas and the many great ameni-

ties Palmas del Mar has to offer. Also, it is a

time to be in particular alert. Just remember

that Palmas is ours and is up to us property

owners to protect it and take good care of it.

This includes being vigilant to keep intrud-

ers out of areas they do not belong, reporting

any unruliness, mischievous behavior, any

property damage such as graffiti, golf cart

violations and observing beach safety.

Have a safe and fun-filled summer!

Olivia Thurman-Rivera, an 8th grader at the Palmas Academy, represented the Latin America / Caribbean region at the recent VFW Patriots Pen Essay Competi-tion held in Washington, DC. Olivia was one of the 54 finalists whose essays are chosen from a field of more than 120,000 entries in this student competition spon-sored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) of the United States open to students 6th through 8th grade. In the final competition Olivia placed number 22 among the 54 finalists and was awarded recognition certificates and a $1000 saving bond for her outstanding patriotic essay titled “Are You Proud of Your Country”. The announcement and awards were presented by retired General Antonio Maldonado, VFW Programs Chairman for the region.

Also, two Palmas Academy teachers, Maritere Cardona and Veronica Ri-vera, were recognized with the VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award for their role in promoting civic responsibility, patriotism, and Ameri-can history traditions, ideals and institutions. Veronica coordinates the Academy’s Patriots Pen student participation program while Maritere coor-dinates the students participation in the Voice of Democracy Program. The Voice of Democracy is a scholarship program sponsored by the VFW open to students 9th through 12th grade where finalist compete for awards up to $30,000. In the past the Palmas Academy Students have done exceedingly well in this scholarship competition which also includes trips to Washington DC and to youth leadership camps in Valley Forge.

Each day more and more community members are joining the PHA project to restore the Palmas Forest and its boardwalk and to build a passive park at its entrance. The restoration and preservation of this gift from Mother Nature is the most important legacy we can leave behind for generations to come. The permit process with the Corps of Engineers is underway and as soon as the permit is received we will be installing the first 500 feet of the boardwalk (total approximately 2500 feet). The materials to be used are a fiberglass/aluminum composite extremely durable and very easy to maintain.

Please join our neighbors and friends who have already stepped forward to be counted in this noble and mag-nificent effort. Send or call (787) 285-6425 with your contribution to the PHA Forest Fund by check or credit card.

Full Participation at PHA General Annual Meeting

PHA held its Annual General As-sembly on April 14, 2012. The As-sembly was the height of a Home-owners Week filled with activities for all Palmas del Mar property own-ers. The event was well attended by the Delegates representing the re-gimes or residential areas of Palmas and individual members of the As-sociation. Attendees had the oppor-tunity to listen in detail about the operations, programs, finances and achievements of the organization this past year and to ask questions, present ideas and discuss general matters with the Board of the As-sociation.

Among the highlights of the An-nual Meeting was the presentation of the John Wallace Community Service Award to Daniel Vasse, the seating of Kike Cortés (Marbella) and Kukito Muñiz (Business Dis-trict) as new members of the Board and the recognition of outstand-ing leaders Carlos Colón, Sonny Rodriguez and Mario Emanuelli for their significant contributions to the Association and to the Palmas del Mar Community. The PHA Board also gave special recognition to de-parting Board members Julio Bagué and Daniel Vasse who completed their terms of service at the Board.

Daniel Vasse receives John Wallace Community Service Award...well deserved!

“John Wallace represented the true meaning of community service and if he were here today he would stand tall and salute our selectee and honor him along with us. It is my honor and privilege to announce the 2012 John Wallace Award Winner: Daniel Vasse,” announced Antonio (Tony) Maldonado, PHA Executive Director. The applause was unanimous and a well-deserved standing ovation followed Tony’s announcement. Other previous award winners Gabriel Espasas, Ivonne Cruz and Luis Lomba were at hand for the announcement and presentation.

Daniel has set an incredible path of accomplishments through his involvement inside and outside of the Palmas community that sets him apart from our population. His dedication toward making Palmas a better place for its residents and an unforgettable experience for visitors is exactly the model for which the John Wallace Award was instituted. To put his accomplishments in the John Wallace Award perspective, in addition to serving in the PHA Board for 14 years, Daniel has been the prime mover among this community for the Buena Vida Festival that has brought much luster to Palmas del Mar but more importantly, it has helped many people in need, through the significant contribution of this event to community based organizations. Daniel has generously given his time, skills and resources to this cause expecting nothing in return.

Daniel is also responsible for organizing and structuring the Palmas del Mar Business Association under the PHA governance and has served as his President for many years. He has been a member of the PHA Security Committee for more than 14 years, a PHA Delegate for 15 years and has been involved in every issue, committee or project that the PHA Board has asked for his help, such as the group that worked the transfer of the Palmas amenities to the PAC and many others or in organizing for PHA activities such as the great “Meet the Chefs” event held this past Thursday night to raise funds for the Forest.

He does all this without skipping a beat in spite of his professional, personal and business commitments.

Daniel’s accomplishments on behalf of the Palmas community are too many to enumerate here, but it is enough to say that Daniel works an incredible number of hours outside of his regular job to insure success in everything he does. He is an extraordinary human being and a true friend of Palmas del Mar. He is indeed deserving of the John Wallace Award.

the Davis cup team tennis match of the Group ii americas playoffs between puerto Rico and Bolivia has great significance. the winner maintains its playoff status in Group ii. the loser drops to Group iii in the americas. Davis cup teams around the world which also include Europe/africa and asia/oceania compete for the same goal, to compete in the world Group. this year in the world Group on september 14-16, the stage is set for the semi-finals. spain vs. Usa and czech Republic vs. argentina.

puerto Rico Davis cup team took one step closer to the world Group by defeating Bolivia 3-1. this victory keeps them in the playoffs in Group ii with an opportunity to move up to Group i.

the setting on holy weekend for the encounter between the two teams could have not been any better. the weather was beautiful and puerto Rico had great tennis fan support. the stadium court at the palmas athletic club tennis center has to be one of the best stadiums in the world to play a tennis match. the first day matches on Good Friday featured 2 singles. Four-time puerto Rico champion and pepperdine University senior alex llompart started the Davis cup competition by cruising past the tall and talented lefty Bolivian player mauricio Doria medina 6-3,6-2,6-4. thirty minutes after the first match. 19 year old hugo Delliem, Bolivia’s future star and atp player, 2011 itF world Rank-ing no. 2 Boy’s 18, took control of the match early to defeat puerto Rico Ricardo Gonzales 6-2,6-2,3-6,7-6(1). on saturday, the only match of the day was the doubles. puerto Rico duo of alex llompart and Ricardo Gonzales mastered the doubles court by a score of 6-3,3-6,6-4,6-3 over the Bolivians Federico Zeballos and mauricio Doria medina. on the final day sunday, the reverse singles. the highly anticipated match between alex llompart and hugo Delliem was played under a scorch-ing sun. Rally’s were long and exciting, emotions were high, players were arguing over close calls. the chair umpires had their hands full. there is nothing like the experience of witnessing the passion of Davis cup matches that come from the fans. the high energy Bolivian star with his favorite expression after winning a big point “stretching out his right arm with an open palm pointing to his coach and yelling out siii” came to play. alex won the first set 6-3, he started to have leg cramps in the second set but prevailed 7-5. hugo pulled out the third 6-4, but the experience of alex quickly deflated the young star to win the final and deciding set and team match 6-0. the final match was not played because of the 3-1 win.

this Dynamic event at palmas Del mar’s palmas athletic club tennis center would not have been possible without a well-organized team of people. puerto Rico Davis cup coach Jorge Gonzales “Great Job by the pac team, i want to come back next year”. and Bolivia Davis cup coach mauricio solis ”palmas is the best”. Big hand of applause to the following: Juan Gracia, Gamaliel Rosado, Jose “pepito” Vasquez, marimer Del Valle and Volunteers, angel Diaz and Ball Boys and Girls, nector Robles and Ramon Figueroa and staff, patricia Emmanuelli and staff, chris pennock and sherry and staff, marcel Burger and staff, ptF teaching professionals. also itF Referee miguel ternera and his staff. pRta and humberto torres and staff. special thanks to tony maldonado and security for keeping the parking under control at the palmas athletic club tennis center.

Master reiki guruOnly from talking to her you feel relaxed

and in harmony. She definitely has a peace-ful energy and the best part is that she has the necessary tools to transmit that energy and spiritual alignment. “Every person is their own healer, I only provide you with the tools for you to accept the internal healer we all have within,” said Elsa Borges, now giv-ing her services at Beauty by Bouret. She explained that a Reiki massage is a recog-nized form of holistic healing that has been around for thousands of years. It uses the Universe’s energy to harmonize your body’s hemispheres and chakras (considered focal points for the reception and transmission of energies).

I have to confess that by the time she started with me I was already relaxed; just with the sound of her voice and energy. I laid on the massage table and something amazing happened to me. She was doing something with my head (without touching my head) and I felt a rush of energy going out of one of my feet. I could feel her energy and my stage of relaxation was absolute.

Then, she started to use digit-pressure techniques to unblock the energy. She worked hard on my trapezoids where I ac-cumulate most of my tensions. This tech-nique is based on the principles of Chinese acupuncture.

Another of the tools she used on me was the Colorpuncture a revolutionary evolution in holistic healing and one of Europe’s most popular new alternative healing disciplines. “The originator of Colorpuncture is a Ger-man scientist and naturopath named Peter Mandel who has conducted over 25 years of intensive empirical research to develop this unique system of healing,” she explained to me. Colorpuncture involves focusing colored light on acupuncture (and other) points on the skin in order to energize powerful healing impulses in our physical and energy bodies.

“Scientists are now discovering that light is actually the medium by which cells com-municate and it is at the very basis of many body functions. In a Colorpuncture treatment, frequencies of colored light are used to re-store communication amongst the cells. This treatment is ideal for Migraine conditions among others.

• Helps greatly with pain relief and management.• Removes energy blockages and helps with circulation of good energy and blood flow.• Helps protect and strengthen the immune system.• Increases one’s vitality and postpones the aging process.• Promotes spiritual growth and emotional clarity.• Speeds up the body’s healing properties.• Encourages better sleeping and breathing.• Assists in detoxifying and removal of waste and toxins.• Reduces high blood pressure.• Reduces side effects from drugs and medical treatment.

Reiki massage utilizes the uni-versal energy, the same energy that pervades and powers the Universe to heal and balance your body and soul where it is needed.

“Every person is their own healer, I only provide you

the tools for you to accept the

internal healer we all have within”.

Elsa strongly believes, and I agree, that most sicknesses are psychosomatic and they start with a sole thought that evolves in the sickness itself. And it is true. I remem-ber when my daughter was a little girl that she used to say that I didn’t care about her health because when she told me she was feeling sick I use to tell her: “You are going to be alright, just rest and drink a lot of wa-ter and it will go away”. In most cases it was true. Sometime, when she told me she had a stomach ache I would place a bandage on the stomach and some time later the pain would disappear magically. s

Academic, Emotional, and Physical Development

Twenty years ago, a group of parents with the support of a small group of teachers embarked on a new adventure; the creation of a school in Palmas del Mar. Many of those parents had the choice of continuing sending their children to other private schools in Humacao and the Metropolitan Area. However, they started building a school with a sheer determination and foremost, a clear shared vision.

These pioneers wanted a school grounded on an enduring sense of community, the pursuit of happiness, a strong curriculum, and progressive educational practices and outcomes. And there they went to incorporate the new school in 1992, charting new territories. This visionary group created a school community within the community of Palmas del Mar. Very soon the new school was able to transcend the physical boundaries of Palmas del Mar. It welcomed many families and their children from other communities outside of the Palmas del Mar area and the City of Humacao, providing the kind of diversity that would enrich even more the repertoire of educational experiences.

THE PALMAS ACADEMY...Excellence in Education

Through time and maturation a mission statement was developed that would reflect a clear vision; “To provide an excellent education in a safe, positive and supportive environment, that will foster scholarship, creativity, self-discipline, independent thinking, leadership and promote values for living in a culturally diverse world.” This vision clearly sup-ports the notion of an integrated education approach that will allow The Palmas Academy to develop students, who are excellent cognitively and academically, as well as physically and emotionally.

Today The Palmas Academy has become one of the finest non-denom-inational private schools in Puerto Rico as documented by accreditation agencies. It has earned a well-deserved prestige thanks to a rich history of educational innovation, its reputation as a college prep school, and the past and present success of the student body. s

Page 29: Revista LL Palmas - Junio - Julio 2012

T he Palmas Academy offers an academic program for students PK3 through 12th grade in two recently remodeled buildings with air conditioned classrooms, three modern biology, phys-ics, and chemistry laboratories, two well-equipped libraries;

one for the elementary school and one with group study rooms for the Middle School & High School, a learning center, and a multi-purpose conference room.

The educational program is supported by a committed and profes-sional faculty that provides excellent educational services that in turn increase the academic and emotional success of our students. The Palmas Academy offers an educational alternative for students that have been identified with special learning needs, The Learning Center (TLC). In the TLC, trained and licensed teachers will provide individual or small group instructions working hand in hand with regular teachers to ensure coordinated effort toward the best interest of the student.

Besides developing a solid academic foundation for the students, The Palmas Academy fosters emotional development as well. Emotional Development is when the children develop the capacity to experience, express, and interpret emotions. The fine arts program which includes Art, Drama and Music is the center in which this objective is accom-plished at the curricular level, while the extracurricular activities further help develop the emotional aspect of the students. For this purpose, the Academy has sponsored a diverse number of activities, some of them taking place within the school limits, while others are opened to the community at large. Among these activities, are the following: Spirit Week/Days, International Peace Day, Spanish Heritage Week, Road Safety Education, Driver’s Education Week, Drug Prevention/Red Ribbon Week, Puerto Rican Night Festival, French Week, Chess Tournament, Deletrea Conmigo, Spelling Bee, and Basketball, Volleyball, and Futsal Tournaments. s

Page 30: Revista LL Palmas - Junio - Julio 2012

In Drama, students are encour-aged to express themselves freely and artistically while developing their creativity, individual talents, and intrapersonal skills and dis-cipline. Through acting, direct-ing, producing, and partaking in adaptations of classic as well as modern day plays, the students acquire a various set of skills that will stay with them throughout their lives. The Drama department offers every student the oppor-tunity to shine in their preferred area of interest while integrating art, music, stage, costume and makeup design, bringing together our community through captivat-ing performances for all to enjoy.

We believe that teaching art is an essential part of educating a child. The arts unlock and open new pathways of learning to children. Research shows that art helps students develop proficiency in critical thinking and aesthetic judgment. Another compelling reason to teach the arts is literacy. Literacy in today’s world no longer means simply reading language of written prose. Today, literacy must be multisensory. Students must be able to make informed decisions in an environment teeming with sensory data. It also stimulates their intelligence and let them express their interior world.

The Palmas Academy Music Program starts as early as preschool and works its way up to high school, with its School Band. The School Band plays in all school sponsored activities, including school plays, graduations, community service activities and even holidays.

The opportunity to inspire students and open doors to a Global classroom gives us the opportunity to inspire and motivate our students to become worldwide citizens able to appreciate the diversity of various cultures and peoples with tolerance and open-mindedness. From the earliest civilizations such as Egypt, Rome, Peru and Greece to the avant-garde cities such as Berlin, Barcelona, Edinburg, Paris, London, New York and Prague, stu-dents experience firsthand culinary taste, architectural variants, art appreciation, theatre performances and a variety of priceless memories that inspire from inside the classroom out into the world.

In order to develop a well-rounded citizen, TPA believes in fostering in their students civic responsibility through a Community Service Program. For this reason, the Academy provides its stu-dents with opportunities to be of service to others in need. In this manner, they will be able to formulate an understand-ing of community, of empowerment, of empathy, and of brotherly love. All of which are fundamental in the develop-ment of a whole individual. Students in The Palmas Academy have visited el Instituto Psicopedagógico de Puerto Rico, Hogar Cuna San Cristóbal, Casa de Todos, Hospital Municipal de San Juan, Hogar Manuel Mediavilla. They’ve

helped Casa La Bondad and El Faro de Animales. They’ve participated in island-wide events, such as the Susan G. Komen 5k, and have spearheaded events, such as the Cabezas Rapadas in support of research for pediatric cancer, among others. Students also help tutoring in school and cleaning our environment by cleaning the beaches.

Community Service

In its continued effort to enhance the offerings to our students and provide all parents, especially those who work, with a convenient alternative after regular school hours, The Palmas Academy offers an Extended Day Program with over 20 fun activities to choose from until 6:00 p.m. All of these, in a safe environment as is The Pal-mas Academy in Palmas del Mar.

In the Palmas Academy, we want our students to grow up to be strong and healthy individuals. That is why we take sports seriously. Our Athletic Department offers students participation in two different age group leagues and for both genders. In the elementary level, fourth to sixth grade teams compete in the Central Oriental Private Schools Athletic Alliance (C.O.P.S.A.A.) in a variety of sports, including soccer, volleyball, cross country, softball, tennis, swimming, basketball and track & field. In the middle and upper levels, the teams compete in the Puerto Rico High Schools Athletic Alliance (P.R.H.S.A.A.) in volleyball, soccer, golf, tennis, swimming, basketball, futsal and bowling. Up to this date, they have won 4 championships in P.R.H.S.A.A. Division B and 20 C.O.P.S.A.A. League sports championships in different sports. Future plans for Athletics include the intramurals to provide competition to all our students without exclusion.

middle reader chapter books, illustrated children’s books, art books, cook books, a book on rug hooking and others, is delighted to be in Palmas. Cynthia Gallant-Simpson and her husband Ken Simpson (economist blogger and publishing partner) travelled to Puerto Rico in 2011 to do research for the third book in Liz Ogilvie-Smythe Provinc-etown Cozy Mysteries that takes place on the east coast of the island in such places as Luquillo and Fajardo. They toured the magnificent Caribbean coastline and fell in love! They lived on Cape Cod in an old sea captain’s house where they also had an art gallery featuring Cynthia’s Narrative Maritime Americana Primitive paintings. All the while Cynthia was painting, as her work was finding its way in private collections around the world and into art galleries, (one piece is in the permanent collection of the Tokyo, Japan National Art Gallery), she wrote when she was not painting. She designs her own book covers. Their first big step after selling their home, (the one that led their children to call them “homeless”) was to downsize to a forty-four foot trawler yacht. As they and other new INDIE authors (independent authors) in the burgeoning field of self-publishing will tell you, the struggle to be considered or even read by the big publishers just got to be too frustrating. Thanks to companies like Amazon that has brought self-publishing into the limelight making it easy and profitable to be an INDIE author/publisher, some terrifically talented writers are finally cornering the book market. Cynthia and Ken formed their company, Cape Cod Cozies & Mysteries, INK in 2010

and the rest is history. Cinthias’ books are available at Amazon and Kindle. They live on a thirty-six-foot sailboat on a mooring in Pleasant Bay on Cape Cod from June to October and then, since October 2012, they will be spending every winter at Palmas. They downsized from a twelve room sea captain’s house built in 1842, complete with three acres and a greenhouse (Cynthia will be bringing her green thumb to P.R. hoping to have pots of veggies and herbs on the patio) to their trawler that they took to North Carolina for two years. Missing sailing, they switched back to the thirty-six foot Orion sailboat they have called their summer cot-tage on Cape Cod for the past two years.

Thanks to Rita Mollnelli and her staff, they have found a temporary rental that will become the new winter home of mysteries yet to be “born.” Cynthia is thinking about creative writing courses perhaps for retirees and they are both hoping to meet up with friends with sailboats. They will leave the sailboat up north as their summer cot-tage and eventually have one in P.R. In the meantime, they will be available as willing and happy crew.

Welcome aboard! I will sing up for the creative writing courses myself!

The Palmas Academy has been competing in La Liga de Oratoria en Español de Puerto Rico since the 2008- 2009 school year. This Organiza-tion was created nearly 50 years ago with the purpose of developing the personal and intellectual lives of students who participate in it. The past competitors from our school, including myself, have grown in many aspects of their personal life. As a member of the club for 3 years now, I can honestly say that this year was the first in which we really achieved the success that we so strongly worked for. Although we have had good results in previous years, this occasion was nearly legendary. For many of the members, the process was extremely arduous. However, the experience of participating in this competition was one that has left a mark on students forever.

We started working on our pieces last semester. Our coaches were Mrs. María Lomba and Ms. Patricia Fortuño. With their help, we chose the pieces we would perform, we memorized them, and we started to incorporate

movement and actions into our interpretations. Some of us had speeches; others had monologues, others poetry, and some had to write their own pieces. The process, although very exhausting, was extremely entertaining as we all had to join every day to practice our pieces in order to achieve the great interpretations that our teachers expected.

It was hard to realize that the day had finally arrived. I remember feeling nervous, anxious, and excited all at the same time. We worked so hard that we were looking forward to that day like our life depended on it. When we got to Colegio San Jorge (the host school) early that morning, we were ready to compete. The hardest part about the competition was being separated from our friends; then, we were taken into rooms with people from other schools to perform for the judges. When one stands in front of those judges, the silent, yet vicious mood eats a fragment of your heart every second until you decide to begin and leave every single piece of your soul in that performance to

achieve the best result possible. Everybody wants to win, but to do it one must put every bit of hard work and determination into the acting and articulation to let everyone know one’s warrior nature. This process was done for two rounds before the final round, which is done for the top 8 students in each category of performances. For the first time in all the years participating, The Palmas Academy got 12 out of 13 students inside the final round.

The results arrived, and we had done a great job. As a school, we got second place, which meant we would move up from category E to category D. Most of the participants from our school got from 1st to 8th place in their corresponding category. As for myself, I got 1st place in the category of origi-nal. Overall, the competitors from TPA did an amazing job in the competition.

With this recent achievement, we are really looking forward to the coming years, and we hope to go all the way up to category A. Indeed, this competi-tion, although very challenging, helps one grow as an individual. s

Now is time to say goodbye....to our snowbirds

snow-bird:

By Lissette Rosado

During the month of March Palmas’ Ladies Community Club held a potluck Black and White dinner gathering at PHA to say “Adios” to the Wonderful Snowbirds. The event was well attended. Ray Gresalfi provided the music. Food was in abundance and everyone had a good time!

We miss our Snowbirds when they are not in resi-dence!

We hope time goes by fast to have you all back soon. It’s a good thing we have Live & Life in Palmas to keep those lines of communication open. You can also check out our Live and Life in Palmas on Facebook to see our latest post. s

The MAR Equestrian Team is comprised of Team Captain Mi-chelle Romero, a current member of the Puerto Rican Olym-pic Equestrian Team. The young team members include, in age order: Kathleen Fuentes-Romero (14) riding Barlovento (7); Sophie Uldry-Lavergne (12) riding Kissed by a Saint (5); Camille Vidal-Bouret (11) riding Das Kaiser (7) ; and Camille Uldry-Lavergne (11) riding Covert Affairs (10). Team parents are Dra. Lissette Bouret, Jeanine Lavergne, Víctor Ginorio and Andrés Romero. The team is training to participate in na-tional and international competitions spon-sored by the Puerto Rican Federation of Equestrian Sports (FPDE), and other com-petitions sponsored by Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI). To date, the team has travelled to competitions in Wellington and Ocala, Florida. This summer, Michelle Romero will travel to Luhmuhlen, Germany in order to train with the German Olympic Team in preparation for the 2014 Central American & Carib-bean Games in Veracruz, Mexico.

If you haven’t stopped by Hacienda Candelero recently you probably haven’t noticed the new addition to our fabulous equestrian facilities… it’s the new Palmas Riding School. The new Riding School will offer its students instruction and com-petitive event opportunities in the art and discipline of Eng-lish Riding. Included in the curriculum is dressage and show jumping, two equestrian disciplines requiring great coordina-tion between rider and horse. Instruction will be provided by Kellie Stobie, an experienced rider and trainer, and Michelle Romero, a FEI-certified trainer and a current member of the Puerto Rican Olympic Equestrian team. The school is located at Hacienda Candelero, just behind The Palmas Academy.

A special aspect of the Riding School is that family and friends of our riders have frequent opportunity to watch their progress at regularly scheduled “Friday Night Lights” at the adjacent Candelero Smokey House Restaurant. Students who wish to advance to a competitive level will have the opportu-nity to join the MAR Equestrian Team. Registration for Au-gust classes is now open. Instruction will be offered to adults and children older than 9, on an individual or group basis. The school provides horses, equipment and other gear (tack). Students are required to purchase personal protective gear, and riding attire. Other requirements include a medical clear-ance and insurance/indemnification agreements. The cost of instruction is dependent on the hours of instruction desired and available, as well as preference for group or individual in-struction.

Dressage is a French term, most commonly translated to mean “train-ing” and is a competitive equestrian sport, defined by the International Equestrian Federation as “the highest expression of horse training.”

Competitions are held at all levels from amateur to the World Equestrian Games. Its fundamental purpose is to develop, through standardized pro-gressive training methods, a horse’s natural ath-letic ability and willing-ness to perform, thereby maximizing its potential as a riding horse. At the peak of a dressage horse’s gymnastic development, the horse will respond smoothly to a skilled rid-er’s minimal aids. The rid-er will be relaxed and ap-pear effort-free while the horse willingly performs the requested movement. Dressage is occasionally referred to as “Horse Bal-let”. Although the disci-pline has ancient roots in Europe, dressage was first recognized as an impor-tant equestrian pursuit during the Renaissance. The great European rid-ing masters of that period developed a sequential training system that has changed little since then. Classical dressage is still considered the basis of modern dressage. s

Show jumping, also known as “stadium jumping,” “open jumping,” or “jumpers,” is a member of a family of English riding equestrian events that also includes dressage, event-ing, hunters, and equitation. Jumping classes are com-monly seen at horse shows throughout the world, in-cluding the Olympics. Some-times shows are limited exclu-sively to jumpers, sometimes jumper classes are offered in conjunction with other English-style events, and sometimes show jump-ing is but one divi-sion of very large, all-breed competitions that include a very

wide variety of disci-plines. Jumping classes may be governed by various national horse show sanctioning orga-

nizations, such as the United States Equestrian Federation in the USA. International competitions are governed by the rules of the International

Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI, from the

body’s French name of Fédération Équestre Internationale). s
