22 l Rice Golf l Rice Intercollegiate

The Rice Intercollegiate presented by Srixon has become one of the most popular tournaments in the region. With mild winters, Houston is a near-perfect location to start the spring season of college golf. Led by Gaston De La Torre’s individual performance, New Mexico State shot a sec-ond-round 279 (-9) to climb into contention heading into the final day of the 2011 Rice Intercollegiate. The Aggies’ final-round 283 (-5) was the best team performance of the day and helped propel NMSU to a three-stroke win. De La Torre fired a second-round 67 and with momentum from the first day, came back to card a final-round 68 to win the individual title by three strokes with a 207 (-9). De La Torre’s three-round score set a new tournament record. The previous mark was a 209 established by Northwestern’s Scott Harrington in 2003.

TournamenT HisTory

The first two Rice Intercollegiates were held just outside Houston at Meadowbrook Farms in Katy. The inaugural event was won by Kansas which never relinquished a first-round lead. Individual honors went to Codie Mudd of Mississippi State who finished with a 212 over three rounds. Mudd was back to defend his crown in 2002 but wasn’t part of what proved to be a dramatic shootout for individual honors. In the highlight of Year Two, Baylor’s Adam Meyer and Tennessee’s David Skinns fired final round scores of 65 and 67, respectively, to tie for the individual lead (213, 3) after 54 holes. Meyer then defeated Skinns on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff (par-birdie vs. par-par) to claim first place. Ninth-ranked Tennes-see claimed the team title with a two-under par 862. In 2003, Northwestern won with an 865. The Wildcats’ Scott Harrington claimed first place with a three-round record low of 209 (-7). The 2004 Rice Intercollegiate was played at BlackHorse Golf Club in Cypress and was won by Texas-San Antonio with an 895 score. Barrett Jarosch of Denver won the 2004 event at -1 (71-72-72–215). The 2005 event was held at Wildcat Golf Club. Only two rounds were completed as rain cancelled the second round. North Texas (299-285-584) won the weather-shortened event by one stroke over Memphis (300-285–585). UNT’s Anthony Broussard captured first place at -3 (71-70–141). The 2006 tournament moved to Willowisp Country Club and the team title was claimed by Santa Clara. Colorado State’s Derek Whiting won a four-way playoff on the third hole to capture individual honors. Sam Houston State captured the 2007 tournament title, outpacing Southland Con-ference rival Southeastern Louisiana which finished five strokes back. Playing as an indi-vidual, SLU’s Aaron O’Callaghan shot a final round 69 to finish with a 217 to force a playoff with College of Charleston’s Harrison Moore. Moore sank a 20-foot birdie putt in the play-off but O’Callaghan countered by sinking a 12-foot eagle putt to clinch the title. Louisiana Tech’s Amrith de Soysa shot an even-par 72 Tuesday to finish with a one-over-par score of 217 to capture individual medalist honors in 2008. Baylor won the 2008 team title by two strokes over UC Davis. Led by Jeff Gerlich’s final-round 70, the Bears shot a 297 for the final round to finish with an 878 team score to capture the championship. In 2009, Patrick Kucich’s two-under par 70 led Pacific to an even par 288 team score during the final round as the Tigers outpaced the host Owls to win the 9th Annual Rice Intercollegiate. Pacific shot a three-round score of 874 (296-290-288). Rice, which was tied for fifth after two rounds, failed to make up any ground on the Tigers also finishing with an even-par 288 team score for the third round. The Owls carded an 878 (296-294-288) for the tournament played at Westwood Golf Club. San Francisco’s Ji Hwan Park shot even par for the final round and finished with a three-round score of 210 (-6) to win the team title by three strokes over Rice’s Christopher Brown. Brown shot a 71 Tuesday to finish with a three-round score of 213 (-3). While short sleeves is usually the norm, even in mid-February, the 2010 tournament was played in challenging conditions as the Owls won the tournament for the first time in program history. Battling afternoon wind chills in the 30s on Monday, the Owls jumped out to a three

stroke lead through the first round and began the final round eight strokes ahead of Au-burn and 18 in front of Pacific. Rice senior Christopher Brown birdied four holes on the back nine during the final round and shot the only tournament round in the 60s en route to individual medalist hon-ors as the Owls won the event. Rice had the low score for all three rounds of the tournament, distancing itself from second-place Auburn with a four-over par 292 team score on Tuesday. The Owls shot a three-round score of 886 to win the tournament by 19 strokes. Auburn was second with a 905 while 2009 champion Pacific shot a 909 to finish third. For the Owls, the tournament championship came a year after finishing as runner-up, four strokes back of Pacific.

WesTWood Golf Club

Westwood Golf Club, located just minutes from the Rice University campus in South-west Houston, is the home course of the Owls and has now played host to the Rice Inter-collegiate presented by Srixon the last four years.. Originally founded in 1928 as Westwood Country Club, the Owls’ home course has the distinction of being the second oldest Private Golf Club in Houston on its original site. Westwood underwent major renovations beginning in 2002 and reopened for play in May of 2004 after a redesign by noted golf architect Keith Foster. Hardwood oaks, lakes and a natural ravine help shape and define the fairways and greens. The style of the course is reminiscent of many of the great courses constructed in the early 20th century — simple clean and classic.

In 1984, the Golf Coaches Association of America established its All-America Scholar program. Selection requires a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2 and a stroke average under 76.00 for golfers classified as juniors or seniors who have participated in at least 75 percent of his team’s tournaments during the season for which the award is given. Originally called the Aca-demic All-America award, the prestigious honor was renamed the GCAA All-America Scholar Award. Since the awards inception, Rice University has had 19 student-ath-letes receive the award a total of 31 times. Last spring, Michael Buttacavoli became the Owls’ latest Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) All-America Scholar to be a multi-year se-lection. Also in 2010, Michael Whitehead became the 19th Rice player to receive All-America Scholar recognition. In addition, the 2010 season marked the ninth time since the incep-tion of the award Rice has had two student-athletes named All-America Scholars in the same year. Twice since the honor’s inception Rice has had three players selected (1991 and 2004).

Also recognized in multiple seasons as GCAA All-America Scholars was Houston Martin (1986-1987), Blake Johnson (1989, 1991), Alan Rosen (1990-91), Jeff Makobon (1991-1993), Chris Brauners (1992-93), Tim Carl-son (1995, 1997), John Lawrence (1996-97), C.W. Mallon (1998-99), Ryan Morgan (2003-04) and Scott Philips (2003-04). The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) is the professional association of men’s golf coaches. Established in 1958, the non-profit orga-nization is dedicated to education, promoting and recognizing its mem-bers who participate in men’s golf at all levels. Through its established events and programs, the GCAA maintains a goal of increasing awareness and the status of men’s golf.
