    Rhodesian Forces Bush War Roll of Honour

    Aaron, Christopher Jele BCR (Post), L/Cpl, Sec 2i/c, 3 Grp, Selous Scouts, died from

    wounds received in action, Operation Petal, Botswana. His BCR citation states that his

    patrol encountered a group of six CTs, capturing four. Another was shot and killed. The

    remaining one tried to throw a grenade at the Scouts and Jele, with no regard for his

    own safety, tackled the CT and stabbed him to death with his bayonet. 16th April, 1979.

    Abrahams, Edwin David (aged 30), Acting Sergeant, 1st Battalion, Rhodesia Defence

    Regiment, died in a vehicle accident on Ardbennie Road, Salisbury when on active

    service. 23rd October 1975.

    Abrahams, Henry James, Corporal, Tenth Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, was killed by a

    landmine, 9th April 1976.

    Abrahams, Ian D., Private, First Battalion, Rhodesia Defence Regiment, died on active

    service. 3rd December 1979.

    Abudu, Ahmed (aged 19), Private, 3 Reserve Holding Unit, was killed by gunshot in a CT

    attack at night on their camp just south of the BSAP post in Kanyemba, Sipolilo, Op

    Hurricane. Died with 5 members of RDR. 13 September 1976.

    Adams, David (aged 28), Private, RHU, Rhodesia Defence Regiment, was killed by a

    landmine. 3 October 1977.

    Addams, Ernest C. (aged 45), Major, Headquarters 2 Brigade, was killed by a CT hiding

    in a tree when deployed with Major Peter Burford's D Company, First Battalion Rhodesian

    African Rifles, near Madziwa, 14 August 1974.

    Ainslie, Michael Mike John Forbes (aged 28), Major, A Company, First Battalion,

    Rhodesian African Rifles, was killed in a helicopter by ground fire, while commanding a

    Fire Force action, Ngarwe TTL, Mtoko, Op Huricane. The same bullet that ended Mikes

    life also hit the K-car commander; pilot Perry Childs, in the leg. After Mike had been

    casevaced, Perry continued flying the K-car until the contact was over. 27 March 1976.

    Airey, Walter Richard (aged 23), Air Sub Lt (Navigator) and Air Sub Lt Goddard, both of

    No. 5 Sqn, RhAF, were killed in an air accident while flying a Canberra B2, Msengedzi

    River, near Macombe in Mozambique. They were carrying out a low-level bombing attack

    north of the border in the Macombe area. It was armed with 96 x 20lb fragmentation

    bombs. It was presumed that one of the 20lb frag bombs had hit another that was

    armed and that this resulted in a chain reaction. 4 April 1974.

    Alegra, J.C.C., Lance Corporal, Eighth Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, killed in action, 23

    May 1979.

    Alexander, Ronald Eugene Butch (aged 24), Corporal, 2 Commando, First Battalion,

    Rhodesian Light Infantry, died of gunshot wounds in Mozambique during an attack on a

    ZANLA camp at Rambanayi. Butch jumped into the command bunker occupied by the

    enemy when he was shot and killed. 16th December 1976.

    Alexander, William Robert (aged 32), Rifleman, Ninth Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment,

    was killed by a gunshot wound in an ambush near Filabusi. 5th February 1977.

    Ali, Mafiyo Gibson (aged 34), Detective Constable, Special Branch, British South Africa

    Police was killed in an ambush with PATU in Belingwe TTL. 23rd December 1976.

    Alibaba, Mahomed, Private, Rhodesia Defence Regiment, was murdered by CTs in the

    Op Grapple (Midlands) Area, 4th January 1978.

    Allan, B. J. F., Rifleman, Depot, Rhodesia Regiment, killed on active service, in a vehicle

    accident, 26 February 1970.

    Allan, Ian (aged 52), Officer, Dentist, Rhodesian Army Medical Corps, died from a heart

    attack on active service. 23rd October 1969.

    Allen, Patrick David (25), Section Officer, D Troop, Support Unit, British South Africa

    Police, in a road trafic accident in Salisbury. 9th September 1977.

    Allen, Peter David (21), Uniform, Patrol Officer, British South Africa Police, died from an

    accidental gunshot wound to the head at Lomagundi district headquarters in Sinoia. 2nd

    July 1976.

    Alpium, Jose J. G. (aged 21), Rifleman, Mortar Platoon, C Company, Ninth Battalion,

    The Rhodesia Regiment, was killed in a vehicle ambush when leaving Vila Salazar, Op

    Repulse, at the end of a call-up. The ambush was initiated with an RPG rocket that

    struck the cab, killing the driver, Rfn Colin Murray, and Sgt Andrew Berrington. Jose

    Alpium was shot in the chest as he was debussing and died an hour later. 1st February

    1978

    Anasi, Ignasio Mugani, Private, First Battalion, Rhodesian African Rifles, was killed by a

    gunshot wound in a contact on Operation Teak south of the Victoria Falls. 22nd January

    1970.

    Andrews, Frederick Henry (aged 42), Field Reservist, Field Reserve, British South Africa

    Police, was killed in a vehicle accident. 11th April, 1978.

    Andrews, R.S., Flight Sergeant, Rhodesian Air Force, killed in action, in a Trojan

    aircraft, R3427, when shot down by a SAM7 in Mozambique near Rushinga, 20 April

    1974.

    Androuliakos, Leonidas, Corporal, BCR, Ninth Battalion, the Rhodesia Regiment, killed

    in action at TM 119599 in the Repulse area while assisting a Three Commando Fire Force

    action, 28 March 1978.

    Annandale, Donald Don (aged 32), Flight Lieutenant, Rhodesian Air Force, died after

    an air accident whilst flying in a South African Police Cessna 185 No. 734 at Kutanga

    Range near Que Que. Lt J. H. van Heerden, SAP, the pilot, was killed. The pilot tried to

    perform an illegal low-level barrel roll but hit the ground. Annandale survived the initial

    crash but the vehicle being used to take him to hospital also crashed. He was then taken

    by a passing motorist to Que Que Hospital where he died two days later. 7th January

    1969. RhAF ROH.

    Anstruther, Robert David Rob (aged 26), Lance Corporal, 10th Battalion, Rhodesia

    Regiment, died in a vehicle accident on a low level bridge near Kemphaven Farm, Mt

    Darwin. 23rd October 1973.

    Arendse, M., Private, Second Battalion, Rhodesia Defence Regiment, killed in action, 12

    September 1979.

    Argent, H.W.A., Rifleman, First Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, killed on active service, in

    a shooting accident, 17 March 1977.

    Aristotelous, Aristo, Lance Corporal, killed in action, 3 September 1978.

    Armstrong, David Dave MSM, (aged 46), Field Reservist, Field Reserve, British South

    Africa Police, in a vehicle accident near Ft Victoria in which Inspector Pratt, FR Armstrong

    and Moss died. 22nd October 1977.

    Armstrong, Phillip John (aged 25), Rifleman, 1st Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, killed by

    a gunshot wound in a contact in the Mtoko area, 27th October 1976.

    Artford, Dube, District Assistant, Internal Affairs, killed in action, Nuanetsi 31 December

    1976.

    Ash, Neil Thomas (aged 45), Field Reservist, Field Reserve, British South Africa Police,

    was killed in a landmine detonation which had caused him to be thrown out of his vehicle

    and under the wheels. 27th October 1977.

    Ashara, Katungura, Field Reservist, Field Reserve, British South Africa Police, murdered

    in Nyamapanda while on leave. 15th August 1979.

    Ashburner, Sidney, Corporal (28), 2nd Battalion, RDR, kiiled in action in a landmine

    explosion, 7 July 1978.

    Ashby, Gavin Warwick, Sapper, Rhodesian Corps of Engineers killed in action, 20 March

    1978.

    Austen, Ronald Rhodes Walter, Corporal, Tenth Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, killed on

    active service, in a shooting accident, 31 August 1976.

    Ashworth, Robert Randall, Field Reservist, Police Reserve, British South Africa Police,

    killed by a passing vehicle whilst on road block duty in Salisbury, Salops. 16th October

    1977.

    Aves, Michael Arthur (aged 19), Trooper, 1 Cdo, 1st Bn, RLI, was killed from a gunshot

    wound in a vehicle ambush, Dotito, Mt Darwin. 31st October 1974.

    Attwell, Guy, Gunner (aged 19), Regular, 1st Field Regiment, Rhodesian Artillery, died

    on active service in a vehicle accident, Kariba. On that Sunday, elements of the Artillery

    had been playing a football match against a team from the RAR. Guy had left in a

    Unimog to buy cold drinks for the players when he lost control around a sharp bend, his

    vehicle plunging into a steep ravine. His military funeral was held at Warren Hills

    Cemetery, Salisbury.

    Bailey, Geoffrey Paul (aged 18), Trooper, 1st Battalion, Rhodesia Light Infantry, died in

    a motor bike accident at the 10 mile peg on the New Sarum Road, Salisbury. 29th

    October 1966.

    Bain, Enold, Private, 1st Battalion, RDR, was murdered by CTs in the Op Grapple area.

    4th January 1978.

    Bain, Tazewil Taz G. (26), Temporary WO2, Second Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment,

    killed in action by a gunshot wound, near Rushinga, 19 July 1975.

    Bakayi, ADF Driver, Internal Affairs, murdered by CTs, 20 September 1978.

    Baker, Bruce Macley (aged 23), Patrol Officer, British South Africa Police, was killed with

    Cst Tavengwa in an ambush in Ngarwe TTL after a reliable source had turned and

    advised ZANLA about their pending visit. 8th February 1976.

    Baker, Donald Arthur (aged 58), Field Reservist, Field Reserve, British South Africa

    Police, was killed from landmine injuries in a follow-up on Far Vista Farm, Mtoko. 18th

    August 1979.

    Balenkani, C., Rifleman, Eighth Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, killed in action, 27

    November 1979. He was a pilot in WWII, was shot down over the North Sea then

    captured.

    Banda, Wilson (aged 19), Constable, India Troop, Support Unit, British South Africa

    Police, died from wounds sustained in a night contact in Mangwende TTL. 26th March

    1978.

    Banga, David (aged 23), Constable, Uniform, British South Africa Police, was killed by

    gunfire from the north bank whilst on boat patrol on the Zambezi River near Chirundu.

    5th May 1974.

    Banga, Thomas, Lance Corporal, Second Battalion, Rhodesian African Rifles, killed in

    action, 4th October 1977.

    Banks, Gary Thomas, Trooper, Support Commando, First Battalion, Rhodesian Light

    Infantry, died from cerebral malaria, contracted during an external operation in Zambia.

    28th December 1979.

    Barbage, Nicholas Paul, Private, 2 Protection Company, RHU, Rhodesia Defence

    Regiment, died of natural causes. 10th October, 1977.

    Barber, Nicholas Edward Swannell, Lance Corporal, C Sqn, Special Air Service, was

    killed with Tpr MacMillan in an accidental explosion whilst laying a landmine during Op

    Inhibit in the Mapai area of the Gaza Province of Mozambique. 7th February 1979.

    Barclay, David Dave I. F. (20), Rifleman, Support Commando, First Battalion,

    Rhodesian Light Infantry, was killed in a contact near Inyazura, Op Thrasher. Elements

    of Fire Force had been flown in by helicopter to engage a ZANLA position in a granite

    outcrop. 7th July 1977.

    Barnabas, Richard, Rifleman, killed in action, 11 May 1979.

    Barnett, P.A., Sqn Ldr, Rhodesian Air Force, killed on active service, in an air accident,

    when the Dakota, R7034, he was flying hit an overhead wire after taking off from Buffalo

    Range and while flying low, 6 January 1977.

    Barnett, William Nigel, Sapper, Rhodesian Corps of Engineers, killed in action in an

    ambush, 6 July 1979.

    Barnfield, John (aged 45), Corporal. Regular Army. Killed on active service, vehicle

    accident. 6 August 1976

    Barry, Hamilton John, Trooper, B Sqn, Special Air Service, was killed by friendly fire.

    18th October 1978.

    Bartlett, Malcolm Leslie (aged 19), Special Constable, Special Reserve, British South

    Africa Police, was killed in an attack in the Chinamora TTL, just north of Enterprise.

    Malcolm was killed at first light when a camp in a re-entrant was attacked. 31st August

    1979.

    Barton, R.A., Rifleman, Fourth Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, killed in action, 6 April

    1977.

    Bashford, David Peter (aged 30), Field Reservist, British South Africa Police, died from

    injuries received in a vehicle accident. Field Reservists Bashford, Lilford and Bathurst

    were travelling in a police vehicle north of Karoi when they collided with a pantechnicon.

    FR Bathurst also died at the scene and FR Lilford died two weeks later. 24th December

    1976.

    Batchelor, Francis, Sergeant, Regular, unit unknown, died on active service. June 1979.

    Bate, Patrick Paddy Michael Bate, Air Lt Pilot, No 7 Sqn RhAF, KOAS with Major Bruce

    Snelgar and Flt Sgt Gary Carter in an air accident when their Alouette III hit power lines

    near Lake Alexander, Umtali area, Op Thrasher. They were conducting a diversionary

    Fire Force exercise to draw attention away from the massing of troops and aircraft for

    the launch of Op Miracle against the ZANLA camps at New Chimoio in Mozambique, 26

    September 1979.

    Bates, Douglas Doug Bates (aged 24), NS Sapper, 3 Sqn RhE, was killed from gunshot

    wounds in a vehicle ambush whilst clearing roads in the Honde Valley, Op Thrasher. 15th

    June 1976.

    Bathhurst, Arnold (aged 34), Field Reservist, Field Reserve, British South Africa Police,

    died from injuries received in a vehicle accident. FR Bashford, Lilford and Bathurst were

    travelling in a police vehicle north of Karoi when they collided with a pantechnicon. FR

    Bashford also died at the scene and FR Lilford died two weeks later. 24th December

    1976.

    Turmoil attack on ZIPRA camp at Kavalamanja, Zambia, 6th March 1978.

    Battershill, Peter John, Junior Commandant, Guard Force, killed in action, 27 March

    1979.

    Bayayi, B., Field Reservist, PATU, British South Africa Police, was killed in a contact. 13th

    November 1976.

    Bazara, Y., Sapper, Seven Squadron, Rhodesian Corps of Engineers, killed in action, 22

    November 1979.

    Beamish, Arthur C., Captain, Fifth Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, murdered by CTs on

    his farm in the Horseshoe Block, Sipolilo, Op Hurricane, whilst in between call-up with

    5RR, 2nd November 1978. Arthur and Raymond are brothers.

    Beamish, Raymond, Sergeant, 1st Field Regt, Rhodesian Army, died by a gunshot

    wound sustained in a contact in the Op Grapple area. Ray was attending a course, at

    Gwelo, when the course was called out to attend to a commotion at a Gokwe Phumo re

    Vanhu camp. He was subsequently killed in the fighting against Pfumo re Vanhu. 20th

    July 1979. Arthur and Raymond are brothers.

    Beattie, Dennis Campbell, Rifleman, 3 RHU, Rhodesia Defence Regiment, died on active

    service, 12th October 1977.

    Bebington, Edwin John (22), Field Reservist, Field Reserve, British South Africa Police,

    was killed was another two policemen in a vehicle ambush in the Inyanga area. 29th July

    1977.

    Becking, Gideon Edward, Rifleman, Fourth Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, killed in

    action, 25 April 1979.

    Beech, Robert, Sergeant, SADF, Killed in action, Sengwe TTL, 18 August 1982.

    Belstead, Christopher John (19), Rifleman, Tenth Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, died of

    wounds received in action, 16 December 1979.

    Belstead, Herbert Beef F. (27), Sergeant, Rhodesian Air Force, killed in action, in his

    Alouette III when it was hit by ground fire in Matibi 2 TTL, Chiredzi, 1 September 1976.

    Benard, Sankley, Guard, Guard Force, killed in action, 24 July 1979.

    Benjamin, F., Acting Lance Corporal, Two Protection Company, killed on active service,

    in a shooting accident, 24 April 1975.

    Bennett, Hart Thomas (aged 23), Officer, 1st Battalion, Rhodesia African Rifles, died in

    a vehicle accident on the Salisbury/Bulawayo road. 20th November, 1970. A South

    African.

    Bennett, Ismael (aged 21), Corporal, 4 Protection Company, Rhodesia Defence

    Regiment, died in the Princess Margaret Hospital as a result of an accident. 21st April

    1976.

    Bennett, Raynor Ray Laurence (aged 35), WO2, attached School of Infantry, RLI, died

    on active service. 1st May 1977.

    Bento, Edward James, Rifleman, C Company, 10th Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, was

    killed in a shooting accident by his stick commander when he went to relieve himself

    after the stick had taken up all-round positions during the night. 6th November 1977.

    Bepe, Agrippa District Assistant, Internal Affairs, killed in action, in Wankie, 17

    November 1976.

    Berejena, Edward (aged 24), Constable, Q Troop, Support Unit, British South Africa

    Police, died in a vehicle accident in the operational area. 14 January 1978.

    Berman, Harry Anthony MFC Ops (Post), Private, 1st Battalion, RDR killed in action.

    Despite his mortal injuries from the initial rocket hit, Harry saved many lives by driving

    the vehicle through the ambush position. 26th February 1978.

    Berrington, Andrew Arthur, Sergeant, Mortar Platoon, C Company, Ninth Battalion, The

    Betoman, Private, One Psychological Operations Unit, killed in action, 28 March 1980.

    Betts, Martin DArcy, Rifleman, 2 Commando, First Battalion, Rhodesian Light Infantry,

    was killed in a contact during a sweep at Nyamatombe Hill, Maramba TTL, Mrewa

    district. 13th December 1977.

    Bhebhe, Agrippa (aged 23), District Security Assistant, Keep Protection, Internal Affairs,

    died from wounds and burns in Ndhlovu Camp, Wankie with DSA Bhebhe, Chimere,

    Moyo, Ndebele and Nyoni. 17th November 1976.

    Bhere, Eriazere, Private, Second Battalion, Rhodesian African Rifles, killed 8 September

    1978.

    Bickle, A.C., Second Lieutenant, First Battalion, Rhodesian African Rifes, killed in action,

    8 December 1977.

    Bicknell, Kevin Howard, Sergeant, NS Intake 155, (Indep) Coy, RAR, died of gunshot

    wounds sustained in a shooting incident at the Essexvale Battle Camp, Op Tangent.

    Upon returning from R&R, twenty members of this Company had drawn rifles and live

    ammunition for retraining purposes. They stripped their weapons for cleaning prior to

    moving to the rifle range for firing practice. Pte Robert Nyamini Mapfumo suddenly

    cocked his rifle and opened fire on automatic at his fellow soldiers. As Mapfumo's 20-

    round magazine emptied, and before he could replace it with a fully charged one,

    Privates Mawonda and Zevezene overpowered and disarmed him. Tragically though, four

    lay dead - Sgt Bicknell, L/Cpl Randall, Pte Tshuma, and L/Cpl Wall and four were

    seriously wounded. In spite of claiming insanity, Mapfumo was found guilty of murder in

    the High Court in Bulawayo, and sentenced to death. 10th April 1978.

    Biederman, Richard Dick Louis (aged 26), Sergeant, C Sqn, Special Air Service, was

    killed in an accidental shooting in Mozambique. SAS operators were on covert operations

    aimed at disrupting ZANLA and FRELIMO logistical lines in the Gaza Province when the

    accident, involving another SAS patrol, occurred. He was an American national. 6th

    December 1977.

    Billing, David Anthony Michael (aged 34), Corporal, Eighth Battalion, Rhodesia

    Regiment, was killed bya gunshot wound on the Mukumbura Road, Mt Darwin, Op

    Hurricane. 14th February 1976.

    Binga, Bernard, Sapper, 1 Squadron, Rhodesian Corps of Engineers, died in an

    accidental explosion with seven engineers - Staff Sgt Tobias, Sgt Moriarty, L/Cpl Gonye,

    Spr Binga, Dube, Majuta and Nyathi - at Victoria Falls when AP mines were being loaded

    from underground storage. 5th January 1979.

    Binks, Reginald Reggie Alan Japie (aged 17), Trooper, Training Troop, First Battalion,

    Rhodesian Light Infantry, died from gunshot wounds sustained in the Maninga area,

    Urungwe District, during Op Cauldron. Following an initial firefight, and whilst conducting

    a sweep of the area, a lone CT, Sly Masurka, concealed in thick bush, opened fire with

    an RPD, killing two troopers in Training Troop. 26th March 1968.

    Bint, F.W.E., Rifleman, Ninth Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, killed in action by a gunshot

    wound, on in a vehicle ambush, 12 May 1976.

    Birkett, Harold Harry (aged 41), WO1 (RSM), Base Grp, 1st Bn RLI, att 1RAR, died in

    Sinoia Hospital from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident. 23rd March 1973.

    Bitirinyu, Zuzeyo, Field Reservist, Field Reserve, British South Africa Police, was killed

    with FR Magirazi in a landmine clearing exercise in the Headlands area. 22rd October

    1978.

    Black, R.A., Rifleman, Second Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, killed in action by a

    gunshot wound, in an ambush, 6 April 1976.

    Blackadder-Wilson, Peter, Sapper, Rhodesian Corps of Engineers, killed in action in a

    vehicle ambush, 8th July 1979.

    Blignaut, P.W., Rifleman, Ninth Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, killed in action, in a

    vehicle ambush, 12 May 1976.

    Blundell, L.T., Rifleman, Depot Rhodesia Regiment, killed on active service, 24 February

    1970.

    Bobo, Benson, District Assistant, Internal Affairs, died on active service. 15th July 1978.

    Boer, James William (aged 28), Private, 1st Battalion, RDR, was killed. 2nd October 1978.

    Bokosha, Tafirenyika, District Assistant, Internal Affairs, murdered by terrorists, 4 April

    1978.

    Bolton, Derek, Vedette Senior Warrant Officer, died on active service from cerebal

    malaria contracted on a training camp in the Shamva area, 2 June 1979.

    Bornman, H.J., Rifleman, Second Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, shot at Binga by a

    sentry after failing to answer a challenge, 4 December 1970.

    Bosch, Michael Mike (26), Rifleman, D Company, 6th Battalion, RR, killed in action by a

    mortar bomb in the Mtetengwe TTL, north of Beitbridge. 2 July 1977.

    Boschin, Ugo, Rifleman, Ninth Battalion, the Rhodesia Regiment, killed in action at TM

    Bouch, Robert Albert Bob MCM (Post) (aged 33), WO2, C Sqn SAS, was killed in an

    accidental explosion at the Zambezi River, near Chirundu. The team was preparing the

    Klepper canoes when some explosives detonated prematurely. In the blast, WO2 Bob

    Bouch, Colour Sergeant Mick Cahill and Superindependent John Wickenden were killed

    instantly, with Colour Sergeant Geordie Wright dying in Dudley Coventry's arms minutes

    later, the latter surviving the blast with perforated eardrums. 12th October 1966.

    accident, flying Provost T52 R6309 near Gwelo, 19 June 1975.

    Infantry, was killed at Ntondongwe fly gate area, just north of the boundary of the Doma

    Safari area, Sipolilo district, during Op Birch in a contact with ZAPU which resulted after

    following spoor for three days. 22nd January 1970.

    Bradley, A., Corporal, HQ (Mash) killed on active service, in an air accident, when the

    Dakota, R7034, he was flying in hit an overhead wire while flying low after taking off

    from Buffalo Range. 6th January 1977.

    Bramford, Alexander Alex James (35), Field Reservist, attached to Special Branch,

    British South Africa Police, killed in action by a gunshot wound in an ambush in Maranke

    TTL on 10th March 1977.

    Brandt, Gary, Trooper, First Battalion, Rhodesian Light Infantry, died whilst returning to

    barracks, 5th December 1979.

    Bredenkamp, Machiel Johan (aged 22), Lance Corporal, 4th Battalion, Rhodesia

    Regiment, died in Umtali Hospital from a shrapnel wound to the head from a FRELIMO

    and ZANLA mortar attack on the base camp at Clydesdale, in the Burma Valley, Zimunya

    TTL. WO2 Clipston, Sergeant Lunderstedt, Lance Corporal Bredenkamp and Rifleman

    Klew were victims from the attack and Rifleman Halberstadt was killed in a contact

    during the follow up on the same day. 8th August 1976.

    Brewer, Robert Montague Monty (27), Rifleman, Eighth Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment,

    killed in action in an ambush in Maranka TTL south of Umtali, 11th March 1977.

    Breza, Joseph (aged 40), Constable, Uniform, British South Africa Police, murdered by

    CTs in the Lupane District. 3rd August, 1978.

    Briel, Jacobus Alwyn, Trooper, 1 Cdo, First Battalion, Rhodesian Light Infantry, was

    killed at Mapai in Mozambique during Operation Uric. Fourteen members of the Security

    Forces and three members of the South African Air Force tragically lost their lives when

    Puma 164 was shot down by an RPG7 rocket. The SADF helicopter, call-sign Hotel 4, was

    hit behind the pilot's seat, causing it to crash and burst into flames. 6th September 1979.

    formidable bush skills.The contact against a large group of ZIPRA lasted for a long time,

    in which Lt Willie Loxton was also killed. 15th September 1979.

    Burrell, Bruce (aged 19), Second Lieutenant, C Squadron, Special Air Service, was killed

    as a result of an anti-personnel mine explosion whilst returning from a successful

    combined assault on the ZANLA base at Rambanayi, Manica Province, Mozambique. As

    members of the ground troops were walking out, 2Lt Bruce Burrell stepped on a

    suspected boosted AP mine, the explosion killing both him and Tpr Enslin van Staden.

    Cahill, Michael Patrick Mick MCM (Post) (aged 25), Colour Sergeant, C Squadron,

    Special Air Service, was killed in an accidental explosion at the Zambezi River, near

    Calder, Basil Leonard (aged 39), Field Reservist, Field Reserve, British South Africa

    Police, was killed by a landmine. He and FR Gough had been sent to protect the farm

    homestead on Bar G Ranch on the Bubi River and the Lion and Elephant Motel, near

    Rutenga, Op Repulse. On the night of 07th January, they successfully beat off a terrorist

    attack on the homestead. The following morning, the vehicle they were travelling in

    struck a landmine, killing both men. The farmer, Stephen Grobler, who was driving the

    vehicle survived the blast but lost both his legs. Basil was Headmaster at Houghton Park

    School and on call-up. 8th January 1977.

    November 1978.

    Callow, William Bill John PMM (aged 54), Senior Commissioner , Victoria, Uniform,

    British South Africa Police, died from heart failure in Ft Victoria Hospital. During WWII

    he served with the Royal Navy in Coastal Forces, before moving to Rhodesia immediately

    after the war. 15 January 1976.

    Camacho, Anthony Tony George (aged 19), 1 Cdo, 1st Bn RLI, KOAS in a shooting

    accident. The vehicle he was travelling in that night was en route back to Grand Reef

    from Umtali, when one of the other soldiers in the vehicle had an accidental discharge

    with his weapon, killing Anthony. 12 January 1978.

    killed in a vehicle ambush between Nyamaropa and Ruangwe, Op Thrasher. Sgt Kelly,

    Cpl Carroll and PO Liebermann died. 4th June 1978.

    Carter, Gary Ronald Carter, Flt Sgt - Technician/Gunner, No 7 Sqn RhAF, KOAS with

    Major Bruce Snelgar and Air Lt Paddy Bate in an air accident when their Alouette III hit

    power lines near Lake Alexander, Umtali area, Op Thrasher. They were conducting a

    diversionary Fire Force exercise to draw attention away from the massing of troops and

    aircraft for the launch of Op Miracle against the ZANLA camps at New Chimoio in

    Mozambique. 26 September 1979.

    Cary, James Jim B. (aged 24), Sergeant, Support Group, First Battalion, Rhodesian

    Light Infantry, shot accidentally on the Zambezi River at Kanyemba. At night, after

    investigating a noise, he failed to identify himself on returning to his position and was

    shot in the chest. 29th January 1969.

    Casal, Carlos Alberto de Arjuajo Patrick (aged 20), Rifleman, 4 Trp, 1 Cdo, 1st Bn RLI,

    was killed by a gunshot wound to the throat, Seguranca, Tete Province, Mozambique. A

    large number of ZANLA were accounted for when a camp was overrun but Carlos was

    shot on returning by a CT with a PPSH sub-machine gun. 24th October 1973.

    Caswell, Peter, Temporary Captain, Rhodesian Army Education Corps, was travelling in

    a Land Rover on the outskirts of Ft Victoria on the Birchenough Bridge Road, but did not

    see a train coming from the left. He was thrown from his vehicle and his neck was

    broken. 1st December 1978.

    Celestino, B., Private, First Battalion, Rhodesian African Rifles, killed in action by a

    gunshot wound, 3 August 1975.

    Cerfe, Robert Bob Hugh, Corporal, 3 (Independent Company), RAR, was killed in

    Nyamaropa when only one from the stick of four managed to escape after being overrun

    by a large group of CTs. 18th March 1978.

    Chait, Andrew Andy (aged 27) MLM (Post), C Sqn, Sergeant, C Squadron, Special Air

    Service, was killed at Chioco, Tete Province, Mozambique. Three SAS assault teams,

    made up of members of A and B Troops, led by Sergeants Andy Chait, Iain Bowen and

    Captain Grahame Wilson, launched an attack on a ZANLA and Frelimo Camp at Chioco.

    As they moved into the garrison town at first light, they found the enemy in trenches

    and bunkers. Whilst Sgt Andy Chait was preparing to receive a grenade from one of his

    team, to use against an enemy RPD (light machine gun) position, a lone terrorist opened

    fire from a trench, killing Andy instantly. Cpl Imre Baka, using the same grenade,

    neutralised the terrorist. 38 CTs were accounted for during the raid. 24th March 1977.

    service, in a vehicle accident, 23 March 1977.

    Clarke, George W. (aged 28), Support Commando, 1st Battalion, RLI, was killed in a

    contact near the Rogogo airfield, east of Mayo, Makoni district, Op Thrasher. Fire Force

    had been deployed but, in the firefight, George was badly wounded. He died in the

    helicopter whilst being casevaced to Mtoko. George was born in Canada and was a

    Vietnam veteran, serving in the Marine Corps, and was decorated twice with the Purple

    Heart. 15th May 1977.

    Clayton, Clifford Thomas Chippy, Sapper, Rhodesian Corps of Engineers, was severely

    injured when the Rhino detonated a boosted landmine in the Ngorima area east of

    Chipinga. Two fence erectors on the back died immediately and Chippy was casevaced

    by air to Umtali that morning but died. 10th March 1978. H Bomford

    Cleland, James Gerard (aged 37), Detective Chief Inspector, CID, British South Africa

    Police, died of cancer in his home at Gwelo, 9th October, 1979.

    Clinton, Vernon (aged 26), Trooper, First Battalion, Rhodesian Light Infantry, died in

    Bindura Hospital from injuries received when an army truck overturned. 8th May 1973.

    Clipston, Maurice Ward Clippie (aged 48), Warrant Officer 2, 4th Battalion, Rhodesia

    Regiment, was killed instantly in a FRELIMO and ZANLA mortar attack on the base camp

    at Clydesdale, in the Burma Valley, Zimunya TTL. WO2 Clipston, Sergeant Lunderstedt,

    Lance Corporal Bredenkamp and Rifleman Klew were victims from the attack and

    Rifleman Halberstadt was killed in a contact during the follow up on the same day. 8th

    August 1976.

    Cloete, J. W., Cst, SAP. KIA died from a gun shot wound to the neck at the SAP base

    Kazakilli near Victoria Falls. 4 October, 1974.

    Cloete, Pieter Jacobus, Field Reservist, British South Africa Police, killed in action, 8

    August 1978.

    Cockroft, Mark Bryan (aged 20), Lance Corporal, OPA, 1st Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment,

    died from multiple gunshot wounds in a vehicle ambush, Mazarabani, Centenary, Op

    Hurricane. Cpl Davidson, L/Cpl Cockroft and Rfn Forbes (all OPA) and Private Matangira,

    RhASC, were killed in the same incident. 23 April 1973.

    Coey, John Alan (aged 24), Corporal, 2 Commando, 1st Battalion, Rhodesia Light

    Infantry, was killed by a gunshot wound, Masoso TTL, near Rushinga, Op Hurricane. As a

    medic, John was sent into the riverbed to attend to two injured soldiers when he was

    also shot and killed. Ex SAS, the unit he joined the RLI and is originally from Colombus,

    Ohio. 19th July 1975.

    Coghill, A.R., Lance Corporal, 4 Independent Company, Rhodesia Regiment, killed on

    active service, in a vehicle accident, 13 November 1976.

    Coleman, Andrew Roy Andy (aged 20), Patrol Officer, Uniform, PATU, British South

    Collcutt, James Edwin Field Reservist, British South Africa Police, killed on active

    Collett, Jeffrey Donald Jeff, Lance Corporal, C Squadron, Special Air Service, was

    killed on Op Gatling against the ZIPRA Camp at Mkushi, Zambia. 19th October 1978.

    Collocott, B., Flight Lieutenant, Rhodesian Air Force, killed in action, taking off at Mapai

    during Operation Aztec in a Dakota when hit by small arms fire, the starboard engine

    was hit by an RPG7 rocket, 30 May 1977.

    Colman, Aidan James, Trooper, First Battalion, Rhodesian Light Infantry, was killed at

    Mapai in Mozambique during Operation Uric. Fourteen members of the Security Forces

    and three members of the South African Air Force tragically lost their lives when Puma

    164 was shot down by an RPG7 rocket. The SADF helicopter, call-sign Hotel 4, was hit

    behind the pilot's seat, causing it to crash and burst into flames. 6th September 1979.

    Conlon, Vincent John (aged 21), Patrol Officer, Uniform, British South Africa Police, was

    killed in an ambush in Wedza, Op Thrasher. 13 January 1979.

    Conrad, M., Constable, British South Africa Police, killed on active service, murdered on

    leave by terrorists, 12 November 1976.

    Conway, J BCR (Post), Corporal, C Squadron, Special Air Service, died in a vehicle

    accident. 23rd October 1970.

    Cook, Richard George, Lance Corporal, Selous Scouts, was killed in a convoy ambush in

    the Nyajena TTL, near Ft Victoria, Op Repulse. In November 1976, one of the unit's most

    highly decorated soldiers, Sgt Head Wuranda, SCR BCR, was abducted by CTs whilst he

    was on leave at home in the Nyajena TTL. Head was never seen again, but tragically it

    was discovered that it was his own father who sold him out to the CTs, and since then,

    Head's wife was being treated very badly in their home village. CO Lt Col Ron Reid-Daly

    then made the decision to uplift Head's wife from the Nyajena to home her in the

    Inkomo Barracks married quarters. A party of 12 Selous Scouts, led by the RSM, left in

    two heavily armed vehicles to carry out the operation. Early the following afternoon,

    they left Head's home, having picked up his wife and her belongings. There was only one

    access road, the two vehicles drove into a well-sited ZANLA ambush at 16:10hrs, and in

    the heavy cross-fire, L/Cpl Richard Cook, Sgt Chiutsi Ringisayi, Tpr Martin Rungwe and

    Tpr John Whitfield were killed. Tpr Keith Moss died of his wounds en route to Ft Victoria

    Hospital. Sgt Patrick Zambarah had also been injured and died eleven days later. 5th

    February 1978.

    Cooksley, C.A.C., Gunner, First Field Regiment, Rhodesian Artillery, killed on active

    service, in a vehicle accident, 4 June 1973.

    Cookson, Doug J. (aged 20), Lance Corporal, 1 Commando, First Battalion, Rhodesian

    Light Infantry, was killed from gunshot wounds in a contact, Chibara Hills, Mt Darwin, Op

    Hurricane. Four soldiers were killed on that day and 1 Commando named their pub The

    28th in memory of the three that they lost. 28th February 1976.

    Coom, Nicholas John, L/Cpl, 6th Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, died on active service. 4th

    November 1977.

    Cordell, David, Sergeant, Rhodesian Intelligence Corps, died on active service in a

    grenade accident, 21 July 1978.

    Cosmas, Corporal, First Battalion, Rhodesian African Rifles, killed in action by a gunshot

    wound in a contact, 23 August 1967.

    Cotton, Christopher Chris Reginald Neville (aged 25), Section Officer, E Troop, Support

    Unit, British South Africa Police, was killed in an ambush in the Gutu district. 27th

    Courtney, Douglas Llewellyn (aged 38), Field Reservist, Field Reserve, Bristish South

    Africa Police, was killed whilst on duty in the Mtoko area. 6th April 1978.

    Courtney, Paul Martin (aged 23), Lieutenant, 4 Troop, 1 Commando, 1st Battalion,

    Rhodesian Light Infantry, was killed in a contact, Op Thrasher. 1 Commando troops were

    deployed against a ZANLA stronghold on a mountain. There was a fleeting contact near a

    very large cave so after encountering heavy automatic fire; Paul called in a Lynx

    airstrike. This, however, was unsuccessful so, Paul launched a frontal attack during

    which he was shot and killed. 24th December 1977.

    Covarr, P.T., Signaller, Rhodesian Signals Corps, Rhodesian Signals Corps, killed on

    active service, in a vehicle accident, 28 March 1970.

    Cowan, Peter John Mosey, Lance Corporal, Mortar Troop, Fifth Battalion, Rhodesia

    Regiment, died in a vehicle ambush in the Makuti area, Urungwe district. 7th February

    1978.

    South Africa, was killed in an ambush whilst on patrol in the Bindura area. 26th January

    Diedericks, Chrisopher Chris, Trooper, First Battalion, Rhodesian Light Infantry, was

    killed from gunshot wounds in a contact, Chibara Hills, Mt Darwin, Op Hurricane. Chris

    was tracking and up front when he was shot. Four soldiers were killed during five

    contacts on that day and 1 Commando named their pub The 28th in memory of the

    three that they lost. 28th February 1976.

    Africa Police, was also deployed as a tracker with PATU, killed on active service or in

    action. 30th October 1978.

    Donaldson, Ian Hylton, Flt Lt, No 5 Sqn, RhAF, was killed in a Canberra B2 R2512 with

    two airmen and Capt Warraker, en route to a ZANLA Base at Madulo Pan, Mozambique,

    when hit by ground fire from Malvernia during Op Manyatela, 12 January 1977.

    Donnelly, Pete. Lance Corporal, is remembered as MAG gunner in 1 and 3 Commando

    but there is no formal record of his passing, First Battalion, Rhodesian Light Infantry.

    was killed by friendly fire from a Vampire FB9 air strike in a combined SAS, RLI and

    RhAf attack on a ZANLA base in the Chimoio area, Mozambique, Op Snoopy. E van der

    Merwe, att SAS, was also killed in the incident. 21st October 1978.

    Donzwa, Petros (aged 21), Constable, Support Unit, British South Africa Police, killed in

    an accidental explosion, 7th December 1978.

    du Plessis, D. Leon, Air Lieutenant, Rhodesian Air Force, killed in action by target

    fixation while attacking a ground target while flying a Lynx. 2 September 1977.

    du Plooy, Johannes Joe Matheus, Capt, 1 Cdo, 1st Bn, RLI, was killed at Mapai in

    Mozambique during Operation Uric. Fourteen members of the Security Forces and three

    members of the South African Air Force tragically lost their lives when Puma 164 was

    shot down by an RPG7 rocket. The SADF helicopter, call-sign Hotel 4, was hit behind the

    pilot's seat, causing it to crash and burst into flames. 6th September 1979.

    du Preez, Cpl Theunis Johannes, Support Group 1 RLI mortar training specialist, 1 Cdo,

    1st Bn RLI, KOAS with Tpr de Campos in a vehicle accident when their 2.5 rolled. 14

    September, 1977.

    du Toit, Andrew Jameson Gus, Second Lieutenant, Three Independent Company,

    Rhodesian African Rifles, killed in a contact in the Inyanga area amongst wattle

    plantations. As Gus was running in the clearing below power pylons he was shot. He died

    in the casevac helicopter. 27th December 1979.

    du Toit, G. H. F., Flight Lieutenant, Rhodesian Air Force, killed in action, when flying an

    Alouette III which was hit by an RPG7 in Mozambique, 28 July 1978.

    Operation Melon in Gaza Province, Mozambique. 11th February 1978.

    Spr Binga, Dube, Majuta and Nyathi - at Victoria Falls when AP mines were being loaded

    from underground storage. 5th January 1979.

    Dube, Paul (aged 22), Constable, Uniform, BSAP, was killed when struck by a vehicle

    whilst on cycle patrol in the Bulawayo suburbs. 11th February 1974.

    aircraft, R3244, when shot down by an SAM7 in Mozambique near Rushinga, 14 April

    1974.

    Dwyer, Stephen Steve M. (aged 27), Trooper, 11 Troop, Three Commando, First

    Battalion, Rhodesian Light Infantry, was killed in a Fireforce deployment west from

    Buffalo Range FAF. Tpr Dwyer was shot in the head when he went to the aid of his stick

    leader Sgt McCall. Steve was a US national with service in Korea. 16th July 1979.

    Dyson, George Herbert (aged 28), Rifleman, Fifth Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, was

    killed by friendly fire. George was part of a stick that had been assigned to all-round

    defence of a broken down military vehicle. That night he had informed one of the new

    conscripts that he was going a few metres away to relieve himself. Sadly, this message

    was not heeded, and he was shot and killed by a member of the stick as he returned to

    their position. 30th January 1978.

    from injuries five days earlier from a vehicle accident on the Banket-Raffingora Road.

    Edmunds, Christopher Bobo, 2 Commando, 1st Battalion, Rhodesian Light Infantry, was

    killed by ground fire whilst being choppered back from Mozambique en route from a

    ZANLA base called Rio, in the south of Mozambique near the Limpopo River during Op

    Aztec. He was sitting the front nead the tech because he was so tall when the helicopter

    came under ground fire. 30th May 1977

    was killed by friendly fire during a sweep in a fire force call-out. 3rd March 1978.

    Elsaesser, W.E. Eike, Trooper, 12 Tp, 3 Cdo, 1st Bn RLI, was killed in the follow up of

    Mrs Mulligan, a woman who was kidnapped by CTs just outside Enterprise, during OP

    Mulligan. Eike and Bruce McKend had been ordered to advance, along with two others in

    their stick. As they approached a brick house in the kraal, they were killed instantly by 7

    or 8 CTs in the building, from a distance of 10 m. Eike was a Canadian. 16th June 1979.

    Emerick, Willem G.C. (28), Rifleman, Eighth Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, killed on

    active service from multiple shrapnel injuries in Kandeya TTL, Mt Darwin, 4 July 1975.

    Army. 12th June 1978.

    Fanner, Graeme Richard (aged 19), 2 Troop, 1 Commando, 1st Bn RLI, was killed by a

    gunshot wound, in a contact during Op Mardon in Seguranca, Mozambique, in an attack

    on a ZANLA base on the Luia (Ruya) River. As elements of 1 Commando were crossing

    the river, Frelimo opened fire with an RPD, fatally wounding Graeme in the stomach. 31st

    October 1976.

    Farai, Corporal, killed during an attack on the DC camp at Mudzi - was returning fire

    from the side of his married quarters when an RPG rocket hit and exploded inside his

    home. January 1980.

    Flemming, Alexander Ian Flamo MFC (Ops), Flt Sgt Tech/Gnr, No 7 Sqn, RhAF, was

    killed in the Mtoko area whilst flying in an Alouette III K-Car piloted by Charles Goatley.

    He was killed by the same insurgent that shot Flt Sgt Jarvie in another helicopter. They

    were flying through the Nyadiri River gap just west of the base at Mtoko, Op Hurricane.

    Private Matangira, RhASC, were killed in the same incident. 23 April 1973.

    Foster, John John the Pom Robert Gretton (aged 24), Field Reservist, PATU, British

    South Africa Police, killed in action from wounds received in Sipolilo, 10th July 1979.

    Graduate from Cirencester, UK, and was managing in Victory Block.
