RHEINHUETTE: SPECIAL MATERIALS FOR SPECIAL APPLICATIONS

As experts in corrosion and wear resistant materials Rheinhütte offers process and media-specific

solutions. Rheinhütte will select the right material for your conveyance requirement and will ensure

minimum wear during long operational life – even when handling difficult media.

PLASTICS

In pump engineering the non-metallic materials which are mainly used, are predominantly fluoropolymers

and polyolefins. The advantage of these materials is their high resistance to acids and alkalis at low to

medium temperatures. To resist external forces these pump types are usually protected by a metal casing.

Mineral casting/ composite material

Polymercarbide

A corrosion- and wear-resistant material that promises significantly longer service life and thus lower life

cycle costs than conventional materials in pump construction, especially in chemically aggressive media.

Fluorpolymere

Polyvinyliden-Fluoride PVDF

PVDF is characterized by its excellent general corrosion resistance, high resistance to stress cracking and

good UV resistance. Its usable temperature range is between -20 °C and 130 °C. The material is especially

suitable for pumping hydrofluoric acid of all concentrations up to boiling point, liquids containing halogen,

nitric acid/hydrofluoric acid pickles and for the evaporation of spent hydrochloric acid.

Perfluoralkoxi PFA

PFA is a perfluorated alkyvinyl ether. Centrifugal pumps lined with PFA can be used up to 180 °C. With a

few exceptions this material has a universal resistance to chemicals.

Polytetrafluorethylene PTFE

PTFE shows an outstandy resistance against nearly all organic and inorganic media over a wide

temperature range. Centrifugal pumps made of PTFE can be used between -50 °C and 180 °C.

Polyolefins

Polypropylene PP

In many applications PP represents an economical alternative to high grade metallic materials. This

material is suitable for pumping salt solutions, almost all dilute alkalis and acids and is also frequently used

in hydrochloric acid pickling solutions. It can be used for working temperatures between 0 °C and 100 °C.

Polyethylen PE 1000 UHMW-PE

Only ultra high molecular weight low pressure polyethylene is used. Its usable temperature range is

between -50 °C and 80 °C. Its general corrosion resistance exceeds that of PP in some cases. Due to its

very good wear resistance, centrifugal pumps made of PE are very often used in media that are both

corrosive and abrasive, such as in flue gas cleaning.

Polyethylene PE 1000 R

PE 1000R is a further development of the standard polyethylene PE 1000 with wear-minimizing additives

for up to 20% higher resistance - for use in highly abrasive suspensions with process-related critical solids

content. The material can be used at temperatures from -20 °C to +80 °C.

METAL

The range of metallic materials encom-passes a wide variety of very different types of material which are

distinguished mainly by their alloy composition, their structure and their manufacturing process. This gives

each material its characteristic properties and allows an optimal material to be selected to suit the

application.

Cast Iron and Cast Steel

Ferritic cast steel 1.0619

High temperature ferritic cast steel, can be used up to 450 °C. For use with low or non-corrosive media,

such as molten sulphur.

Ferritic cast steel 1.7357

High temperature ferritic cast steel, can be used up to 450 °C. The most frequent application is the

pumping of molten salts.

High Alloy Cast Steel V5700 (0.9650)

Particularly wear resistant high alloy cast iron. This material is used for suspensions with an abrasive effect

such as gypsum, carbonates, carbides. sand, ore or metal oxides.

High Alloy Cast Steel

Ferritic stainless steel 1.4136S

Corrosion and erosion resistant high alloy ferritic cast steel. Typical applications are highly concentrated

sulphuric acid up to 180 °C, oleum, fertilizer production, crude and solid phosphoric acid.

Ferritic stainless steel RHRS

Corrosion and erosion resistant high alloy ferritic cast steel. Typical applications are highly concentrated

sulphuric acid up to 225 °C, oleum, fertilizer production, crude and solid phosphoric acid.

Austenitic stainless steel RHSX

Special high-alloyed material with excellent resistance to erosion-corrosion for pumps operating in the

dryer-, intermediate- and end-absorber stage of sulphuric acid plants up to temperatures of 150 °C.

Austenitic stainless steel 1.4306S

High-quality, molybdenum-free material suitable for applications such as pumping of ammonium nitrate

melt, hot nitric acid at medium concentrations and also the vaporization of waste nitric acid.

Austenitic stainless steel 1.4361

Low carbon silicon alloy material for pumping strongly oxidising media. Particularly suitable for hot highly

concentrated nitric acid, e.g. 98% HNO3.

Austenitic stainless steel 1.4408

Austenitic chromium nickel molybdenum steel with a good general resistance to corrosion. These

materials are suitable for pumping almost all organic liquids, 50% caustic soda up to 90 °C, KTL paint, pure

phosphoric acid, dry chlorine, liquid sulphur, PTA and many other media.

Austenitic stainless steel 1.4581

Austenitic chromium nickel molybdenum steel with a good general resistance to corrosion. These

materials are suitable for pumping almost all organic liquids, 50% caustic soda up to 90 °C, KTL paint, pure

phosphoric acid, dry chlorine, liquid sulphur, PTA and many other media.

Semi-austenitic 1.4463

Semi-austenitic, easily welded material with an increased strength and a good general resistance to

corrosion. Due to its good welding properties and wear resistance it is frequently used for jacketed pumps

for handling melts containing solids, such as pitch and tar.

Duplex 1.4517

Duplex (semi-austenitic), molybdenum and copper alloyed material with a high resistance to pitting and

stress corrosion. This material is one of the super duplex steels. lt can be used with crude phosphoric acid,

containing solids at up to 100 °C, hot sea water, many solutions containing chloride, FGD suspensions and

sulphuric acid at all concentrations at low temperatures.

Fully austenitic special stainless steel R3020

Fully austenitic special stainless steel with a high chromium and nickel content. High resistance to pitting,

stress corrosion and intercrystalline corrosion. Suitable for 70% caustic soda up to 200 °C, sulphuric acid at

all concentrations at low and medium temperatures, sulphuric acid pickling solutions, in certain areas of

the manufacture of phosphoric acid, for pumping solutions with a high chloride content and in spin baths.

High austenitic stainless steel 1.4529S

High-quality, fully austenitic cast material with high resistance in chloride-rich, acidic and solid media. Use

in REA absorber and quencher liquids, for acidic and chloride-containing gypsum sludge, in phosphoric

Silicon Iron Alloys

SIGUSS

Highly corrosion resistant chromium alloy silicon cast iron with a good resistance to wear and increased

chemical resistance. This material is chemically resistant to H2SO4 at all concentrations up to boiling

hydrochloric acid, FGD liquids, very heavily contaminated phosphoric acid, hypochlorites and solutions

with oxidising chlorides.

Pure Metals

Titan (3.7031)

Titanium is especially resistant to heavily oxidising and chloride containing media. The material is

preferred for use in chloralkali-electrolysis, for pumping bleaching solutions containing chlorine and in the

manufacture of acetic acid.

Titan Pd (3.7032)

refined alkalis which must not be contaminated with iron ions.

Ceramics

Pumps made of ceramic materials are particularly suitable for media which are highly abrasive and at the

same time corrosive, where pumps made from metallic materials and plastics may have a relatively short

operational life.
