ost readers will befamiliar withastrology, andprobably havesome knowledge ofthe 12 astrological

sun signs. We have now taken on boardmany of its ideas, for example, thatCapricorns are hard working career-basedpeople who mature later in life, or thatTaureans have a natural ability to gravitateto what is comfortable for them, or thatLeos are proud beings who like to be thecentre of attention. For those of you witha deeper knowledge of your ownastrological chart you’ll know the specificsrelating to which planets you have inwhich astrological house and thereforeknow those propensities you exhibit as aresult of those planetary positions.

It is taken for granted in astrologicalanalysis that the day and time of yourbirth must be known in order to accessthis information. Certainly, thosereaders who have experimented withthe free astrological software attachedto last issue’s cover will have usedsuch data to get computer generatedreadings on themselves and theirfriends and family and will see howaccurate such astrological analysis canbe. But what if I told you that the verysame data could reveal to you theunique genetic blueprint of who youare! A map, if you will, that candescribe not only your uniquepersonality traits, as in astrology, butalso the specific underlying motivationsthat are unconscious in you, and yetaffect the way you lead your life. Thetenets of The Human Design systemare based in genetics and there is adirect correlation between the I Chingand the codons in genetics. As asynthesis of The I Ching, Astrology,Kabbalah, Tarot and genetics theHuman Design system is a completesystem in and of itself that transcendsthe scope of any one of these bodiesof knowledge.

On the face of it, it seems to be agreat arrogance to state that a HumanDesign analysis can tell you ‘who youare’. So let me be clear from theoutset, Human Design is about ourfundamental mechanics, the‘programming’ we receive from theplanets (through a neutrino imprint –neutrinos have mass, as they passthrough our bodies, and those of ourmother, they imprint us with a uniqueand specific pattern), through ourincarnation in this material realm. Thespecific content of our life’s experience, our own deep interiority and spiritualand psychological level of awareness, cannot be known – that is an intenselyprivate affair, to do with our ownpersonal development, and the degreeto which we have taken responsibilityfor our life.

But in a rigorous investigation ofthousands of charts over many years, I can confirm that the mechanics ofwho we are, as described in theHuman Design system, without fail, provide an accurate container for thecontent of our lives. It describes thedirection of our lives, the kind of peopleand experiences we are drawn to,indeed, even the way we speak!

I am not drawn to outrageousclaims. I have seen countless systemsthrough the seventeen and half years ofbeing editor-in-chief of Kindred Spirit,(not to mention more than a decade of

investigation and experimentation Iundertook before doing the magazine),and I have developed a cautious, evensceptical, initial approach to newinformation. So many systems areincomplete and ultimately, inaccurate orsuperficial. And yet, my investigation ofthe Human Design system has led meto a depth of understanding that canonly be described as something akin tothe revelations seen by those who sawbeneath The Matrix in the film of thesame name. To see myself, the world, and its inhabitants march relentlessly toa program they are unaware of, ishumbling, and even a little scary. WhenI first realized that it really was true – atmore than an intellectual level – I wasshocked. The effect has been acompassionate acceptance of who I am, as seen through this system, andall those I come in contact with. In thisshort article I shall attempt to give yousome idea of the insights availablethrough understanding this system.

The Basic Mechanics of Human DesignSimply put – we are all unique. Thespecific mechanics of that uniqueness canbe seen by a study of your Human Designchart. How? Through type, definition, profile, and line. All these terms aredescribed below, and each of them hasnumerous ‘keynotes’ – phrases or wordsthat can be accurately applied to them.

This is a powerful and complex toolfor seeing, at a fundamental level,

a blueprint of who we are as aconsciousness in form.

Richard Beaumont takes us ona tour of some of the possibilitiesrevealed in this system, which is

introduced in this issue’s free CD-ROM

Above: The generic Human Design wheel – showing the I Chinghexagrams, the gates, the astrological houses, the centres, and the

channels – all of which provide the keys to a unique map thataccurately describes each one of us, as we each have our own

unique differentiation of this complete blueprint.

TypeJust as there are four blood types andfour basic codons in genetics, so there arefour basic types of human being:Manifestors, Generators, Projectors andReflectors. This is the first level ofdifferentiation and is of greatestimportance to everyone. Knowing whichtype you are leads you to a basic strategyfor making the decisions that are correctfor you in this life. Previous articles andinformation on the websites referred to, as

well as the CD, will be a good source foryou on this most basic and important

information.

DefinitionThe vast majority of us will have

various centres (the squares, trianglesand geometric shapes) in our chart linkedby a channel. A channel is where twogates (or hexagrams from the I Ching)are joined together. Each gaterepresents a hexagram and isaccented by a line of thathexagram. See figure. 1 – herethe 29-46 channel is present. This is the Channel ofDiscovery. It is a red channelin this example – in otherwords anyone who hasthis red in their charthas it as part of theirunconsciousprogramming andwill not be able toconsciouslyaccess thispart ofthemselves. If it isblack inyour chart, then you will be aware of thekeynote tendencies in your life asdescribed. The 29th gate is about saying‘yes’ almost automatically, as a knee-jerkreaction – people with this gate have thepower to commit themselves to a processwithout the need to know where it willtake them. It is about saying ‘yes’ to awhole new cycle. Part of their journey inlife is to learn how to distinguish betweenwhat is worth committing to and what isnot. They run the danger of over-committing their energies. Gate 46 is thegate of determination or pushing upward.Known also as the gate of serendipity – ofbeing in the right place at the right time.Of course, we live in a binary, yin-yangworld, so occasionally someone with thisin their chart can also be in the wrongplace at the wrong time. But generally it isregarded as being a gate of good fortune. It is about respecting the rightness ofevery experience, even the unpleasantones. Gate 46 also has the keynote of

love of the body and sensuality. If youhave either of these gates in your chart(red or black) they are potentialities thatcan be activated by others who come incontact with you who have the other gate.If you have them both, and therefore havethe whole channel, the gates become alivein you and give birth to a life force thattranscends the particular attributes ofeach gate, becoming the Channel ofDiscovery. These people have a tendencyto lose themselves in their experiencesand only discover what their experiencesare really about after the experience isover. If they are only half-committed totheir experience and pull out before theexperience is over, they will learn nothing. If they stay the course they can discovernew things and as a result can succeedwhere others fail.

Profiles and LinesJust as in astrology where we have

12 sun signs, so in the HumanDesign system there are 12 basic

characters delineated by thefollowing numbers: 1.3; 1.4;

2.4; 2.5; 3.5; 3.6; 4.1; 4.6;5.1; 5.2; 6.2 and 6.3. These

are called profiles.Comprising just six

numbers, each numberhas a whole range of

keynote attributes:the first number

represents thepersonality of

the person’scharacter and

the second,the

underlying motivation of the person. Eachnumber relates to a particular line in ahexagram (which has six lines).

Here’s a short list of keynotes for thenumbers:1st Line – Investigators – Anyone with afirst line in their profile is basically insecureand will find themselves building a securefoundation of knowledge based upon theirown investigations through research and/orexperience. As leaders their very insecuritycan lead to authoritarian tendencies. Theyare a wealth of knowledge in their chosenfield and they jump from one deepfoundation to another.2nd Line – Hermits – These are inherentlyself-motivated people. You cannot get themto do what they don’t want to do, and if youforce them they will not do it well. Theybasically want to be left alone to dowhatever it is they want to do. Some referto them as lazy, but you’ll be amazed athow they can dedicate themselves to theirchosen subject. They are naturals at what

Head – (Pressure Centre) fuelof inspiration Ajna – (Awareness Centre)The Mind, mentalconceptualizing and source ofanxiety - great for research, but bad as an authority over ones own life direction.Throat – (Centre ofManifestation) Metamorphiccentre of action and talking.G Centre – Direction, Love, and a sense of self identitycome from here.Heart / Ego / WIll – (Motor) –Source of sustained will andego power.Sacral – (Motor) The centre oflife force, sexuality and fertility.Full of sounds.Root (Pressure Centre andMotor) – the source ofadrenalin and stress.Spleen – Intuition, instinctand fear. Feel good factor.Solar Plexus (Awarenesscentre and Motor) – All threeemotional waves come fromhere back again– feelings, emotions and sensitivity.

The Centres

they do and will share their gifts only if‘called out’ by others who see in them thegifts that they themselves can be unawareof. They are initially shy, but underneaththey are missionaries. Once you call themout, be prepared to hear all about it,whether it is spirituality, cars, sport, love ofanimals or whatever. They have aparticular gift with children as they carry anessential innocence within them and areoften seen to be eternally young.3rd Line – Martyrs – They learn by trialand error, and continually make mistakes.Learning by experience, they can learnfrom their mistakes. Most of all they learnwhat doesn’t work, but they also candiscover things that are rarely known. Beforgiving with these people and they’ll saveyou a lot of time by telling you what toavoid. Naturally pessimistic, they can alsobe great sources of humour in the tellingof their tales of experience. They have thetendency to make and break bonds withothers and learn by ‘bumping into’ peopleand things.4th line – Opportunists – These peopleare always looking for an opportunity toexternalize what they learnt from theirchildhood. Opportunities come to themonly from friends or acquaintances. Theyare inherently fixed in their nature and willbreak rather than bend. This veryfixedness means they can be incrediblyinfluential and are great networkers. Theyoperate on a brotherhood-sisterhoodbasis and are often as friendly or as meanas only a sibling can be. They can befriends for life.5th Lines – Heretics – Everything isabout reputation for these beings. Theycan affect the lives of strangers andalways there will be those that will lovethem and those that will hate them. Theyare here to universalize to others and canhave a large impact on a large number ofpeople. They have a projection fieldaround them always and have to bear theburden of expectations (and projections)from others who see in them that theyhave the potentiality to fulfil theirexpectations. When they don’t, they canbe ‘burned at the stake’ from thedisappointment. They are naturallyparanoid as a result. Another key word forthem is practical – as long as they keeptheir sharing to what is practical, they willhave a largely good reputation.6th Lines – Role Models – They havethree stages in their life – up to theirSaturn Return (28-29 years old roughly)they learn by trial and error and live anintense life, usually full of mistakes. Up totheir Chiron return (28-9 to 50-51 yearsold) they move to an aloof state, livingtheir life almost as if it were someoneelse’s. Here they watch everything and

learn great wisdom. People often cometo them as authorities. After theirChiron Return they go throughanother great change in their life andcome back into the intensity oftheir lives. If they’ve learnt fromtheir middle stage of life they willbe true role models ofthemselves and will enjoytheir final stage of life as thebest time. Always they long forperfection and are naturally optimistic.

Lines in the hexagramsThe lines above that correspond to yourparticular profile or character can befound in the sun and earthconfigurations on your chart – theselines and hexagrams comprise 70%of the planetary programming oneach of us. But there are lineson each hexgram / gate inyour chart and they informthe particular aspect of that hexagram asapplied to the specific planet. Referred toin your Human Design chart as the littlenumbers next to the big numbers, thereare many keynotes for each hexagram line(see the Rave I Ching book availablefrom www.humandesign-uk.com andKindred Spirit’s mail order shop).

ConditioningWe live in a world of conditioning,a world of auric overlappingwhere other people fix (ordefine) the centres we haveopen. Whatever centres are open, or whitein your chart, shows you where you areaffected by others. For instance, if youhave a solar plexus centre that is white, you will amplify the emotions of others, and as they move up and downcontinually on an emotional wave –from hope to pain, and back again, you will be left reeling from theemotional intensity of theirnegative emotions. Our geneswant only one thing –

difference. The program of the genes is tomake more. So we are always drawn tothose who have different definitions and

opposite gates to us, and more oftenthan not, we create children who

have a radically different design totheir parents. This knowledge is

based in chemistry. It is alsoabout timing – the planets alsocondition us as they move, so

new definitions enter the world on a dailybasis, and we find ourselves beinginfluenced by planetary transits. Knowingyour own chart, and specific strategy and

where you can be conditioned, is oftremendous practical benefit. Not

knowing this leads us to live a life that isnot our own, where we are continually

being pushed and pulled indirections that cause unnecessary

suffering and hardship.

ChildrenThis knowledge can be especially usefulin the parenting process. Knowing achild’s design means they can beguided in the direction of their naturerather than be forced to live according

to general non-specific standards. Thechildren I have met who have been

brought up by parents in thisknowledge are a rare delight of

natural wisdom and joy.I have merely touched the

surface of this deep knowledge– there is mystical, financial, health, relationship and

mysterious information available to you.For example, each of us is born on anincarnation cross that speaks of why andfor what we incarnated at this time. Thejourney into the Human Design systemis ultimately one of transformation: it

exists to free those of us who areliving our conditioning rather than

our true self and who, at ourdeepest core, know there is

a reason to our lives and aplace for our unique

contribution to manifest.
