Nativity Catholic Church, Burke Virginia First Sunday of Lent March 1, 2020

My dear parishioners,

Pope Francis urges us to respond to the Gospel, to live it more fully and more deeply, to reach out to the poor and broken, to end injustice, to build peace. And to find the joy in all of it. (Evangelii Gaudium) Here at Nativity Catholic Church, we put this exhortation into practice, across the street and around the world.

Last year, through our international ministry, Operation Starfish, we broke ground on our 12th “Nativity Village” development in Haiti – Nativity Village at Balan. In 2020 we will continue working with Food For The Poor on construction and develop-ment at Balan. When completed, this village will have 70 new homes, a school with a soccer field and basketball court, community center and small business opportunities for the residents. For the first time, we will be running water lines to each individual home and there will be a community septic system.

During Lent we will continue our long-standing tradition of placing a large basket in the vestibule of the church for our spare change. Any coins or currency placed in the basket will be shared with Operation Starfish and Catholic Relief Services (CRS). If you specifically designate either Operation Starfish or CRS, your designation will be honored.

The major Operation Starfish collection will take place this year on the Fourth Sunday of Easter, May 3, 2020. There will be a second collection on that Sunday at all the Masses. May 3 is the anniversary of our late Pastor, Fr. Richard Martin’s return to God. Fr. Martin loved the poor and founded Operation Starfish here at Nativity Catholic Church in 1998. We have a parish tradition of taking the annual Starfish collection during the Easter season on the Sunday closest to Fr. Martin’s anniversary.

Operation Starfish has brought God’s love and Nativity Catholic Church’s resources to bear on the needs of the poor, with more than 1,400 families in new homes in Haiti. Let’s continue this beautiful tradition, begun by our beloved Fr. Martin 22 years ago. Let’s keep making a difference, one family at a time.

Love and Blessings,

Fr. Bob Cilinski Pastor

A Message from our Pastor Fr. Bob Cilinski

2020 Bishop’s Lenten Appeal Steadfast in Faith and Joyful in Hope

The Bishop's Lenten Appeal is critical to our diocesan needs and we are asking every household in our parish to support this appeal to the extent that they are able. The BLA funds many programs, services and ministries that serve people in need and furthers the Gospel mission of Jesus Christ in our diocese. Let us join together to do the Lord's work - works that touch the lives and souls of thousands of people. Thank you!

Please join us for a Night of Reflection with Irish Tenor Mark Forrest

On March 11th, 2020 at 7:00pm at Nativity Catholic Church,

all ages are welcome!

The Come Walk With Me evening is a time for us to reflect on our personal relationship with Jesus Christ. During the evening,

the blessed sacrament will be exposed and Irish tenor Mark Forrest will take you through an evening of music, reflection,

and healing. Consider taking an hour with the Lord as he invites you to a closer walk with him.

Rules for Lenten Fasting and Abstinence

Everyone over 14 years of age is bound to observe the law of abstinence. Abstinence is to be observed on all Fridays within the season of Lent. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday everyone over 18 and up to the beginning of their 60th year is also bound to observe the law of fast. On these days, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs; but together they should not equal another full meal. Like other penitential days, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday begin and end at midnight. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, therefore, are the only days of both fast and abstinence.

ACCOLADE OF THE WEEK

Many thanks to all who participated in the St. Lucy Food Drive last Sunday. Special gratitude to Jason Hines,

Papal Blessing Parchments

The gift of an Apostolic Blessing, formally inscribed on parchment and sent from Rome, is a traditional means of marking milestone events such as wedding anniversaries, baptisms, first communions, confirmations and significant birthdays. These parchments are produced by the Holy See’s Office of Papal Charities, or Elemosineria Apostolica, which is charged with exercising charity to the poor in the name of the Holy Father. Since the time of Pope Leo XIII, the production of these parchments has served as an important means of funding charitable works. Papal Blessing Parchments may now be ordered online directly from the Elemosineria Apostolica using their website, www.elemosineria.va (click on “Papal Blessing Parchments”). A number of beautiful formats are available for each type of event.

A message from Your Nativity Creation Care Ministry

In honor of the upcoming fifth anniversary of Laudato Si, Nativity Creation Care Ministry is bringing you, over a period of weeks, Top Ten Takeaways from 'Laudato Si' by James Martin, S.J. Piope Francis’ revolutionary ...encyclical calls for a “broad cultural revolution” to confront the environmental crisis. “Laudato Si” is also quite lengthy. Can it be summarized? In other words, what are the main messages, or “takeaways” of this encyclical?

5) Discussions about ecology can be grounded in the Bible andchurch tradition.Wisely, Pope Francis begins the encyclical not with a reflection on Scripture and tradition (the two pillars of Catholic teaching), which might tempt nonbelievers to set aside the letter, but with an overview of the crisis—including issues of water, biodiversity and so on. Only in Chapter Two does he turn towards “The Gospel of Creation,” in which he leads readers, step by step, through the call to care for creation that extends as far back as the Book of Genesis, when humankind was called to “till and keep” the earth. But we have done, to summarize his approach, too much tilling and not enough keeping. In a masterful overview, Pope Francis traces the theme of love for creation through both the Old and New Testaments. He reminds us, for example, that God, in Jesus Christ, became not only human, but part of the natural world. Moreover, Jesus himself appreciated the natural world, as is evident in the Gospel passages in which he praises creation. The insights of the saints are also recalled, most espe-cially St. Francis of Assisi, the spiritual lodestar of the document. In addition to helping nonbelievers understand the Scripture and the church’s traditions, he explicitly tries to inspire believers to care for nature and the environment.

Next week: Takeaway 6: Everything is connected—including the economy.

Please see the Nativity Creation Care Ministry webpage:https://nativityburke.org/service/creation-care/ for a Creation Care Lenten calendar with daily ideas to make Creation Care an important part of your Lenten observance.

Quiero aprender a ser realista y admitir mi pequeñez y mis limitaciones, mi egoísmo y mi soberbia, mi torpeza y mi sensuali-

Mateo 17,1-9

Padre Segismundo Fernandez
