There’s something different about Elisa Contemporary Art this holiday season.

Since opening in 2008, the gal-lery has been known for show-casing abstract art from new artists from around the coun-try.

But its new exhibit is full of what you might find in a stock-ing on Christmas morning: match box cars, Pez dispens-ers, action figures, dinosaurs and crayons.

Running through Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, the gallery, lo-cated at 5622 Mosholu Ave., is showing A Toy Story and Other Delights.

“As I was putting up this show it just made me smile. It made me feel very good,” said the gallery’s owner Lisa Coo-per.

“There’s a magical quality in it.”

The art in the show is “hy-per-realist,” according to Ms. Cooper. She said she was in-spired by the Virginia artist Megan Marlatt’s oil paintings of toys, including monsters, Pinnochio and piles of chil-dren’s playthings.

To celebrate the holidays, she decided to round up other

artists with work focusing on toys for an end-of-the year show. It includes Ms. Marlatt’s work, as well Allan Innman’s paintings of match box cars and toy soldiers, Peter and Mad-

eline Powell’s Hello Kitty Pez dispenser and life-like crayons and James Kao’s colorful fig-ures and mushrooms.

The Powells, an artist cou-ple from Hawaii, take as many

as 72 photos of their pieces in order to come up with the right angles on which to base their paintings.

“We enjoy taking the little things out of everyday life and

giving them the prominence and importance they had when we were children. Our paint-ings invoke the childhood spir-it that everyday life has buried deep within us,” the couple stated in a release on the show.

The show also changed shape after superstorm Sandy. Ms. Cooper said she wanted to put together a toy drive along with other local institutions to benefit children living in the affected areas. She ran into Karenbeatrice Porcher, the leader of Brownie Girl Scout Troop 1477, which was also starting a toy drive to collect donations for Sandy victims. The toy drives became com-bined and the girl scouts have been picking up donations at many local organizations and businesses intended for children living in evacuation shelters on Staten Island. Last week, the girl scouts picked up about 20 toys from the gal-lery, which added to the more than 200 toys they have col-lected so far.

Through Saturday, Dec. 15, Elisa Contemporary Art is col-lecting toys for Sandy victims. The toys should be new and unwrapped, and should not be plush toys. The gallery is also donating a portion of sales to the American Red Cross and Save the Children.

If Beauty and the Beast were a true story, Gaston would have drunk eggnog.

Made with heavy doses of bourbon and raw eggs, ‘nog is the most macho thing ever to be topped with a dash of nut-meg. Sure whiners point to the bilious color, viscosity and heightened salmonella risk as evidence that the nectar of San-ta has no place in modern tum-mies, but neither does sneaking into peoples’ homes, and that hasn’t stopped Santa.

I wait all year for eggnog to appear in the grocery store. Each winter, there are few hap-pier moments than the first time I see a festive eggnog carton nestled amid the stan-dard humdrum milk products, reminding them that with some help, they can achieve more.

The supermarket stuff is fine in a pinch, but those who have had fresh eggnog know the carton variety only resem-bles the real thing.

Yolks, milk, vanilla, and your favorite winter spices combine over the stove to make a deli-cious and thick ‘nog on their own, but the addition of home-made whipped cream — made of cream, egg whites (optional) and sugar — adds an airiness that cartons can’t contain.

Later, if you’ve got a bunch of leftover eggnog because the people at your party weren’t awesome enough to finish it, don’t worry, use it in your pan-cake mix in the morning or even make some eggnog fudge.

Disclaimer: This recipe calls for raw eggs, which have been known to contain salmonella or other bacteria.

GRAHAM’S FAMOUS EGG NOG

2 Cups milk 3/4 Cup sugar 3/4 Cup bourbon 3 Tbsps. dark rum 4 eggs, separated 1 Cup heavy creampinch of salt 1 tsp. vanilla extract or

1 vanilla bean1 stick cinnamon (optional)2 cloves (optional)ground nutmeg and cinnamonDash allspice (optional) 1. Separate egg yolks and

whites into two bowls. The whites are called for in a later step, but are optional. If using, keep them in a fridge. (If you have room, put the whites in a large metal mix-ing bowl, such as the one that comes with a Kitchenaid mixer. A cold bowl will make whisking the eggs with cream in step 6 significantly easier.)

2. Put milk, 1/2 cup of the sug-ar, salt, cinnamon stick or other spices and either vanilla extract or 1 split and scraped vanilla bean* into a medium saucepan (see be-low for instructions on preparing bean). Heat over medium heat, stirring, until mixture is just be-low simmering. DO NOT LET IT BOIL. As mixture approaches simmer, lower temperature. Cook for about 8 minutes, taste to make sure the sugar has dissolved. Re-move from heat.

3. Whisk egg yolks until lemon-colored. Now it’s time to temper the eggs. Slowly whisk the milk mixture into the yolks. Take your time with this or you’ll end up with chunks of slightly cooked egg!

4. Put the mixture back in the saucepan and heat, again to just below simmer, stirring constantly for five to seven min-utes. When the mixture is thick enough to coat a spoon, stop im-mediately. This is the most criti-cal stage in your eggnog prep. If the mixture boils you’ll end up with egg custard. Worth noting: that egg custard is delicious, but not what we’re aiming for today.

5. Strain into a large serving container (I use a pitcher, but a bowl is just fine). Let cool to room temperature and add li-quor. Place in refrigerator and wait until cold, at least an hour.

6. Add cream to the egg whites in the mixing bowl and whisk until combined. Using a kitchenaid mixer or hand mixer whisk on high speed, gradually adding remaining sugar. Stop when first moist peaks form. Pour into the egg-liquor mix-ture and mix well.

Serve in a cup topped with ground cinnamon and nutmeg. Think about how cool you are for drinking whiskey and eggs at the same time.

*To prepare a vanilla bean: using a sharp knife, split pod down the middle, cutting just enough to avoid splitting the bean in two. Working from the incision, peel back the folds to reveal miniscule black seeds. Using the back of a knife or

the tip of a teaspoon, scrape the seeds out of the been and put into the milk mixture along with the opened bean.
