fall 2016 :: rhetoric seminarClassical and contemporary rhetorical theory offers a set of unique affordances for the study of scientific and medical practice—including explorations of the role of power, place, and precarity in how,risk is assessed,expertise is defined,decisions are made, anduncertainty is mitigated and navigated.In this seminar, you will learn how to mobilize rhetorical theory as “an instrument capable of performing...intricate analysis” (Fahnestock & Secor) not necessarily to traverse “well-worn paths of critique” (Alaimo & Hekman) or to perform “hit-and-run rhetorical criticism” (Hartelius), but to navigate complexities associated with disability, disease, and crisis. We’ll explore a working definition for “care” that is responsive to human frailty and vulnerability amidst constantly changing cellular, sociopolitical, economic, environmental, and technoscientific phenomena. Also, you will have an opportunity to co-author a publishable manuscript about conducting sustainable research in the field of rhetoric of health and medicine. Students interested in intersections between race, class, ethnicity, and biomedical science are especially encouraged to enroll.
Finally, you will have an opportunity to co-author a publishable manuscript about conducting sustainable research in the field of rhetoric of health and medicine.
