RF Coaxial Lightning & EMPProtection• In-line RF Coaxial Protection Against Lightning & EMP• Ideal Protection for Cellular Infrastructure Equipment• Available in l/4 Stub Tuner or Gas Discharge Tube
Formats• Maintains Protection after Initial Strike or Pulse
M/A-COM offers a complete series of RF Coaxial Lightning &EMP Protection Devices for use in cellular infrastructure appli-cations. EMP (electro-magnetic pulse) occurs primarily as aresult of direct lightning strikes to infrastructure equipmentwhich can produce fast rising electric fields within microseconds. These electric fields induce high voltage pulsesthrough unprotected antennas and coaxial transmission cableswhich can ultimately lead directly to the primary communica-tion equipment. The EMP threat, generated from unpredictablelightning strikes is a serious concern for cellular operatorsaround the world. Damage from a lightning strike can result incostly repair of equipment as well as significant loss of airtimeservice to subscribers.
M/A-COM RF coaxial lightning protection (LP) devices havebeen designed for use in commonly deployed cellular infra-structure including GSM, NAMPS, PCS 1900 and DCS 1800operating formats. The use of coaxial lightning protection hastwo primary benefits for cellular applications. First, RF coaxiallightning protection can easily be inserted into existing infra-structure architecture either as a cable assembly or as an in-line adapter. This facilitates cell site design and retrofitcapabilities. Secondly, the RF coaxial protection has beendesigned to facilitate and not degrade RF performance duringnormal operation of the system.
Surge ProtectorsThese devices incorporate internal gas discharge tube (GDT)technology to provide a low impedance path to discharge theEMP to ground. The GDT is hermetically sealed with an inertgas which is not radioactive and requires no special handling.GDT devices are broadband due to their inherently smallcapacitance and cover frequencies up to 2.5 GHz. Once aGDT device has been activated with an impulse and thevoltage level dissipated, the device becomes inactive and willrequire subsequent maintenance or replacement. Surgeprotectors are available in convenient bulkhead mountingconfigurations with a wide variety of standard interface choicesincluding Type N, 7-16 and SMA.
l/4 Stub Tunersl/4 stub tuners are three port coaxial devices. The third port, extending from the main electrical path, serves as a terminatedshort circuit element at a predetermined distance from the RFtransmission path. This distance is designed to be exactly onequarter wavelength at the desired centering frequency (Fo). l/4stub tuners offer very low VSWR and feature very high attenu-ation of incoming pulses but must be applied across relativelynarrow bandwidths (± 70 MHz). M/A-COM offers standarddesigns for the most popular cellular frequency bands tofacilitate usage without the need for a custom design. Stubtuners offer the greatest protection for sensitive electroniccomponents as they have neither the sparkover or residualvoltage characteristics of GDT devices. Stub tuners areextremely reliable and maintenance free since they incorpor-ate no active components. Standard stub tuner designs existfor GSM, PCS 1900 and DCS 1800 frequencies with a widevariety of connector interfaces such as Type N and 7-16available. Cable assemblies, including low loss cable options, are also available to provide complete in-line solutions for basestation design.

• Ideal for use with GSM, PCS and DCS• Maintenance Free Operation• Low VSWR Within Specified Bandwidth• Configurations include direct attachments to Cable
variants• Optional White Bronze™ Finish
Descriptionl/4 stub tuners are three port coaxial devices which employ ashort circuit element as a means of protection against lightningor EMP strikes. The third port, extending from the side of themain transmission path of the connector, is terminated in ashort circuit at a predetermined distance from the main path. The distance is calculated to be exactly one quarter wave-length (l/4) at the desired centering frequency (Fo).
In order to offer the most flexible solutions for infrastructureapplications, stub tuners are available in either an individualconnector format or as a cable assembly ready for directinstallation into a RF coaxial transmission line. A wide varietyof interface styles are available to meet existing retrofit or newdesign requirements including Type N, and 7-16. Standardcrimp tooling is available to facilitate direct connector termina-tion to RG58 or low loss Times™ T-Flex 402 cables.
Application InformationThe centering frequency is an important selection criteriabecause l/4 stub tuner design techniques restrict the band-width in which acceptable VSWR performance can beachieved. Stub tuners exhibit a v-shaped VSWR response.Typically this bandwidth is 8% of the centering frequency.Specified bandwidth in excess of 8% begins to experiencedegradation of VSWR at the centering frequency. Stub tunersare frequency specific in application as opposed to surgeprotectors which address a wider spectrum of frequencies. Asa result of this restriction, M/A-COM offers a wide range ofstandard stub tuner devices which address commonlydeployed cellular frequency bands such as GSM, NAMPS,PCS 1900 and DCS 1800.
l/4 Stub Tuners
Stub tuners, by the nature of their short circuit designs, do not have a sparkover or residual voltage as found in surgeprotectors. This ensures the greatest levels of protectionagainst repeated lightning or EMP strikes within specifiedfrequency bands. Stub tuners are also extremely reliable andmaintenance free since they contain no active parts. Thischaracteristic can be important when considering the total costof ownership, including the need for replacement or repair ofthe device within difficult to reach infrastructure equipment.
Some alternative plating finishes are available with M/A-COM’sStub Tuner Lightning products. Standard plating finishes areshown within the data sheet, but alternatives are available bycustomer request. Details of M/A-COM’s new “White Bronze”finish are shown in the application notes associated with thisdata sheet. For more detailed information, please contact yourlocal M/A-COM field sales office.

• Excellent for Broadband Frequency Applications• Field Replaceable Gas Discharge Tube• Available Interfaces Facilitate Retrofit Capabilities• Low VSWR up to 2.5GHz• Specialized White Bronze™ Finish
DescriptionSurge protectors incorporate hermetically sealed gas dis-charge tube (GDT) technology within the coaxial transmissionline to provide a low impedance path to discharge the EMP toground. The GDT is loaded into the connector housing fromthe side via a weather sealed access port. The GDT does notrequire special handling or safety precautions as the inert gasused is non-radioactive. In an active state, the transverse-mounted GDT introduces some inherent extra capacitancewhich is compensated electrically in the design and does notdegrade overall VSWR performance. As a result, M/A-COMsurge protectors perform well in applications up to 2.5 GHz.
Surge protectors are made active when a high voltage impulsegenerated from a lightning or EMP source appears on thecoaxial line. The electric field produced causes the inert gas to ionize which then creates a very low impedance path toground, thus directing the current away from sensitiveelectronic elements. Once the impulse ceases and the voltagelevel reduces, the GDT becomes inactive again leaving aresidual voltage on the coaxial line. M/A-COM suppliesdevices with a selection of GDT elements to carry 10kA, 20kAor 50kA peak current. In addition, GDT devices are availablewith a wide variety of interfaces such as type N, 7-16 and SMAto facilitate retrofit installation.
Application InformationThe significant advantage of using surge protectors is theirability to handle a wide bandwidth from DC to 2.5 GHz. Appli-cations where multiple frequency bands need to be transmittedat the same time also benefit from the surge protector designcharacteristics, i.e. the device is required to pass DC or lowfrequency AC bias voltages as well as primary transmit orreceive signals, but in addition required to stop high voltageimpulses. In operation, the gas discharge tube continues toexhibit a voltage drop of about 20 volts while the deviceremains in an energized state. It is important to note that therewill be a small period prior to the device becoming active whenhigh energy will be present on the transmission line. This isbecause the ionization of the inert gas is inherently notinstantaneous. The time taken for the GDT to become fullyactive is determined by the rise time of the applied impulse,
Surge Protectors
typically in the order of 1kV/µS, and the impulse sparkovervoltage which is normally 800 volts. Standard devices willtherefore take 800nS typically to reach full condition. Highenergy for this period of time may not be acceptable in someapplications and should be considered as a system designparameter.
GDT techniques employed for lightning or EMP protectionhave a finite life span once activated. When measured, this isfound to be inversely proportional to the level of energy dissi-pated by the device. In tests, the GDT devices will withstandmultiple impulses of 20kA but only a single impulse of 50kA. It is important to note that once failure occurs, the deviceremains a short circuit to guarantee continued protection. Tofacilitate the maintenance and reduce the expense of GDTbased systems, M/A-COM has designed these devices to befield replaceable. Replacement GDT capsules are available forfield installation after a subsequent lightning or EMP strike.Surge protectors have been specifically designed with fully-retained sealed covers which are located in an accessiblelocation to facilitate maintenance. GDT capsules require only astandard wrench for field replacement.
Surge protectors are plated standard with M/A-COM’s special-ized White Bronze™ finish, specially formulated to providecorrosion resistance in potentially aggressive physical environ-ments. White Bronze™ plating is ideal for wireless applicationsdue to its excellent conductivity, and non-ferrous compositionfor low intermodulation characteristics. Detailed applicationnotes are available for proper selection of lightning protectiondevices (surge protectors & stub tuners) as well as inter-modulation and White Bronze™ plating. Please refer to theapplication section at the back of this data sheet for moredetails on availability of these application notes.

RF Coaxial Lightning& EMP Protection Application Notes
To ensure that proper, low level contact resistance is established between the LP deviceand mounting wall, it is recommended that a minimum torque of 50 in/lbs / 5.65 n/m be applied to tighten the connector mounting nut. A recommended minimum torque of35 in/lbs / 3.95 n/m should also be applied for installation of replacement surge protectorcapsules to ensure proper protection performance.
In order to ensure that resultant currents from lightning or EMP strikes do not interferewith parallel transmission lines within protected electronic equipment, surge protectordevices must be installed with proper orientation. The surge protector side of thedevice should be mounted in the unprotected side of the equipment while themounting nut is positioned internally in the protected area.
It is important when planning lightning protection, that the user can estimate thepotential number of direct strikes. This information may influence the type of deviceselected or the requirement for routine maintenance checks. Significant attention mustbe paid to the height of supporting structure as this, when related to the typicalnumber of thunderstorms in a particular region, allows us to estimate the probability ofa direct strike taking place. To assist our customers in this, the following table andchart has been included in this note. This should enable lightning protection plannersto establish the likelihood of direct strikes across a network anywhere in the world.
