Introduction

• Most of the organic waste in Germany is collected separately

• Original intention: recycling in composting plants

• Present-day intention: energy generation + recycling, hence:

1. fermentation, followed by2. composting, or direct supply for agricultural use

Pilot Project

• Separation of an organic fraction from co-mingled household

waste as an alternative to separate collection

• Trial period 01.01.2009 – 30.06.2010

• Quantity approx. 45,000 tonnes

• Offenbach, a town with about 120,000 inhabitants

7. Future Outlook

• Biogenic portion

• Material > 60, further sorting possible (plastics, RDF...)

• The process is suitable: - for obtaining a high recycling quota- for maintaining a

nutrient cycle- for contributing to

climate protection
