RHINO REPORT
April 27th, 2016 Ramsey Middle School Minneapolis, MN Volume 1 No. 12 School Play Interviews
BY: Sierra Krueger-‐Wolfe
The musical is something that is a great opportunity for many kids and they love it, but I was wondering: does anyone not like the musical experience, and what makes this program so good or bad for these students? So I interviewed some students, and asked them if they like the musical and why, and this is what they said: "I really like the musical thing, its very nice. I love musicals, I take part in a lot of them, and they’re like the essence of me." "I like the musical because it gives me a chance to be myself, and the snacks are really good." "I don’t." "I like the musical because it gives you a chance to sing in a large group, if you’re in the chorus. And if you fail you don't look like a complete fool, so it works out." "We were all potatoes." "I think I like it because I get to practice acting so, its good practice for my future as a famous actress, its just good practice for me." "I don't like the musical." "Its boring for anybody who doesn't have a good part." "I don't like it because it’s kind of a biblical story, and I thought we weren't allowed to do those." "I kind of like it, I kind of don't. I like it because its fun to like dance around and stuff, but I don't like it because I feel like they don't really care about the dancers, just the singers and that’s kind of rude." "I like it, I think that it’s going to be really cool when its all done and, I hope that people like it." "I really like the musical because, I like how everyone gets to participate in it even if maybe its your first time, because when you get into high school they have cuts." "I like the musical cause its really fun and its good to make new friends and everyone gets to participate because everyone gets casted. So yeah I really like it."
Ramsey Competes at MPS Unified Special Olympics
From: Ms. Hokr The Ramsey team took third place, out of 10 MPS
middle and high schools, at the second annual MPS Unified Sport Special Olympics track meet at the U of M field house on Friday, April 15th. “Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding.” Twenty students from Ramsey took part and have been practicing together once a week for a couple of months. They had fun participating and cheering for their teammates as well as the other students competing.
Ramsey Special Olympics Team From: Ms. Di Please welcome our Special Olympics team to Ramsey. We are the “Ramsey Rhinos,” and proudly represent you all. Our team of 7 athletes [Jose, Theo, and Cotez from Ramsey, 4 others from Green Central] participate in track and field events including 100 meter dash, 50 meter dash, softball throw, shot put, and standing broad jump. On Saturday, May 21st, we compete in an area meet at Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis. Our athletes are up against 40+ other teams from Hennepin County, Ramsey County, and Carver County. Look for us on the track as we practice.
Math Competition From: Mr. Halvorsen
A huge shout out to Ms. Krasean and the awesome job of getting 80 students to give up their lunch for two days to compete in a math competition. These kids from all the 6th grade math classes are competing to be one of the top two teams that will represent Ramsey in a few weeks for the district math competition. Thank you to the teachers that helped make this happen and please acknowledge students on their dedication and effort to represent Ramsey. Thank you, Ms. Krasean, for all your hard work.
Ramsey Debate From: Ms. Healy
On 3/23, three members of the Ramsey Debate Team, part of the Minnesota Urban Debate League (MNUDL) through Augsburg College, debated at the City Championship tournament.

Random Science Question BY: Solveig J.
Me and a few of my friends were wondering, why do stars burn in space? I mean, there's no oxygen for them to use to burn because to make fire you need fuel, a spark, and oxygen… but there's no oxygen in space!
Mr Koupal’s answer: Hydrogen [fuses into] helium, which releases an insane amount of energy which is what is glowing, so actually stars don't burn.
(Mr. K.s extended answer: It is a common misconception that stars burn or that they are made of fire. Both
are incorrect, as mentioned above. Also incorrect it that stars are made of gas. They are actually made of plasma, a fourth state of matter beyond gas. Plasma only exists naturally in stars, like our Sun.)
The Harper Lee Situation BY: Marley Hinschberger
The tragic death of author Harper Lee on February 19th at the age of 89 set the stage for her most well known classic To Kill A Mockingbird to stop mass production for schools. Every year in 8th grade, you read this amazing book. This year Ramsay got 120 books for 10 for a total cost of $1200. We usually buy 50 replacement books for a total of $500. We were told to take good care of the books because they were new and they needed them till they ordered new ones in however many years. But now because of the new rules against mass production of [TKAM] for schools, we can no longer buy new books. Now the books are $20 instead of $10. So please, eighth graders, and soon to be, 8th graders, please take care of this fabulous story. So is this decision fair? It will give more money to the family so they get more royalties. But is it fair to teachers?

BY: Madison Curtis He sat on the small wooden bench, looking out over the cold water. He pulled his jacket tighter around him as a gust of wind came through. It was a cold December night and he had needed to take a walk. He sat on the bench and looked out at the water, the moon shimmering across the water. The reflection of the moon was distorted from the water. A girl had come up and sat next to him, on the bench. She sat there in silence and had just stared out at the water. After a long time she had spoken. “How are you feeling?” She asks, her voice light and sweet. “Good.” He had responded, his voice deep and smooth. “It's just been tough.” She nods and turns to look at him, for the first time since she sat down. “I understand, I know it can be hard.” She says softly and reaches out a delicate hand and rests it in his knee. “No! You don't understand!” He bursts out at her. “You could never possibly understand what I'm going through!” He seats her hand off of his knee and stands up. He walks away without looking back. He left her then and there, on that cold December night, sitting on that small wooden bench and looking after him. He left her there and never returned.
Wreck of the Costa Concordia RESEARCHED BY: Jackson Grant
Thirty-‐two people died after the Costa Concordia cruise ship ran aground with more than 4,000 passengers and crew on 13 January 2012, only hours after leaving the Italian port of Civitavecchia.
• The Costa Concordia left the Italian port of Civitavecchia at 19:18. The ship was heading out on a week-‐long cruise around the Mediterranean with 3,206 passengers and 1,023 crew onboard. As it made its way north-‐west along the Italian coastline, Captain Francesco Schettino ordered the ship to be steered close to the island of Giglio.
• Nearing Giglio just after 21.30, the captain gave the helmsman coordinates, followed by the warning "otherwise we go on the rocks."
• Minutes later, at 21:45, the Costa Concordia hit a rocky outcrop while travelling at around 16 knots. The ship was holed on the left-‐hand side, started taking on water and began to tilt. Engine rooms were flooded and power was lost. The crew struggled to assess the situation and relayed incomplete information to the Italian authorities.
• At 21:52 the chief engineer and electrical officer tried and failed to start the ship's emergency diesel generator.Shortly afterwards, passengers were told that the ship was suffering a "blackout", but that the situation was under control. The same information was given to the harbour master at Civitavecchia.
• Positioning data shows that the Costa Concordia turned and began to drift back towards the island's port soon after 22:00 due to, investigators say, a combination of the wind and the rudder positioned to starboard (right). As it drifted, the ship then began to list in the opposite direction, possibly caused by water in the damaged hull rushing to the far side during the turn.
• At 22:12, the coastguard called the ship to say passengers were reporting problems to the local police, but the captain replied: "We have a blackout and we are checking the conditions on board.
• At 22:22 the captain gave orders to tell the coastguard that they had had a "failure" and needed help from tug boats. The radio operator did this and added that all the passengers had been given life jackets, none was injured and there was a gash in the left side of the ship.
• At 22:33 the general emergency alarm was raised and passengers told to go to muster

Does Doodling Help You Learn? BY: Charlie Grimes
Most people wonder if doodling helps you learn. Most teachers won’t accept assignments that are covered in drawings. However, for some people, drawing does help you learn because it can take your mind off stress and things like that.

Costa Concordia (continued from page 3)
• By 22:48 the ship had settled on the rocky sea bed, tilted by more than 30 degrees. • The captain finally gave the order to abandon ship at at 22:54. • Most passengers escaped in lifeboats, but evacuation efforts were hampered by the angle of the tilting
ship. The coastguard launched boats and helicopters to carry stranded passengers to safety. • At 23:19 Captain Schettino abandoned the bridge, leaving the second master to co-‐ordinate the
evacuation. • However by 23:32 the second master also left the bridge. Around 300 passengers and some crew were still
on board. • At midnight dozens of passengers remained, many clinging to the exposed side of the ship. • In a conversation recorded at 00:42, a coastguard commander ordered the captain to get back on board.
He did not, and went ashore. The rescue continued over the weekend, with the ship's safety officer, Marrico Giampietroni, being discovered and evacuated with a broken leg at 12:00 on Sunday. A South Korean couple were also rescued.
• Capt Schettino was arrested and later went on trial, charged with multiple counts of manslaughter and abandoning ship. He admitted making a navigational error, and told investigators he had "ordered the turn too late" as the ship sailed close to the island. The ship's owners, Costa Cruises, said the captain had made an "unapproved, unauthorized" deviation in course, sailing too close to the island in order to show the ship to locals.
Crash investigation
Automatic tracking systems show the route of the Costa Concordia until it ran aground on 13 January. Data from 14 August 2011 show the ship followed a similar course close to the shoreline, according to Lloyd's List Intelligence. On 6 January 2012, it passed through the same strait but sailed much further from the island. Divers searched the ship as it rested on the seabed in about 20m of water. The operation had to be suspended a number of times as the ship shifted position. The sea floor eventually drops to about 100m.The Dutch salvage firm Smit brought a barge alongside the ship and divers installed external tanks to collect the diesel. More than 2,200 tonnes of fuel was eventually extracted, but the engineers were unable to remove all of it from some of the most inaccessible tanks.
