T w e l v e - y e a r - o l d Ayelet Bar-David stood in the center of the stage at the

Riverdale YM-YWHA, a single spotlight illuminating her as she waited patiently for her cue.

The notes from the piano drifted through the quiet, crowded auditorium, and when it came time, Ayelet’s voice soared, accompanied only by the piano, as she sang the opening lyrics of The Bea-tles’ “Let it Be.”

“When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me, speaking words of wisdom, let it be.”

A sense of excitement was palpable in the audience as the refrain of the famous song grew near, and then bam! The stage lights blazed and each instrument of the eight-person band chimed in, causing the crowd to roar with applause.

It was a mature perfor-mance from the mostly pre-teen Riverdale band known as Liquid Ice, and for many of its musicians, their first taste of rock stardom. And boy did they rock.

Their renditions of such classics as Buffalo Spring-field’s “For What It’s Worth” and Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama” had their big-gest fans — mostly their par-ents — dancing in the aisles, and, what’s more, helped raise several hundred dollars for the Y’s theater program.

Sunday’s concert, Kids Rock for a Cause, was the brainchild of Riverdale resi-dent and musician Jeremy Bar-Illan, who has proven quite adept at raising funds for good causes by using tal-ented musicians.

F or the past three years, his Purple Hat Foundation has raised money for the

North-Shore-Long Island Jew-ish Health System Founda-tion and Musicians on Call, an organization that sends musi-cians to the bedsides of sick patients in hospitals across the country.

This is the first of what he hopes to be many concerts at the Riverdale Y performed by young, aspiring musicians.

“The support we’re getting from the community is huge,” Mr. Bar-Illan said. “And the kids are having a blast.”

Mr. Bar-Illan, who runs a “School of Rock,” worked with the Riverdale band — com-posed of Ayelet, lead vocals and guitar; Aura Glaser, 12, lead vocals and percussion; In-bal Katz, 12, lead guitar and vo-cals; Henry Bernstein, 12, lead guitar; Elitzur Bergman, 14, rhythm guitar; Michael Adler, 13, rhythm guitar; Shamma Pepper-Fox, 12, keyboards; Eli Landes, 12, drums; and Julian Bar-Illan, 18, bass — as well as another band from White Plains, N.Y., which also per-formed on Sunday.

They met every Sunday for several months. Mr. Bar-Illan said the experience not only improves the kids’ music skills, he said, but also gives them an opportunity to do so while helping a good cause.

“We all really enjoy it,” said Ayelet, a student at Salanter Akiba Riverdale Academy.

Mr. Bar-Illan said his bud-ding rock stars will take a short break, and then begin rehearsing in a few weeks for their next concert.

Skyview-on-Hudson, the mammoth resort-like complex of co-op apart-

ments, was built half a century ago, but this three-bedroom three-bath unit at 5900 Ar-lington Ave. is so new, you’d expect the paint to come off on your clothing if you brush against the wall.

Every detail of the loft-like space was carefully considered and beautifully executed from newly installed flooring to an open gourmet kitchen — with granite countertops, cherry wood cabinetry and up-to-the minute appliances — to design-er bathrooms, custom designed closets, built-in bookcases and radiator covers, recessed light-ing and crown mouldings.

This combined unit fea-tures a large living room and dining area and it is easily convertible to a four bedroom home. The bathrooms are even equipped with Bose in-wall speakers.

There is an area for an of-fice or playroom, a double sized balcony and plenty of windows and natural light.

The full-service complex features a health club, an Olympic pool, a dog run and free shuttle service to Met-roNorth trains. Indoor and outdoor parking is available.

According to broker Linda Lepson of Argo Residential, the asking price is $629,000. Maintenance is $2,180 per month.

A good cook always has a few solid recipes in her back pocket. Here’s one of mine. A simple, easy-to-make tomato sauce.

Once you’ve got it down, this five-ingredient sauce has all sorts of applications. Toss it with penne and fresh basil, spoon it over roasted grilled fish and chicken, simmer with homemade meatballs or spoon some over grilled fresh ba-guette for a rustic crostini.

The key is using quality San Marzano canned whole toma-toes (yes, canned tomatoes are wonderful and consistent), a great quality olive oil and fresh garlic and onion. Then use your palate to season accordingly with salt. I like to use to some bright red pepperoncini flakes to give the sauce more flavor, but the amount of heat you pre-fer is adjustable.

I like to make a big batch (just quadruple the recipe) on Sunday that can be portioned and frozen for a rainy day.

QUICK TOMATO SAUCEYields about 1 Quart.

good quality olive oil, as needed

1 28 oz. can whole peeled San Marzano tomatoes*

1 small or 1/2 medium onion, diced finely

5 small garlic cloves, minced

1/4 tsp.-1/2 tsp. pepperoncini* flakes

kosher or sea salt

In a medium saucepot, heat a few Tbsp. of olive oil over me-dium heat.

Add the onion, garlic and pepperoncini flakes and cook about 3 to 4 minutes or until until fragrant. Monitor the heat to make sure the garlic does not turn brown and add oil as needed to keep the mixture glistening.

Add 2 Tbsps. of water and al-low to evaporate before adding the tomatoes. I find this helps to soften the onions a bit for a more palatable sauce.

Add the juices from the can of tomatoes into the pot and while that mixture begins to simmer, prepare the tomatoes. Deseed the tomatoes by pop-ping them and give them a little rinse. The seeds create more acidity in the sauce so make

sure to follow this step. Give the tomatoes a nice

rough chop on a cutting board and transfer all of the flesh and juices to the pot. Season with a good pinch of salt and simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring and tasting occasionally.

At this point you may sea-son, and if you find the sauce a little bit acidic, add a pinch or two of sugar to balance.

Serve immediately or cool

down over an ice bath and re-frigerate or freeze. The sauce will keep for up to a month in the freezer or up to four days in the refrigerator.

*Cook’s Note: Pepperon-cini flakes are the red pep-per flakes typically found at the pizza place. If yours look brown or rust colored, they are old! Discard and buy a new bottle.

VOLUNTEERS over the age of 55 are sought by the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of the Community Service Society to help other seniors, free of charge, with their federal and state in-come tax returns.

Bilingual volunteers proficient in English and another language are especially needed.

The program is run through the Tax Counseling for the Elder-ly, which provides volunteers with 40 hours of free training and cer-tification by the Internal Revenue Service. A week-long training ses-sion by the IRS will be scheduled for the month of January. Once certified, each volunteer is ex-pected to serve at least four hours a week through April 15th at a lo-cal site. Tax counseling services are offered at libraries, senior centers and community organi-zations. Volunteers will receive partial reimbursement for travel to and from their counseling as-signments and training sessions.

RSVP is a nonprofit organiza-tion that has placed some 10,000 volunteers aged 55 and over in assignments with more than 600 organizations throughout the five boroughs.

To register for training, or for more information, call 718-295-7940.

TV TRAINING: The BRONXNET public access tele-vision station invites Bronx resi-dents to learn how to produce a television show. Thanks to BRONXNET’s television produc-tion training workshops, Bronx-ites have had the opportunity to learn how to produce a TV show in the studio or out on location since 1994. After completing an eight-week course, students be-come certified public access pro-ducers, making them eligible to utilize the station’s equipment to produce their very own program.

The programs are then shown on BRONXNET channels 68, 69 and 70. Production experts with years of experience in the televi-sion industry teach the classes.

Call 718-960-1180 to register.
