For this we expect each other to behave in such a way that does not harm or hurt us. People can not have rights that harm or hurt others. The claims we make should be reasonable and should be recognised by the society. They should be such that can be made available to others in equal measures. Thus, a right comes with obligation to respect other rights.

Why do we need rights in a Democracy??

Why do we need rights in a Democracy??

To prevent the arbitrary exercise of power on individuals or groups.

To allow for expression of freedom, in the sense that rights mark individuals are equal citizens with the power and responsibility to participate in government.

To delineate the distribution of authority and formation of government to the people, who form the body of citizens.

Rights help in enhancing the dignity of the citizens. Rights are needed for an individual to contribute to the society

and live a life of true citizen. To protect the liberties and freedom of the citizens even if the

government keeps on changing. To protect the minority from the oppression of majority.

Democracy itself revolves around the word “Rights”. If there are no rights, it can not be called as a democracy. Rights help us to speak for our self and what we want from our government, it helps us in choosing the leader to run our government. They ensure that the majority can not do whatever it likes. It also provides us the equality between the other caste, creed , culture and helps in uniting us for our common goals. Rights are guarantees which can be used when things go wrong. They help the citizens to remain superior in a Democracy.
