Making food fun and interesting for kids increases the chances that they will
eat the foods, especially when the foods are new to them. Here are a few tips
for how to make food fun:
• Make food fun! Let your child prepare new foods. Playing games, singing
songs and reading books about food are great ways to make food fun!
• Keep offering new foods! It may take 8-12 times of seeing, playing with or
smelling a new food before your child will try it.
• Be a good role model. Your child learns how to eat new foods by watching
you, other adults and children eat. Try to eat at least one bite of foods that are
new to your child.
• Let your child choose new foods. Kids are more open to trying new foods
when they feel they have a choice. When shopping, let your child select a
new food from two or three food choices.
• Help your child learn about new foods. Talk about the color, shape, smell
and texture of the new food. It is okay if your child plays with or spits out
new foods because this is your child’s way of learning.
• Try offering one new food at a time. Include familiar foods with the new
foods and let your child serve himself/herself small portions. Offer new foods
at the beginning of meals and snacks when your child is most hungry.
• Avoid forcing your child to eat new foods. Kids like new foods less if they
are forced to eat them. Avoid using the “one bite” rule or making children
“clean their plate.”

This past spring, the River Ridge FFA Meat Evalua-
tion Team won the state contest and the opportunity to
represent Wisconsin at the National FFA convention in
October. The National FFA Convention was held Oc-
tober 30 through November 2 in Louisville, Kentucky.
The meat evaluation event was held at the University
of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. This event is
one of many educational activities at the National FFA
Convention and Expo in which FFA members apply
classroom knowledge to real life situations. The team
that competed was awarded a bronze rating.
Amanda and Brian Patterson received their American
Degrees, the highest degree one can be awarded by
the FFA, at the National Convention along with 3,578
other FFA members from around the nation.
While the group was in Louisville and Lexington they
attended many other learning activities including zip
lining underground, toured the University of Ken-
tucky and watching a horse race at Churchill Downs.
They also attended the fi rst and the eighth general
sessions and learned many life lessons while listening
to the keynote speakers.

tion attendees: Makoy Retallick, Michelle Cliff, Lo-

10TH Grade Plan (Pre-ACT) - Tenth graders took
part in ACT’s PLAN program on Tuesday, December
3, 2013, at River Ridge High School. PLAN, which
is often taken in preparation for the ACT, includes
academic tests, survey of interests and an assessment
of study skills knowledge. PLAN also provides an
estimated ACT score which will help them in their
goal setting. If a student is undecided, PLAN can put
some focus into their future.
As a follow-up to the PLAN assessment, there is a
mandatory interpretation session called, “Many Paths
to Success” for parents and students. Paul Weeks, a
former admissions counselor and fi nancial aid advi-
sor and now currently employed with ACT, will give
you all of the current information needed to help your
son or daughter plan for post-high school education.
Please join us on Wednesday, January 29, 2014, at
7:00 p.m. in the high school multipurpose room. It
is required that students along with one parent attend
this presentation.
Financial Aid Night - There will be a fi nancial aid
meeting on Wednesday, January 22, 2014, at 7:00
p.m. in the high school multipurpose room. Joy Kite
from Southwest Technical College will help you
through the maze of the application process.
If you plan on fi ling electronically, the Federal Student
Aid Department has introduced the preapplication work-
sheet. These are also available in the guidance offi ce to
use in preparation for completing the FAFSA application
on the web. This will allow you to have your answers
ready before going online.
Parents of juniors are also invited to attend. The applica-
tion will focus on this year’s seniors; however, it is never
too early to start learning about the fi nancial aid process.
Friends Helping Friends – The Friends Helping Friends
group fi nished their two-day training in Lancaster.
Members wrote and planned their lessons on friendship,
peer pressure and tolerance education and came back to
River Ridge to present in the classrooms.
8th Grade Registration – Registration for next year’s
freshmen will take place Wednesday, January 15, 2014,
at 7:00 p.m. in the River Ridge High School multipur-
pose room. All eighth graders and at least one parent or
guardian must attend.

Ms. Deanna Gursky from Tucson, Arizona donated a doll to each girl and a
ball to each boy in kindergarten. These toys are donated in memory of her
late mother, Mary Alice (Tyler) Gursky, who was born November 4, 1913,
in a large limestone building at the edge of Bloomington. Mary Alice and
her siblings attended the old Rock School in Bloomington. They were
a poor family and Mary Alice didn’t even have a doll. This is how Ms.
Deanna Gursky came to us with these gifts to honor her mother.
On behalf of the River Ridge Wellness Club and Spanish Club, I am pleased
to say that the fi rst zombie run was “spooktacular”! The zombie run was
held on Tuesday, October 29, from 6:00- 7:00 p.m. The students in the
Wellness Club and Spanish Club dressed in their zombie best and hid on
the school trail, “Run the Ridge.” The runners then came down the trail
trying not to get tagged by the zombies to survive the run! We had a great
turnout for the fi rst year and are looking forward to doing it again next year.
We would like to say thank you to the people who came to the run and our
spooky zombies. We hope to see you next year!

River Ridge athletics is in full swing as both
boys’ and girls’ basketball, wrestling and
dance have all taken part in their fi rst com-
petition or event. Make sure you get out and
support River Ridge athletics as well as all
other cocurricular events.
Already this season, we have some early
schedule changes. Due to their state foot-
ball appearance, the Lancaster boys’ games
that were scheduled for November 21 have
been moved to January 6. Due to the lack of
numbers in the girls’ program, Cassville and
Seneca will not be able to have a JV team this
season; therefore the varsity games versus
these teams will start at 7:00. We are work-
ing to set a tournament for our JV girls so they
can replace their lost contests. The Wauzeka
boys’ team will not have a JV, so we will play
Lancaster’s freshmen boys on that night in-
stead. Be prepared for many more changes
throughout the winter as weather conditions
begin to worsen. Too stay up to date use the
website to see all schedules. Be sure to sign
up for NOTIFY ME toward the top right of the
screen. You will get updates as I make them.
You can receive them via email or text.
Good luck to all athletes the rest of the regular
season. If you have any questions or concerns
regarding River Ridge athletics, please feel
free to contact me at the high school. Have a
great December! GO TIMBERWOLVES!
