mith wa orn in London, ngland, towealth American parent who enjoed a largecircle of in�uential friend. he lived for a timein New York and Jamaica efore moving ackto America in 1893 to enroll at Pratt Intitute, afew ear after the founding of the college.There, he tudied under the Intitute’chairman, Arthur Wele Dow. A painter,printmaker, photographer, and in�uential arteducator, Dow introduced mith to theigni�cant tle and idea of the da,including Art Nouveau and molim, whichhe oldl aerted in her mature work, withparkling originalit.

mith left Pratt in 1897 without a degree. Her mother had died the previou ear,and mith u�ered a pate of illnee. he oon moved ack to London with herfather and took up commercial work a an illutrator.

In London, he wa taken under the wing ofthe Lceum Theater group led  llen Terr(who a�ectionatel called her ‘Pixie’), HenrIrving, and ram toker. he traveled aroundthe countr with them, working on cotumeand tage deign. Traged truck again whenher father died. he wa 21 at the time.

Depite her peronal loe, mith wa ale to�nd earl commercial ucce and a healthdoe of notoriet in ngland. In 1901, heetalihed a tudio in London and held weeklalon for artit, author, and actor. In hi1907 ohemia in London, the nglih writerArthur Ranome decrie one of theeevening and the artitic circle urroundingmith, who went  the nickname “Gp,”

A compelling dipla of nine colorreproduction from the original group ofwatercolor portra molit and Celtic-inpired fairtale, folklore, and dream, inwhich pectral creature appear in phantamallandcape. One of the more enchanting workdepict large wave carring awa leeping�gure memerized  a ea iren. It’ditinctl erotic. Another depict a part-human, part-feline creature who ma ecating pell upon a pair of lover in aParadiiacal Arcadia.

Her color cheme, inpired  litening tomuic, are trikingl intuitive and experimental, et uumed in a pectral lightof intrigue and magic. I am left to imagine the e�ect of the actual watercolor,which mut have een wondrou. A mith wrote in “Picture in Muic”: “When Itake a ruh in hand and the muic egin it i like unlocking the door to aeautiful countr […] with plain, mountain and the illowing ea.”

mith’ participation in the occult i documented through her memerhip at theIi-Urania Temple of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn tarting in 1901,which tudied the occult, metaphic and the paranormal. Introduced to theOrder  W.. Yeat, he came to the attention of the cholarl mtic and poet, A.. Waite, who eventuall commiioned her to do the Deck in 1909.

The 78 jewel-like illutration of the Deck repreent archetpal uject that eachecome a portal to an inviile realm of ign and mol, elieved to echanneled through procee of divination. Queen, Knight, Fool, Prietee,Magician, and a whole hot of arcane paraphernalia populate thee world.

The originalit of the card’ tlization, draftmanhip, and compoition make fora magni�cent aethetic achievement while diplaing mith’ jaw-droppingimagination for fanta, foll, ecta, death, and the macare. Two ear later, hecompoed illutration for ram toker’ lat ook, Lair of the White Worm(pulihed in 1911, a ear after the author’ death) and converted to Catholicim.

Depite her earl fame and determination, mith lipped onto ocurit. henever achieved the �nancial ecurit he deired, nor the recognition hedeerved. The exhiition note the artit’ feminit ent in her work and life, and
