We have seen and heard from our children, youth and families just how much generosity is rising up in their lives through ministry at KUMC. As we approach the Rising Up commitment Sunday, we ask you to pray about where God is leading you to be a part of His best plan for the future of our church. On April 9, we will con- clude our RISING UP sermon series and campaign by celebrating all that God is doing at KUMC. This will be an opportunity for the community to respond with generosity as we bring our RISING UP commitment cards to the altar. If you have received your card in the mail, please plan to bring it that morning and in the chance you cannot be with us then feel free to bring the card by the church office or place it in the mail. We look forward to the days ahead and pray that God continues to give us a generous spirit so that His love will continue rising up among us!

RISING UP COMMITMENT SUNDAYDear Heavenly Father, We thank you and praise you for this church you have given us - a church that is more than a building, but is the people that You have built together, rising up to answer Your call. We give you all honor and glory for the sacred space that house our times of fellowship and ministry, and we pray that they may always be used to glorify You. On Easter morning we bring our Ris-ing Up series to a climax through our celebration of the resurrection of Christ in a variety of venues and wor-ship styles. We share in the sunrise encounter of the women at the tomb by holding worship in Town Center Park at 7 a.m. Rev. John Wayne Mc-Mann will be preaching and the Vine worship team led by Alex Westbrook will be leading us in music and prayer. Then we will bring the joy of the res-urrection into the KUMC sanctuary at 8:30, 9:40 and 11:00 with Revs. Chris Harrison and Jim Welch worship-ing alongside our phenemonal tradi-tional music ministries led by David Allen. At 11:00 The Well community led by Rev. Kenn Munn will gather to glorify God in E200 and Rev. Sara Reyes and the El Refugio community with join their voices and corazones with God and one another in the Fellowship Hall. Come and be a part of this amazing community of faith which has been shaped and formed by the life, death and resurrection of Christ!

EASTER SUNDAY

GOOD FRIDAYJoin the Chancel Choir on Good Friday for Return to Me, a musical journey through the traditional stations of the cross. Beginning with the sharing of the bread and wine in the upper room and ultimately ending with Christ’s death on the cross, Return to Me is a poignant setting of familiar scriptures and powerful text that will create a deeply spiritual experience for Holy Week.

You may make a purchase to honor or memorialize a loved one on Sundays, April 2 & 9 at the Welcome Center in the Commons or at the church office during regular office hours. The cost is $12 each and a list of those honored will be in the worship bulletin on Easter Sunday.

APRIL MONTHLY MISSION OFFERING

The Oasis Ministry began when facts regarding the Foster Care System in Texas could no longer be ignored. As of January 2017, Harris County alone has 2,279 kids in Foster Care with the total for Texas at 15,594. News reports of kids sleeping in CPS offices due to lack of available licensed Foster Homes combined with pleas from our Governor Greg Abbott, for the church to step in to help, compelled our team to see what that “help” might look like for KUMC.

Our mission is to provide support to Foster Families in our local community who have heeded God’s call to care for our most vulnerable population. Due to the generous support from our congregation, we have been able to assist families with Christmas gifts, basic supplies for daily needs, like diapers and clothes, many meals, and spiritual support from our team and pastors. In February, we had the great honor of celebrating the final adoption of a sweet 3 year old little boy.

Our biggest joy has been the friendships that have developed with these families, and we are constantly amazed at the hard work and love they are pouring into these kids on a daily basis. It is not an easy task, but they have become warriors for these children and are making huge impacts on them.

Our goals for 2017 are not only to provide continued support, but also to add family-centered events and educational opportunities for KUMC members who want to be more involved in hands on care of these kids. So keep an eye out for upcoming events! If you would like to receive updates through our bi-monthly newsletter, contact [email protected].

On behalf of the Oasis Team, we thank you very much for your continued involvement and support. We also ask that you keep these foster families in your prayers for daily strength to continue with God’s call. Also pray how the Lord might use you! Everyone can do something!

CHILDREN’S SUNDAY

MAUNDYTHURSDAY

What would you say to your closest friends the night before you passed away? Would you try to comfort them and offer them peace or challenge them to be even stronger and more united in your absence? How would you help them lift their eyes to God? Come to our Maundy Thursday service at 7pm on April 13 so that together we can hear and experience how Jesus comforted and challenged those around him the night before he was to be crucified. I guarantee there is a word of hope or conviction for our lives as well!

On Sunday, April 2nd, the Children’s Choirs will team up with Confirmation class members to perform children-led services in both The Vine (9:40) and the Sanctuary (11:00). In conjunction with the Rising Up Campaign’s “Focus on Children” Sunday, most of the major elements of worship will be handled by the children, including prayers, scripture readings, and assisting with communion. The Praise Team and Chancel Choir will each take a break, as ALL THREE Children’s Choirs will combine to practice being “ministers of music,” performing multiple songs of praise and thanksgiving. This will also be the Cherub Choir’s first performance of the spring season! Please come support the children as they get a better understanding of what it takes to lead two different styles of worship services!

In Jesus, God became human and fully experienced the wide range of emo-tions we all encounter in life. Jesus experienced times of loneliness, sad-ness, hurt, anger, disappointment, grief, and abandonment. That is part of being human. Another part of be-ing human is needing help from each other. God never intended us to be completely self-sufficient. Part of God’s plan is for each of us to turn to others for help when we need it.So when you are experiencing diffi-cult times, don’t struggle alone. Our Stephen Ministers will walk with you, listen to you, encourage you, pray with you, and provide confidential one-to-one care to help you through tough times. Stephen Ministers can bring the love of Jesus back into your life. To learn more about Stephen Minis-try, call Donna Smith at 281-358-2137 or Don McMath at 281-812-2725. Our Stephen Ministers are ready to care for you!

IT’S OKAYTO BE HUMAN...

Allen Walworth, Executive Vice President at Generis, the company which is helping us with our Rising Up Campaign, will be preaching at 9:40 and 11:00 in the sanctu-ary on April 30. Allen is a gifted and prov-en consultant with more than 14 years of full time experience in the church stew-ardship ministry, He brings the passion and calling of an ordained pastor who served 17 years in local congregations, the training and discipline of a Biblical schol-ar who taught in college and seminary set-tings, and the wisdom of a tenured church “coach” to his work and to our pulpit on this day. Come and be blessed!

GUEST PREACHER

Chichicastenago (‘ChiChi’), Guatemala – A 2-person team of KUMC members (Rick Smith and Gladden Lawrence) traveled to Guatemala last month to investigate and participate with 17 other Methodist volunteers to build stoves for the indigenous Mayan population of the region. The volunteers were divided up into 6 teams of three North American volunteers and a Guatemalan ‘master stove builder’ to assist with each stove. Over a 5-day period, 16 stoves were completed; 14 in a village north of ‘ChiChi’ called Paquixit (Pack-a-sheet) 2 more in a colonia (neighborhood) near Panajachel (referred to as Pan) called Maria Tecun. This stove builder ministry is an outreach program of the First United Methodist Church in Wichita, Kansas. The primary focus is helping the families in remote areas of Guatemala who cook their meals on the ground in windowless kitchens with no way to vent the smoke. Lung and eye diseases are a major health concern, along with burns due to these open fires. The stove is designed to be a safe, fuel-efficient method of not only cooking their meals, but assists in safely heating the homes in this high altitude region of Guatemala. The stoves are constructed out of cinder blocks, fire bricks, concrete and mortar, and vented using concrete piping for added strength and fuel efficiency.Rick and Gladden worked alongside men and women from Methodist churches in Kan-sas, Indiana, and Nebraska. Many were experienced working on these stoves, while others were ‘rookies’.Reflecting on his return, Rick said, “It was such a pleasure to work with others who were also serving those who were serving others. Working along side of the stove builders who were serving the families in the village. The families were such gracious hosts.”One stove costs $120US to build. The family is asked to pay $20US with the rest of the cost generated by donations.More details about this journey into building stoves in Guatemala can be found on KUMC’s Blog at kingwoodumc.wordpress.com.The next Stove Builders of Guatemala mission trip will be led by a team from KUMC, and is scheduled for the week of January 20th thru the 28th of 2018. Signups will begin later this spring.

SOSS SCHOOL SUPPLIESSociety of St. Stephens is again placing our hope and trust in our generous community to provide much needed funds to purchase new school supplies, backpacks and Payless shoe vouchers for nearly 1,000 children of Society of St. Stephen client children this year. In addition, we hope lives will be changed for the better with the realization that so many others really care for these children and value their education. As retired school teachers, SOSS school supplies coordinators Terri Parker and Judy Monaghan, hold dear the value of education and know the importance of having the proper tools to start the school year off right. Thousands of dollars worth of school supplies will be given away as a reflection of God’s love and the generosity of others in our community to area children and youth. Those supplies will be purchased from funds collected primarily through a major fundraiser held in May. The Society of St. Stephen Charity Tennis Tournament ‘netted’ over $65,000 last year for school supplies, SOSS Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday basket programs and The Margaret S. White scholarship fund for graduating seniors in the SOSS service area. Volunteers from Society of St. Stephen, Kingwood UMC, area churches, community groups and organizations will combine forces with smiles and helping hands to organize and distribute the supplies August 10th and 11th in the Kingwood UMC Gym from 8:30am - noon. For more information about how you can volunteer for school supplies organization and distribution, please contact SOSS at 281-358-7722.Please add all these disadvantaged children and their families to your prayer list for the school year. They are definitely starting off the school year with one great lesson: God loves them and He has plans for them to succeed!

What shall I render to my Godfor all His mercy’s store?

I’ll take the gifts He hath bestowed, and humbly ask for more.

A NEW DAY! A CONCERT OF POP AND GOSPEL MUSIC SUPPORTING

OAKS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS

On April 23 at 4:00 pm, the women’s choir Sola Gratia will present a concert “A New Day” in the KUMC sanctuary as a fundraiser for the Oaks of Righteousness. Originally formed in 2012, Oaks of Righteousness is a nonprofit organization in downtown Humble devoted to helping women coming out of incarceration. Many of these women want to change their lives, but their options are limited. Prison experts recognize transitional living as an essential element in helping to break the cycle of recidivism. Oaks of Righteousness provides a secure, faith-based transitional environment for up to six women over a nine- to twelve-month period. During this time the residents participate in a program that incorporates life skills, job readiness, and access to basic healthcare services, as well as recovery programs to sustain sobriety, provide guidance in money management, and foster continued spiritual growth. In order to graduate a client must complete the program and become employed. To date fourteen women have gone through the program.Carol Sloane, a member of Sola Gratia, served as vice president on the original board of the Oaks. She was drawn to the project after joining KUMC’s bus ministry, in which church members meet women just released from incarceration and provide a meal and clothing as well as encouragement. “When I saw these ladies and heard their stories, I knew they had head knowledge of how to have a better life, but they couldn’t live it out unless their basic spiritual, physical, and emotional needs were met. I knew I needed to go into the prison and be one of the people helping them. That’s when I met Leticia.” For the past six years Carol has served as a constant mentor for Oaks graduate Leticia Jackson. When asked if this experience was rewarding, Carol exclaimed, “Absolutely! To see someone being transformed, to see how God works—you can’t buy that kind of joy.” Leticia graduated from the Oaks program this year after a twelve-month residency. “Following the rules and regulations was difficult at times because it’s a dramatic change, but these people are trying to teach you how to walk righteously. For me it was successful because the people around me cared about my well-being. I had to humble myself and listen to them.” Leticia is now engaged, working part time at KUMC, and is studying toward a cosmetology degree. The monthly operating cost, depending on the number of residents, is $6,000 to $9,000. The program is currently supported financially by contributions from community members and local churches, civic organizations such as the Humble Rotary Club, as well as grants from Insperity, among others, but fundraisers provide essential resources to keep the program going. As a women’s choir, Sola Gratia feels honored to participate in fundraisers for the Oaks program. Directed by Meredith Koerner, the choir, whose name means “by grace alone,” is made up of women of all ages and musical backgrounds. Accompaniment for the concert will be provided by Scott Cheairs, percussionist for the Vine service band; Mike Astwood on string bass; and Dr. Sergey Kuznetsov, a faculty member in the music department at Lone Star College Montgomery, on piano. The KUMC Orchestra and Foundation Brass ensembles will also participate in the program. Both ensembles are comprised of church and community members who come together to share their gifts and talents through performance in worship. The April 23 fundraising concert features inspirational music from the pop and gospel genres including songs performed by The Piano Guys, Josh Groban, the cast of Glee, Lauren Daigle, and from the movie Frozen, sung by both soloists and the full group. A suggested $20.00 donation will be collected at the door in lieu of tickets, and an offering for Oaks of Righteousness will be held at the concert. Following the concert guests are invited to a dessert reception in the church commons, provided by board members of the Oaks.

TEXAS ANNUAL CONFERENCE

MISSION CENTERA gathering of Texas Annual Conference dignitaries, Conference Trustees, leaders from area churches, and a group of mem-bers of KUMC attended a grand opening of the newly constructed Mission Center and Archives Building on February 28th in Conroe, TX. Bishop Scott Jones, Rev. Scott Moore, Rev. Dr. Elijah Stansell, and Rev. Diane McGehee all presided over the mission center dedication. The Mission Center/Archives Building will serve the conference from two per-spectives; provide a depot to assemble, store, and dispatch disaster relief supplies such as health kits, flood buckets, along with housing early response tool trailers ready for use to provide a caring Chris-tian presence in the aftermath of a disas-ter. The Archives Building will provide a safe repository of historical documents from locations all over the conference. After the dedication ceremony and facil-ity tour, Christine Riggle, Mission Cen-ter Assistant, demonstrated how relief supplies were assembled and checked. A group of volunteers were then given the opportunity, in teams of two persons, to verify previously assembled health kits and then packaged them in cases ready for storage until needed.Christine also gave the volunteers a short overview of the depot’s 3rd Saturday Mission Service opportunity for families, church groups, or individuals wanting to serve by assembling and verifying health supplies on the 3rd Saturday of every month. They offer 2 sessions; 10:00 am to 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm. Each session can accommodate 40-50 people. The last 30 minutes of each Saturday session is open for discussion on what each church and its members are doing in missions.Available dates at the Missions Center in 2017 are: May 20th, June 17th, July 15th, August 19th, September 16th, October 21st, and November 18th. No 3rd Saturday is scheduled for December. The center is located at 3765 N. Loop 336 East in Conroe, TX.You can register by contacting Christine Riggle at 936.788.6650, email at [email protected] or contact the KUMC Mis-sions Department for more information.
