Mount St. Mary's College Ecclesia
program is presenting a series of
workshops especially for RCIA
ministry in 2011-2012, and you, your team, and
all ministers of your parish are invited. All of these workshops
are offered on Saturdays, from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm, in the
Donohue Center of Mount St. Mary’s Doheny (downtown LA)
campus. Each may be taken independently, or as part of the
series.
September 24 - Rev. Ron Oakham, O. Carm
Catechesis in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults The Church intends that the process of initiation be gradual and com-
plete. This session will seek to help the participants recognize the con-
gruency between the different levels of catechesis as outlined in the
different formation periods of the RCIA and in the General Directory
for Catechesis (GDC). There will be an exploration of the Sunday Lit-
urgy of the Word as the primary starting point for formation during the
Period of the Catechumenate, and a development of a complete catech-
esis as outlined in RCIA 75, stemming from the Sunday Liturgy of the
Word.
Fr. Ron Oakham is a national leader in the implementation of the
RCIA, and is currently the pastor of St. Cyril of Alexandria parish in
Tucson, Arizona.
January 14 - Msgr. Craig Cox
In Good Times and Bad: Marriage Issues in Pastoral Ministry and
Canon Law Designed especially for the many Initiation ministers who encounter
complex and pastorally sensitive marriage issues in the Inquirers, Cate-
chumens and Candidates we serve, this workshop provides an overview
of the Catholic understanding of marriage, as well as discussion of
pastoral responses to people in a variety of situations. Special atten-
tion will be given to providing pastoral care for Inquirers, Catechu-
mens and Candidates during the process of annulment. The focus of
the day will be on how all ministers – in every position – might help
to provide compassionate and helpful ministry for those in difficult
marital situations, and especially how we can best support those who
are also seeking baptism or the full communion of the Catholic
Church. Msgr. Cox has long experience in initiation ministry and the Archdi-
ocesan Marriage Tribunal. He is currently the President/Rector of St.
John’s Seminary in Camarillo. (Please note: the date has been
changed from the date provided in the informational material. The
date of this workshop IS January 14, 2011).
February 4 - Rev. Ron Oakham, O. Carm.
The 90 Days of the Easter Cycle and the RCIA Lent, Easter Triduum and Eastertime form the key liturgical cycle in
the faith life of the Catholic community. The initiation process, as
outlined in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, culminates with
these 90 days of the Church Year. This workshop day will explore
the Period of Purification & Enlightenment and the Period of Mysta-
gogy, along with the rituals of initiation within them that give direc-
tion not only to the catechumenal process but to the Church at large
for this sacred time. The cost is $25 per person for each workshop, or $20 per person for
groups of 5 or more, or $20 per workshop for those who register for
all three workshops in the Initiation series.

PREPARING FOR THE NEW TRANSLATION OF
THE MASS What Will Be Happening with the Prayers at Mass?
On the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011, Catholic
parishes in the United States will begin praying the texts of the
Mass using a new English translation of the Roman Missal.
The Roman Missal is the large book that we are accustomed to
seeing the priest use at our Eucharistic liturgies. It contains the
official prayers of the Mass. In the early part of this century,
the late Blessed Pope John Paul II called for the original Latin
Missal (the official prayer book for Mass for the entire
Catholic Church worldwide) to be re-translated into the
various languages prayed throughout the world. He and other
Church leaders felt that our current English translation could
be improved. He called for new translations that would be
much more faithful to the original Latin texts, so that all Cath-
olics throughout the world would become more closely united
by praying translations that were closer to the original. The
words that we pray at Mass express our beliefs; it is
important that the translations capture and express these beliefs
clearly. The translation process has come to a culmination
now, and on the First Sunday of Advent we will begin using
this new translation at Mass. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
