Hello Readers, Welcome to another issue of the

Servant’s Heart Magazine. While this issue has taken some time to produce, the topic is of utmost importance as we consider Revival this time around. Revival is a topic that Christians have

many varying views on, yet most of these revolve on some dreamy idea of years gone by. We look at the Revivals of yesteryear and think, “How amazing it would have been to live in those days.” But we fail to acknowledge that revival can come again! Revival is not something that is

associated to time or place. It is a blessing of the Lord to the heart of the contrite Believer. Above that, it is a blessing that God actually desires to give everyone of His children. He wants to show you revival, and He wants you to be revived. Because, a revived Christian walks with God like no other. That is really what Revival is all about.

It is Christians who have found their Lord Jesus truly more precious than anything

else, and sit at His feet recognizing their own condition continually. May the articles in this issue affect you towards personal revival. Your fellow servant, Jared Kuiper

“Only fear the LORD, and serve Him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things He hath done for you.” 1 Samuel 12:24

Hi Guys, Well I would have to say this has been one of the most eventful periods between

publication. I guess it helps that an issue has not been produced since January. Thus many things have happened. We spent the month of April in Kamloops clearing the back of my dad’s property to put a

proper fence in. That was a challenge, and yet a lot of fun as it is the kind of work I enjoy. We ran about a kilometer of fence, and thus had a lot of trees and brush to remove. I think my dad will have firewood for a few years. ☺ My brother-in-law, Derek, helped me demolish some old mobile homes I had remaining from contracts last year. It turned into an exciting experience; as we decided to light one on fire after stripping it. We figured it should be pretty safe as everything was still pretty wet with spring rains. So after cutting a good fireline around it with the tractor, we lit her up. Well, the fire went so quickly, and heated up so much, it dried everything around it out and we nearly had a forest fire on our hands! It was all over in about forty-five minutes, but seemed more like a few hours. In May, we headed to Nova Scotia. Where, as it turns out, we will be moving shortly.

During the first few months of the year the Lord began laying Nova Scotia on our hearts, and we were counseled to take a survey trip. Because of Tiffanie’s pregnancy we realized we would have to do it soon or wait until some time after the baby was born. Through prayer we opted for sooner, made a few calls, packed a few bags, and found ourselves on the other sea-board. In three weeks time the Lord allowed us to cover the main areas of the entire province as well as part of New Brunswick and Maine. We were also able to meet with twelve pastors and preach in five churches. Through this trip the Lord greatly impressed on us the desolation of the Gospel in the Maritimes. Through Pastor Gerald Mosher in Halifax, NS we were directed toward Lighthouse Baptist

Church in Yarmouth on the southern tip of the province. And we enjoyed good fellowship with them over three services. After maintaining some contact over the summer months they requested I return to address the church again. Arrangements were made and I returned alone on Oct. 17. That Wednesday we shared a good service together and had a question and answer period afterwards. The folks went home to pray over it through the weekend and return to vote on Sunday. After good services again on Sunday the 23rd the members of LBC unanimously voted to call us into the Pastorate in Yarmouth. To backtrack a little into September, our second son was born on the 22nd. We

named him Conrad Tyler. Russell took one look and absolutely flipped out, but he got used to the idea and now enjoys his little brother. November 20th I was ordained and sent by Pastor Larry Bond and the Baptist Church at

Beaver Creek in Clatskanie, OR. Where we have been working out of for the last year. It was a very special occasion; humbling and full of import. We are now packing and preparing for the move. By the time you read this we will,

Lord willing, be moved into our house in Yarmouth. Which by the way the Lord wonderfully provided. Your fellow servants in the Lord, Jared & Tiffanie Kuiper

Holiday Safety Tips

1. Don't ride in a car. They are the cause of 20% of all fatal accidents. 2. Don't travel by air, water, or rail. 16% of all accidents are the result of one of these activities.

3. Don't stay home either. 17% of all accidents occur there. 4. Don't walk on the streets. 14% of the accidents happen to pedestrians.

5 Only .001% of all fatal accidents occur in church. Obviously then, being in church is the safest place to be!

Beyond Our Asking

More than hearts can imagine or minds comprehend, God’s bountiful gifts are ours without end We ask for a cupful

when the vast sea is ours We pick a small rosebud from a garden of flowers, We reach for a sunbeam but the sun still abides, We draw one short breath but there’s air on all sides Whatever we ask for

falls short of God’s giving For His greatness exceeds every facet of living,

And always God’s ready and eager and willing To pour out His mercy completely fulfilling. Just give Him a chance to open His treasures And He’ll fill your life

with unfathomable pleasures, Pleasures that never

grow worn out and faded And leave us depleted disillusioned and jaded

For God has a “storehouse” just filled to the brim With all that man needs if we’ll only ask Him!

Speak Out For Jesus!

You talk about your business Your bonds and stocks and gold; And in all worldly matters You are so brave and bold. But why are you so silent About salvation’s plan?

Why don’t you speak for Jesus, And speak out like a man?

You talk about the weather, And the crops of corn and wheat; You speak of friends and neighbors

That pass along the street; You call yourself a Christian, And like the Gospel plan --- Then why not speak for Jesus, And speak out like a man?

Are you ashamed of Jesus And the story of the Cross,

That you lower His pure banner And let it suffer loss?

Have you forgot His suffering? Did He die for you in vain?

If not, then live and speak for Jesus, And praise His precious name.

-Forrest L. Eonte

Put Christ Into Christmas

Put Christ into Christmas In every pure way,

Remembering ‘twas Jesus Who gave us this day A day for rejoicing All others above,

While Christians are voicing Their feelings of love.

There cannot be Christmas Where Christ is left out; The peace that He gives us,

Within and without, No angel to sing of Goodwill unto men;

Not thought of Divine love; No light to shine in!

Put Christ into Christmas,

In gifts on the tree, He’ll seal all the presents With “done unto me.” He’ll add to the pleasure, Direct from His store A love without measure And a peace to endure.

Put Christ into Christmas

So happy and real, The spirit He gives us, Our neighbours shall feel. Not just in December, But all the year through! And, oh friend, remember What Christ means to you!

Ben and Aleck Browning are twelve year old twins growing up in the late 1800’s. Their family has run onto

hard times and these young lads have decided to do what they can to help. After returning from a youth meeting

Ben makes the greatest decision in life, to commit himself to Christ. His twin brother, on the other hand stoutly

resists accepting the truth of the Gospel. This time Aleck must make a decision.

Mrs. Eastman stood in the back doorway, and Aleck Browning, cap in hand, stood waiting respectfully for her to finish her sentence. “You see,” she was saying, “I am more particular about Sunday than any other time in the week. We ought to be, you know, seeing it is the best day. Mr. Eastman is at home then, and Henry, and neither of them get very good dinners on other days. So if I can get my berries and peas fresh and nice, I am willing to pay a better price for them. The ones we get from the carts on Saturdays seem worse than any we have through the week. They gather up all sorts, I suppose, for Sunday trade... Well, we’ll consider it a bargain, shall we? A penny more on the quart than you can get anywhere else, and they are to be picked fresh every Sunday morning. It won’t take more than an hour these long mornings; and you live so near the garden that you can slip in and out, you and Ben, without being noticed.” Two things in that last sentence to consider. In the first place, why should he care about slipping into places without being noticed? He had not been in the habit of thinking whether he was noticed or not. Then that phrase, “You and Ben.” He had not thought of Ben helping. Now that he did think about it, he knew that Ben wouldn’t. Why not? Suppose it was Sunday? Didn’t folks have to eat on Sunday? Yes; but a good many people managed to get along without buying things to eat. His mother, he knew, would never allow the milkman’s bell to be rung at their gate on Sunday, and milk was more important than berries and peas. But what harm was there in going quietly into Mr. Harper’s garden on Sunday morning and picking a couple quarts of berries for Mrs. Eastman when she wanted them so badly, and was willing to pay a good price? As for the peas, they grew in their own garden. He could think over his Sunday-school lesson while he picked. Well, for the matter of that, why didn’t his mother get out Mrs. Eastman’s calico dress she was making and sew on it? She could think about the sermon while she sewed. “Thou hast sold thyself to work evil in the sight of the Lord.” Who said that? Aleck looked about him, almost expecting to see someone. Whether it was his own reference to “thinking over” the Sunday-school lesson while he picked Sunday berries, or whatever it was, that verse came and stood out before him and insisted on being thought about. He walked for a long distance without speaking. “If it is so, I have sold myself cheap; a penny on a quart!” This he said aloud after walking the entire length of the street. It was Saturday morning, and when he first heard Mrs. Eastman’s offer he had expected to be happy all day over the added penny. But when he looked it all over that night, he thought it the most uncomfortable day he had spent in a long while. “Sold?” He, Aleck Browning, who prided himself on his honesty, and industry, and manliness generally! Sold to do evil! He could not believe it possible. He would not for a long time own that it was evil. But that sentence about “slipping in and out without being noticed” seemed to hover around him. Finally, he told himself to say frankly whether he was willing to be noticed. Suppose the minister should come through the woods while he was picking the berries! Suppose his Sunday-school teacher should come along just as he was delivering four quarts of peas at Mrs. Eastman’s back-door! “Thou hast sold thyself to work evil in the sight of the Lord.” There came that verse again, at the most critical moment. What was the minister’s sight, or the teacher’s sight, compared with the Lord’s? Aleck ate very little dinner, and especially he would not touch the peas. His mother was worried; and when at tea-time he refused blackberries she looked really distressed, and questioned as to whether his head ached. No, his conscience ached; but this he did not say. He did, however, within an hour after tea, walk with a quick step and uplifted head to Mrs. Eastman’s back-door, and in plain, courteous language, made that lady understand that he must repent of his bargain; he had decided that it would not be right to sell goods on Sunday. She was just a trifle vexed; she told Aleck that it seemed to her that

Page 7: "Revival" Servants Heart Magazine Volume 7 Issue 2

A Servants Heart Winter 2011 Volume 7 Issue 2 Page 7

his goodness had come late in the day. This was so undoubtedly true that there was nothing to answer with but blushes. Then she said that it was most unfortunate for her that he had promised in the morning, for now she had lost her chances for Sunday supplies. To this Aleck returned eager answer that he would pick the peas and the berries at once, and bring them to her just at dusk, when, the evening dew fresh on them, they would keep, his mother thought, almost as well as thought picked in the morning. But Mrs. Eastman would have none of this; so it was with a somewhat sorrowful heart Aleck turned away. Still, his conscience felt light and glad. No more hints that he had sold himself troubled his heart. Yet, he walked on and on, scarcely noticing where he went, until suddenly he stopped short and said aloud, “Well, why not?” Another Bible verse had kept him company during the walk: “If the Lord be God, follow Him.” A familiar verse; he had heard his sister Effie repeat it many times during the last few weeks. It was not strange that he should remember it; but it did seem strange that he should never have thought seriously about the direction in it until this evening. Now here was a question to answer: Why not follow Him? Why not begin now? He knew he meant to be a servant of the Lord sometime; why not settle the matter at once? He must have stood there for several minutes; then he turned around and walked toward home slowly. It was time he was getting home; but he was not ready to reach there yet. Something was being decided. What if he should decide the wrong way?

At last, just as a new star shot into the sky, or at least appeared in sight, he quickened his steps, and they became firm steps, which meant decision. So did his voice, as he spoke aloud again to the listening stars - no, to the angels who were waiting to carry the news to heaven “I mean to do it!”

accepted Christ.

Ephesians 4:22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created

in righteousness and true holiness.

“Our nation needs revival.” I don’t believe any true Christian would contradict that statement. We hear sermons on revival all the time, and justly so, for we truly need it. Why aren’t we having revival? We have special week-long revival meetings in our churches across the land—why don’t we have revival? The Bible tells us that God wants to revive us. Why isn’t there a nation-wide revival? That isn’t an easy question to answer. But maybe we are asking the wrong question altogether. Each one of us ought to turn that question inward and ask, “Why don’t I have revival in my

life?” Have you ever had a leak in your automatic transmission and lost all the fluid out of it? Yeah, you know what I’m

talking about. What happened when that occurred? Well, before all the fluid was lost, this annoying little light on the dash probably came on saying “Check Your Engine.” Not the most convenient thing to see when you’re in the middle of nowhere, is it? Hoping to be able to make it home, the light is ignored and the driving is continued on down the road…for a while. Soon the tranny begins to do weird and sundry things that it didn’t do five minutes ago, such as not shifting properly and slipping gears. Shortly thereafter, the car is on the side of the road unable to go anywhere. The engine works fine, it still revs and runs like a top! Why can’t the vehicle drive!? Because it is lacking one essential ingredient: that perfectly good vehicle cannot and will not ever move again under its own power without the ATF. It is only lacking some fluid.

There is a parallel to this in our spiritual lives, albeit not a perfect one. Our old man, the sin nature, is still alive and kicking just like that engine that is still running. Galatians 5:24 tells us that those who are born again have crucified the flesh. Our sin nature is crucified: it’s hanging on Christ’s cross, not dead only crucified, completely stripped of its power over us. Our new man, the spiritual nature, is alive as well and desires to thrive and grow just like the gearbox of the car is ready to convert the torque of the driveshaft into spinning wheels that move the vehicle. The gearbox is simply waiting to be utilized. But in between these two we find something else. In Ephesians 4:23 we find the transmission of our walk with the Lord: being renewed in the spirit of our mind. A transmission is very picky. It won’t be usable if a person dumps any old kind of liquid down into it. To work properly, a tranny must have Automatic Transmission Fluid. Our life in Christ will be stagnating if we are not feeding our spiritual man the right type of nourishment.

Colossians 3:10 tells us how to renew the spirit of our minds, “And have put on the new man, which is renewed

in knowledge after the image of him that created him:” We renew our new man, or our spiritual man, by knowledge. But not by just any knowledge, it is the knowledge of our Creator! It is by how well and how earnestly we are trying to know God. Are you and I constantly and consistently in the process of learning of God? Do we meditate on the Lord and the things of God like we ought? How much time of our day do we spend on frivolous pleasures of this life compared to the things that have eternal value? I dare say the scale condemns us. Perhaps the reason we do not have revival in our life is because we have been depriving our spiritual transmission of the ATF it needs. Titus 1:16 says, “They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every

good work reprobate.” Does that verse prick your conscience like it does mine? Could it be we resent it because it resembles us? Let’s check our transmissions.

The old nature is… Completely stripped of it’s

power over us.

Who cannot be bought: Prov 1:10 "My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not."

Sin is attractive in its quick way to riches and makes us feel like "one of the crowd." If you listen to others instead of the truth you

will let yourself be consumed by your own lusts. Sin, although attractive, is deadly. There is no way for anyone to be friends with sin and keep their lives

clean. Don't let yourself be bought; turn and run--this is not cowardly, it is

extremely brave!

Whose word is their bond: Num. 30:2 "If a man vow a vow unto the Lord or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he

shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth." Trust is still the basis of our relationship with God. The most important relationship we can have.

Don't break that trust by breaking your word.

Who put character above wealth: 2 Chron. 1:7-10 " In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee. And Solomon said unto God, Thou hast shewed great mercy unto David my father, and hast made me to reign in his stead.

Now, O LORD God, let thy promise unto David my father be established: for thou hast made me king over a people

like the dust of the earth in multitude. Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great? " When Solomon saw the needs of others and asked for wisdom, God blessed him greatly. When building your character, you need to purpose to live for others and learn to be content with what you have. When you do this you will have greater wealth than anyone can physically accumulate.

Possessing opinions and a will: 1 Kings 18:21 "And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? If the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word. " Here Elijah challenged the people to take the stand to follow God. But they enjoyed the sinful pleasures that came with idol worship. In these days we still have the same problem, although North America’s biggest idols are money, cars, houses, ect. God wants all Christian men to separate themselves from the world and take a stand for Him.

Larger than their vocations:

1 Cor. 3:13-15 " Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon,

he shall receive a reward. If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so

as by fire." You should always strive to work better than you, or others, think you can. In Heaven there is a record of everything you have ever done in public, and in private; noticed or unnoticed you should continually be serving. It says "If any mans work abide......he shall receive a reward." You need to reach for the mark, and go for the Heavenly prize, because that is what Christ wants us to do.

Not Hesitating to take Chances: Phil. 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." Don't hesitate to do something right that seems a little scary, because God has promised that he will be with you no matter what we undertake. Never Losing their Individuality:

1 Cor. 15:10 "But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain;

but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me."

God made each person individually, be who God made YOU and don't try to imitate someone else.

Page 11: "Revival" Servants Heart Magazine Volume 7 Issue 2

A Servants Heart Winter 2011 Volume 7 Issue 2 Page 11

Being honest in all things:

Rom. 12:17 "Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men." God is honored with honesty. By being honest you will build a good reputation in the sight of men, and become a greater witness for Christ. Being honest is not easy in today's society, but lean on God's power and He will help you through anything.

Who make no compromise: Ps. 119:112 " I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes alway, even unto the end." Put your feet on the path God set for you, set your eyes on the goal and never waver.

Who don't confine ambitions to themselves:

1 Cor. 10:31 "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory God."

Whatever you're doing, make sure it something that is helpful to others and most of all, glorifying to God.

Who will not do it just because everyone else does it:

Rom 12:2 "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may

prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." God wants His people to renew their minds and focus on serving and obeying Him. He also wants us not to go along with the world, you need to be separate. God has a perfect will for you; so find and follow it today. Being true to friends through all circumstances:

John 15:12-13 "This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man

than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." You are to love one another as Jesus loved you, and He loved you enough to give up His life for you. You might not have to give your life for your friend, but you ought to stick with them through any circumstance; unless they are doing something wrong. Who do not believe evil ways are best for success:

Prov. 3: 7 "Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil."

If you see yourself as wise in your own way, you usually end up looking pretty stupid. Because Satan is so clever in disguising his selfish designs he can make a lot of wrong seem right. So whatever you do, seek God’s guidance and direction first before jumping into it.

Standing for the truth when it's unpopular: Eph. 6:10-17 "Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of

God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but

against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and

having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of

righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith,

wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:" To stand for the truth with few, or none on your side is hard; to do this you must rely on God's strength and power, and put on His armour. Don't be afraid to stand! Remember you are not alone; God IS on your side!

Saying no when the world says yes:

Prov. 1:10 “My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.” God's ultimate goal for you is for you to continually become more Christ-like. Stick up for the truth; even when the devil makes something wrong look fun. You need to say NO! Your friends might laugh at you but who cares;

they will respect your decision and you'll be rewarded for it at the judgment! Isn't that a great thought!

Back in the fifteenth century, in a tiny village near Nuremberg, lived a family with eighteen children. Eighteen! In order to merely keep food on the table for this mob, the father and head of the household, a goldsmith by profession, worked almost eighteen hours a day at his trade and any other paying chore he could find in the neighborhood.

Despite their seemingly hopeless condition, two of Albrecht Durer's elder children had a dream. They both wanted to pursue their talent for art, but they knew full well that their father would never be financially able to send either of them to Nuremberg to study at the Academy.

After many long discussions at night in their crowded bed, the two boys finally worked out a pact. They would toss a coin. The loser would go down into the nearby mines and, with his earnings, support his brother while he attended the academy.

Then, when that brother who won the toss completed his studies, in four years, he would support the other brother at the academy, either with sales of his artwork or, if necessary, also by laboring in the mines. They tossed a coin on a Sunday morning after church. Albrecht Durer won the toss and went off to Nuremberg.

Albert went down into the dangerous mines and, for the next four years, financed his brother, whose work at the academy was almost an immediate sensation. Albrecht's etchings, his woodcuts, and his oils were far better than those of most of his professors, and by the time he graduated, he was beginning to earn considerable fees for his commissioned works.

When the young artist returned to his village, the Durer family held a festive dinner on their lawn to celebrate Albrecht's triumphant homecoming. After a long and memorable meal, punctuated with music and laughter, Albrecht rose from his honored position at the head of the table to drink a toast to his beloved brother for the years of sacrifice that had enabled Albrecht to fulfill his ambition.

His closing words were, "And now, Albert, blessed brother of mine, now it is your turn. Now you can go to Nuremberg to pursue your dream, and I will take care of you."

All heads turned in eager expectation to the far end of the table where Albert sat, tears streaming down his pale face, shaking his lowered head from side to side while he sobbed and repeated, over and over,

"No...no...no...no." Finally, Albert rose and wiped the tears from his cheeks. He glanced down the long table at the faces he loved, and

then, holding his hands close to his right cheek, he said softly, "No, brother. I cannot go to Nuremberg. It is too late for me. Look, look what four years in the mines have done to

my hands! The bones in every finger have been smashed at least once, and lately I have been suffering from arthritis so badly in my right hand that I cannot even hold a glass to return your toast, much less make delicate lines on parchment

or canvas with a pen or a brush. No, brother...for me it is too late." More than 450 years have passed. By now, Albrecht Durer's hundreds of masterful portraits, pen and silver-point sketches, watercolors, charcoals, woodcuts, and copper engravings hang in every great museum in the world, but the odds are great that you, like most people, are familiar with only one of Albrecht Durer's works. More than merely being familiar with it, you very well may have a reproduction hanging in your home or office. One day, to pay homage to Albert for all that he had sacrificed, Albrecht Durer painstakingly drew his brother's abused hands with palms together and thin fingers stretched skyward. He called his powerful drawing simply "Hands," but the entire world almost immediately opened their hearts to his great masterpiece and renamed his tribute of love "The Praying Hands." The next time you see a copy of that touching creation, take a second look. Let it be

your reminder (if you still need one) that no one, no one, ever makes it alone!

A man, hearing of another who was 100 years old, said contemptuously: "What a fuss about nothing! Why, if my grandfather was alive he would be one hundred and fifty years old." During a recent trial at Auburn, the following occurred to vary the monotony of the proceedings:Among the witnesses was one, as verdant a specimen of humanity as one would wish to meet with. After a severe cross-examination, the counsel for the Government paused, and then putting on a look of severity, and an ominous shake of the head, exclaimed:"Mr. Witness, has not an effort been made to induce you to tell a

different story?" "A different story from what I have told, sir?" "That is what I mean." "Yes sir; several persons have tried to get me to tell a different story from what I have told, but they couldn't." "Now, sir, upon your oath, I wish to know who those persons are." "Well, I guess you've tried 'bout as hard as any of them." The witness was dismissed,

while the judge, jury, and spectators, indulged in a hearty laugh.

A broom selling Highlander, went into a barber's shop in Glasgow to get shaved. The barber bought one of his brooms, and, after having shaved him, asked the price of it. "Tippence," said the Highlander. "No, no," says the shaver; "I'll give you a penny, and if that does not satisfy you, take your broom again." The Highlander took it, and asked what he had to pay. "A penny," says Strap. "I'll gi’e ye a baubee," says Duncan, "and if that dinna satisfy ye, pit on my beard again."

A gentleman having a servant with a very thick skull, used often to call him the king of fools. "I wish," said the fellow one day, "you could make your words good, I should then be the greatest monarch in the world." A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him 'Why do you carry a 45?' The Ranger responded, 'Because they don't make a 46.'

Four college freshmen hung out together and were always intent on having more fun than studying. These guys were always late to a certain class, because they knew the professor was a pushover. They had a multitude of excuses why their assignments weren’t finished on time, or why they didn’t show up for class. When it came time for the final exam they were late. About the time everyone else was finishing, they showed up giggling and told the professor their car had a flat tire, so they wanted to take a make up test later. The professor said, “No problem, have a seat in the four corners of the classroom. I’ll prepare a special final exam just for you guys, and I’ll make it easier–it will only have one question. And since you guys haven’t turned in all your assignments, I’ll give you another chance. If all four of you answer this question correctly, you’ll all get an A, but if any of you miss it, you’ll fail the class.” He took a mo-ment to write the question in four exam bluebooks. The four guys were grinning when he handed them their books, but their smiles disappeared when they opened the test. The single question on the final exam was, “Which tire was flat?” As the professor stood there between them, they realized they were caught. They each tossed their exam books in the trashcan, as they walked out. Their excuses had caught up to them!

You can make excuses galore while you are here, but one day, all the “reasons” you give for not coming to God or serving Him will become empty excuses.

I was born in Quesnel, British Columbia and was raised on a small cattle ranch as the oldest of seven brothers. We had no experience of godliness in our upbringing other than my mother who was a believer and held to some basic teachings in the Bible. She did the best she could to raise her seven boys in a way she would be proud of them. It was a hard life for my mother and she would share her heart with me at times that the world is lacking godliness. I could not relate to that kind of language and in my opinion in those days it was not even that manly to even talk about it. I do recall my mother’s faith as the years went on to become more deep and real. As she would often at night play hymns on the piano I could tell that her songs were coming from an aching heart.

I was a young man with a dream to become a commercial pilot. I ended up in 1975 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan with a fresh commercial pilot license and my first commercial flying job. I was in a airplane crash in August of 1976 that really shook me to start thinking about life and death after narrowly escaping death in a burning airplane. It led me down a searching path that led to my salvation.

In 1977, I received Christ as my Saviour, but floundered around as a Christian for two years till finding a church that taught the Bible. I felt I had finally found what I was looking for when I found Victory Baptist Church in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Here was a church that was teaching the Bible in black and white; truth that started to make sense after I had read the Bible off and on. The Bible reading I did before always left me with more questions than answers. There were so many question in my mind that I knew had to be in the Bible but could not seem to get them answered on my own. I started attending the church faithfully in January of 1979. The church had standards and I was willing to conform to whatever the church taught in order to learn more of the scriptures. Through this, some big changes were made in my life. Changes like getting my hair cut, wearing a tie on Sunday, going to church each week were so different than how I had lived up to that time. Because of my faithfulness it was not long before the pastor had me start teaching the teenage boys Sunday School class. I took the challenge with zeal and vigor and did my best to direct the boys at our church into a deeper walk with Christ.

While doing this I learned some of the discouragements of ministry and discovered something was sadly lacking in the lives of these Christian boys from Christian homes. I justified it and reasoned my way to accept it, but it grieved me and caused me to doubt my faith walk like nothing else. Witnessing the failure of these young people to want to follow Christ almost caused me to turn back on my new faith in Christ. However, I knew the Bible was true and I clung to the Scriptures and promises even though I did not see it being lived out by several of those who I thought should know the Bible much better than me. Why were these boys not enjoying the Christ and salvation I was, what was missing? It was this question in the early days of my Christian life that finally led me on the path of revival.

In 1979, the answer for the teens I was teaching in Sunday School was really a symptom of a deeper problem. One in the home that indeed pointed to a yet deeper need; the need for a real relationship of the father, mother, and whole family with Christ. Looking back on it now, several families in our church had likely slipped into a form of fundamentalist religion, but did not really experience or were lacking the daily walk with God.

Now, having lived the Christian life for 34 years, I feel stronger than ever that the only real solution for lack in our churches is revival. This quest took me down a path to reveal revival as a possibility for the church today, not just something we can read about, but something we can experience in a wonderful and powerful way.

Not long after beginning attendance at Victory Baptist Church, I resigned my job as a commercial pilot and started attending Victory Baptist Bible College. There was one preacher during that phase of my Christian life who came and preached at our annual conference each year. His name was Pastor Peter Dyck from Harvey, North Dakota. His

Page 15: "Revival" Servants Heart Magazine Volume 7 Issue 2

messages always stirred my soul in a way that few others did. I spent time talking to him and asked him questions about his ministry. He shared experiences in his life that revealed God’s intervention in his life in a very powerful way at a meeting in Stienbach, Manitoba as a young man when Evangelist Paul Smith was preaching in a one month revival campaign. Paul Smith was the son of the renowned Oswald J. Smith who was a true revival preacher and revivalist in the early part of the 20th century. Paul Smith was preaching a revival campaign in that town when Pastor Dyck said that whatever it was that took place for him in those meetings changed his life for ever. When he would share his testimony, I would yearn for God to do something like that for us so the teen age boys I was teaching would experience something life changing. The outlook did not look good for them as I saw the direction they were going.

I continued to read books about men who made a difference through the ages. I read about John Wesley, Evan Roberts, Dwight L Moody, Charles H. Spurgeon, Jonathan Goforth and many others who God has used in a powerful way to change the direction of the church and indeed affected the church first, then whole nations. These men all seemed to emphasize the teaching and ministry of something that was absent in most preaching and teaching ministries today. I found this so exciting to read these accounts of what God had done and to think HE may do the same thing again. The common thread of one important teaching of all these men and ministries was the power of the Holy Ghost. These men were all affected by the power of holiness and they themselves would persue a life of holiness all the days of their ministry lives. When I would read these accounts with excitement thinking that maybe we could witness something similar in our church. It caused me to ponder the real possibility of revival for us? Could we really experience such a thing in our day? The more I read the more it seemed a possibility!

I will skip through several years to when I was in northern Saskatchewan in the 1990's. During this time I continued to seek for anything I could find about revivals in history. I wanted to know how they began, how they continued and what ended them? Then I landed upon a truth that was like a gold mine of spiritual truth to me. I had almost come to the conclusion that revival was not possible in our times until I discovered that revival had occurred in 1971 in Saskatoon. I was in grade 11 of my high school in British Columbia that year, while great things were happening in Saskatchewan for the glory of God!

When I first heard of the 1971 revival I was skeptical. I did more digging and seeking and the more I learned the more I was convinced it was the real thing. A real revival of holiness and the power of God just like the revivals of the last century. It began with a godly Baptist pastor named Bill McLoed who had a burden for God to do something more than the status quo for a Baptist church.. I reflected on my days teaching the teen age boys at Victory Baptist Church and how I felt during those discouraging days. Those boys needed to experience true revival, and I think the end for all of them could have been so different.

I was excited to think that what our Lord did for His disciples at Pentecost, He could still do for us today. I started to rethink my New Testament theology. I began to see the entire New Testament teaching from a different perspective. I saw the New Testament born in a rich spiritual time that gave the entire Christian perspective a new meaning from the book of Acts to III John. It was more than just believing a few cardinal doctrines and hanging on to them until Jesus comes back. It was a new hope that was born in my soul called REVIVAL with power for his people. I could see that the only thing that would change the direction of boys who were raised in a Christian home, going to a good church but not in fellowship with Christ was returning to a right relationship with Jesus through the Word of God, but under the POWERFUL INFLUENCE of the Holy Spirit.

I hate to say it but to this day most of those boys are still not living for the Lord. They are scattered all over the country but living in the world and for the world and very few of them are even going to a church today.

Over 30 years have transpired since I taught that Sunday School class and the Lord has taught me many lessons. One of them is, without revival we will never make much of a difference in our Independent Baptist movement. Two years ago I was called to pastor the church I first attended in 1979 and I still have the burden of revival more than ever.

My dream is that the boys I taught in that first Sunday School class in 1979-80 who are now middle aged men, having experienced the sorrow and death of the world will hear of a real revival in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. My prayer is that they with hundred of others will experience New Testament Christianity in a power that most others do not consider possible today. The revival in 1971 spread from Saskatoon to other cities across Canada and the United States and left in its wake thousands of transformed lives for the glory of God. I believe God can and will do it again if we as a church will just hunger and thirst for it and not be satisfied until we witness the power that will make the difference.

Words of Wisdom—Revival

A Gold Mine Truth is the fact that Revival is

possible today!

“I was powerfully converted on the morning of the tenth of October, 1821. I immediately found myself endowed with such power from on high that a few words dropped here and there to individuals were the means of their immediate conversion.” That is how the 29-year-old lawyer, Charles Grandison Finney, dramatically described his conversion to Christ.

Finney had a great career in law ahead of him, yet he soon laid it aside to preach the Gospel alone. He was asked by a missionary society to go to the Northern part of New York state and work in the mill towns. He went to Evans Mills and Antwerp. By the grace of God, revival broke out under his preaching and nearly every person in the area was saved! In fact, as he went from pioneer town to town the power of God swept like a wave turning people to salvation through the gospel of Jesus Christ. And as the spiritual awakening spread, so did Finney’s reputation.

During this period, Finney was given a tour of a cotton mill in Utica. His brother-in-law was also present and they were being shown around by the mill owner and plant superintendant. They entered the weaving room and walked along the rows of deafening machines. The workers immediately recognized Finney and eyed him as he passed. Just by his presence, before he had spoken a word, conviction spread over the entire factory. The Holy Spirit’s power was so evident the mill owner said to his superintendant. “Stop the mill and let the people attend to religion; For it is more important that our souls be saved than this factory be run!” The majority of those present that day came to Christ, causing Finney himself to say, “A more powerful meeting I scarcely ever attended.”

Yet many people hated Finney and his assoiciates, threatening and attempting to harm them. And we must remember this also as Christ Himself said “I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am

not of the world.” John 17:14 Being greatly used of God is not all ease and fame, it is a humble place of breaking that God’s Own light may be demonstrated fully.

The greatest local impact the Lord used Finney in was Rochester, NY. Much of the city turned to God, people from all classes came together without reserve. The “Rochester Observer” reported: “We have never known a revival more general among all the classes – the students, the mechanic, the professional man and the politician – a new song has been put in their mouths.” The “New York Evangelist” reported: “The Spirit of God is subduing all others and ranks of society.” The “Rochester Democrat and Chronicle” recorded these words: “No real history of Rochester, probably, has ever been written than did not give space to the Finney revival.”

After those days of revivalism, Finney became a pastor of New York City. He served both the Chatham Street Chapel and the Broadway Tabernacle. Later he became professor of theology and then president at Oberlin College in Ohio. He stayed there the rest of his days. But settling in Oberlin did not end Finney's travels. He continued his ministry of evangelism when school was out. He made two significant trips to Britain and made a profound impact on the British Isles. He also spent much time in writing and has impacted many through the printed page. After many long and fruitful years Charles Finney died at the age of 82 on August 16, 1875. It has been said of Finney that, “He sparked a revival which literally altered the course of history.”

What was the “secret” of Charles Finney’s power in the pulpit, and presence? There was no secret that was any more available to him than to you yourself, dear reader. Finney had power with God due to one simple fact; He acknowledged the Lord in all he did and laid aside himself. Every revival begins with an individual that submits himself to God. Even you could do the same as Finney if you let the Lord do the work; for it is He alone that does the work of true Holy Spirit Revival.

There is no forgiveness without repentance. There is no salvation without surrender.

There is no life without death. There is no believing without following.

Isaiah 57:15 “For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and

holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive

the heart of the contrite ones.”

About an hour ago I had lunch with a fellow preacher, and during the course of conversation he said that, “It is all going to get worse.” This view truly saddens me. Now, I am not one that believes that world will get better and better, in fact, I know the Bible says it shall wax worse and worse. But to make the statement in the attitude I heard is the cry of a defeatist. That may be as everything seems, if we focus only on the physical nature of things. But as a whole, the individuals of the church in North America have denied the power of God by keeping their eyes on an earthly plane.

It begs the question; Are we past the point of no return? Is there no longer revival? Are we out of time? Brothers, we are not! Revival is attainable again! Have you ever experienced personal revival, no matter how short? Just a time where the things of God struck home

with you, you were filled with joy, blessed of God, and could not help growing in grace because you knew you were close to the Lord for a time. Most Christians have experienced such a time, though the extent varies, and most have lost it again. But why can’t we make this stay, and grow, and spread to others?

These are important questions. And they need to be asked searching our own hearts individually. When we come to a place where we personally search out the answers to these questions, desiring nothing less than an answer by the power of God, our heart is being prepared for revival.

The Lord has taught me much about revivals in this past year, and it has been exciting to learn. The greatest realization has been of the very basic principle of revival. Most of us look at revival as some class action event, some great moving of the Holy Spirit, the “world being turned upside-down.” We have this idea that revival comes suddenly on a large group of people and grows from there. Because of this idea, we say we “hope” for revival; but we do not see it because it places the responsibility on some unknown, intangible entity. Rather, the key to revival (if we would truly see it) is already in the hands of the individual!

In the Churches/Christians current view of the “systematics of revivals” we remove the responsibility from ourselves and confirm our own stagnancy as we “wear a tie and carry a Bible.” But stop, and look at every reference to the beginnings of a revival, both historically and Biblically. You will always find one man or woman on their knees with a broken and contrite spirit, without exception. From one, you will often find groups of two or three that prayed together sincerely desiring the work of God.

The space that would be required to explain this fully would fill a book. So, I am attempting to write here in short form the basic concept so you might challenge yourself to go study it out. The truth of the matter is God wants to give us a revival today. He always stands ready, it is something that God actually desires to bestow on His children more than we can even dream of desiring for ourselves. Because revival is nothing more than close fellowship with God and conformation to the image of Christ. That is the entire will of God for the Christian; The Lord wants you to taste Revival!

My heart breaks, and real tears are shed from my eyes as I look out, even at the readership of this publication and desire Revival in your life, your church, and your community. Though I may not know you closely, I know what God can do for you, and I want to see it done.

Revival is possible today. But the Lord desires one man to be broken. One man to be contrite, realize his own worthlessness and God’s all worthiness. One man to yield all that he has to work an eternal weight in Glory through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Brother, you can be that one! The question is will you? Get on fire for God! Every Christian has the potential to be a Charles Finney, Spurgeon, Sheffey, Moody, Whitfield, Judson, or Goforth. Because it wasn’t those men, it was God working through men with broken hearts!

This issue has not covered the topic as maybe it ought to have. But I pray it helps you to begin thinking about the

principles brought forth. We will touch on this again some day soon; and Sanctification next time follows this thought.

“Calvary Road.” by Roy Hession If you can ever lay hands on this book I would strongly suggest you get it and read it. It is a down to earth,

basic principled truths of the Bible, look at personal revival. If you take this book to heart there is only one result and that is a closer walk with God, because it is thoroughly based in Scripture. Roy Hession is another Revival preacher from more recent years and his insights to the power and cruciality of individual, personal revival allow you to attain a better grasp on the subject. If you desire to see any kind of revival in North America, read this book… and apply it.
