1st Technical-Meeting 15 – 16 Dec 2004

REWARDscenario 1

• use recupareted water after rinsing, here „Potable water quality is necessary“: but it is very hard to achieve this quality because of anorganic contaminations.

• is „potable water“ really necessary? • MP ultrafiltration works up from ~20.000 Daltons, sugars, salts are not

filtered out• rinsing shall: remove detergents, lower PH-value, speck removal by

prerinsing=postwash• what has to be investigated:

– ph- increase can be inhibited by adding acid?– how much recycling can be done,

• conclusion: – stabilize the process in the rinse step for a steady process, reuse water from

prerinse for final rinse by filtering and adding acids für neutralisation– what is the minimum amount of potable water to fullfil the regulations

• next steps:– check the DIN regulations until tomorrow morning ( T. Ausländer)– requirement specification from the end user: washing process, regulations,

law…

Page 9: REWARD 1 st Technical-Meeting 15 – 16 Dec 2004 REWARD

1st Technical-Meeting 15 – 16 Dec 2004

REWARDscenario 1: role of ozone

• decolourizing• desinfection• increase solubility of contaminants• could possibily help neutralisation• conclusion:

– ozone is important in scenario 1

Page 10: REWARD 1 st Technical-Meeting 15 – 16 Dec 2004 REWARD

1st Technical-Meeting 15 – 16 Dec 2004

REWARDscenario 2

• water from prewash is stored in an additional tank and used for washing in the next run

• ozone must be used for sanitizing

Page 11: REWARD 1 st Technical-Meeting 15 – 16 Dec 2004 REWARD

1st Technical-Meeting 15 – 16 Dec 2004

REWARDscenario 3

• filtering water from wash and prewash process• compared to filtering in the final steps the contaminants are coarser• prefiltering with sieves has to be used, particles should be smaller than

about 500µm for microfiltering• a 200 µm filter arrangement would be suitable (manufacturer: AUXILL )• might be possible to use existing pump for the filtrations, but for simplicity

a test bed with pumps of it own will be used• there is a trade off between power needed for pumping and filtration

surface: the larger the filter, the lower the power• conclusion:

– scenario 3 should be investigated further– filter lay out is strongly dependend on boundary conditions: costs for energy,

pumps, membranes…..– what is the effect of strongly soiled cleaning water on the ware? has to be

investigated further / connection with the rinse step water reduction

Page 12: REWARD 1 st Technical-Meeting 15 – 16 Dec 2004 REWARD

1st Technical-Meeting 15 – 16 Dec 2004

REWARDscenario 3: role of ozone

• sanitizing residual water in the machine at the end of a shift

• compatibility of filter material with ozonated water? (important in all scenarios), this has to be checked!

Page 13: REWARD 1 st Technical-Meeting 15 – 16 Dec 2004 REWARD

1st Technical-Meeting 15 – 16 Dec 2004

REWARDscenario 4 + 5

• long term target

Page 14: REWARD 1 st Technical-Meeting 15 – 16 Dec 2004 REWARD

1st Technical-Meeting 15 – 16 Dec 2004

REWARDDefinition of Standard Soil

• standard soil for investigating the process water, not cleaning efficiency• what has to be specified

– components, incl. brand– preparation– temperature

• use „moving target specification“:– start with a specification, check it regularly by real soil from canteens– modify standard if necessary

• components:– based on „Hobart-Steinfurt-Standard“

• mashed potatoes, brown gravy, white sauce– in addition:

• sugar• detergents

• T. Ausländer will circulate a suggestion• within 1 month partners can comment• then a 1st version will be defined

REWARDNext steps: minimizing saturation time and ozone generation

• Ozone generator• ► definition of the characteristics: gas phase concentration of ozone and gas flow

range• ( calculate amount of grams ozone / hour)

• Mass transfer • ► which device will be used to achieve maximum kLa ?• ( possible testing by LPAC ? )

• the ozone / water tank• ► in situ production of ozone or use of a storage tank ?• ► in the case of a storage tank: volume ? Dimensions ?• Sensoring ozone in the storage tank• ► need for [O3]gas measurement ?• ► need for [O3]liq measurement ?• ORP-electrode: testing by LPAC• other devices (in case ORP is not usable

because it is perhaps too pH-sensitive) ?

• Compatibility ozone – filter system • ( possible testing LPAC ? )

• Lab-scale testing (oxidation process)• ► building of this lab-scale chamber: who ? • Characteristics of the chamber ?

Page 21: REWARD 1 st Technical-Meeting 15 – 16 Dec 2004 REWARD

1st Technical-Meeting 15 – 16 Dec 2004

REWARDNext steps: minimizing saturation time and ozone generation

• what has to be tested– test bed for ozone transfer optimization

• with water pump, venturi, millenniumpore pipes

• „wallfilter“ approach from MP should be taken into account

• to decide– specification of requirements: KUL, CP, Hobart, FHS– sketch / draft of a system with relevant parameters: FHS– design / construction at Seaking

Page 22: REWARD 1 st Technical-Meeting 15 – 16 Dec 2004 REWARD

1st Technical-Meeting 15 – 16 Dec 2004

REWARDNext steps: filtering

• specify requirements for the test bed: MP, FHS, Hobart

REWARDNext steps: definition of measurands

• measurands for process control in the machine– water temperature yes– turbidity yes– foam creation yes– water flow yes– ph-value yes– ozone concentration in water yes– ozone concentration in air within machine no– ozone concentration in air outside of machine YES

Page 26: REWARD 1 st Technical-Meeting 15 – 16 Dec 2004 REWARD

REWARDozone measurement

• ozone concentration outside the machine has to be monitored because of worker safety

• are German and European regulations consistent?• ozone in water:

– measuring range?– reproducibility?– ORP electrode will be tested at KUL

• in air:– measuring range– reproducibility

• DIN 19627 important, EN 1278• discussion between KUL, FHS, FHR, CP, Hobart

REWARDNext meeting

• „ozone meeting“ will be held according to the needs of KUL and CP

• „filter meeting“ one day before the next technical meeting

• technical meeting for all:– at FH , 17-3-2005, 13.00 - 18-3-2005, 13.00
