becoming trapped between a fixed/ stationary object/ structure and a moving vehicle.

3. Cuts and bruising from slips, trips and falls due to uneven surfaces.

4. Eye irritation from windblown dust and particles.5. Injury to members of the public by failing to

barrier off or control access/egress to the public footpath if or when vehicles are entering/ exiting sites.

6. Sun burn from being exposed to ultra violet radiation.

7. Bodily injuries from being exposed to arduous weather conditions.

8. Secondary injuries due to visual impairments i.e. sunlight, moving from light to dark areas or via-versa.

9. Injuries/ verbal or physical abuse from aggressive drivers/ members of the public.

10. Chest complaints and dizziness from the inhalation of combustion fumes.

CONTROL MEASURES1. The banksmen must be competent and must have undergone specific training.2. The clients/Principal Contractors vehicle/pedestrian traffic plan must be followed in full.3. The need to reverse must be avoided wherever possible. 4. Vehicle routes must be established segregated from pedestrian routes.5. The distance vehicles have to reverse should be reduced where possible.6. The vehicle routes must be clear of material and debris.7. The banksman should always be in a position where they can be seen by the vehicle driver be it directly or

via a mirror.8. On no account must the banksman go onto the public highway and stop and regulate traffic.9. Non-essential persons must be excluded/ removed from the vehicle areas.10. Banksman must inform any persons present or in the vicinity of vehicles movements.11. The drivers of the vehicles must be made aware of any hazards present and must be briefed on the vehicle

routes to be taken.12. Reversing vehicles must activate their audible reversing alarms fitted.13. High visibility garments must be worn at all times.14. The banksman must use clear and concise signals. Refer to signals attached.

15. The banksman must always be in control and stand in a position of safety at all times.16. The banksman must always be aware of other vehicles in the area and must take these vehicles into account

when controlling the vehicle in question.17. Where vehicles are crossing or exiting onto a public footpath the banksman must erect suitable barriers and

signage to warn the public of the vehicle movements.18. Eye protection should be worn if there is a risk of excessive airborne dust/ debris.19. Pedestrians and non- site personnel should always be notified and stopped when vehicles are operating. 20. The banksman should never put themselves in a position where they could be trapped by the vehicle.21. Specific site procedures must be followed.22. The banksman must wear an orange high visibility vest. 23. The Client/ Principal Contractor must be kept informed as to changes or alterations that may be required to

improve traffic control.24. The Client/Principal Contractor must be informed of any changes made.25. Light eye protection must be worn which is appropriate to the nature of the work i.e. yellow lens glasses when

moving from light – dark areas. Anti –glare for working in bright sunny areas.26. Long sleeved clothes must be worn when working in extreme 9in direct sunlight).27. Encourage regular breaks and the drinking of water to prevent dehydration.28. Ensure all operatives are provided with the correct level of personal protective equipment for the task

especially in extreme or arduous temperatures (wet weather protection).29. Ensure there is adequate ventilation provided in loading bays if not extraction must be provided.30. Provide task lighting when natural light is not sufficient.
