    The idea of writing a novel was hatched during ameeting of Filipinos in the house of PedroPaterno in Madrid on January 4,1884 when Rizalproposed writing one about the Philippines.

    His proposal was welcomed by Pedro Maximino.Antonio Paterno, Graciano Lopez-Jaena, evaristoAguirre. Eduardo de Lete, Julio Llorente and

    Valentin Ventura.

    This novel was inspired by Harriet BeecherStowes Uncle Toms Cabin which was about the

    cruelties of American slave-owners.

    He began writing the novel in Madrid towardsthe end of 1884 and completed it while staying

    in Germany by the end of 1886.

    The arrival of his friend Maximo Viola savedthe novel from destruction. He lent Rizal 300

    pesos which made possible the printing of 300copies.

    Rizal gave Viola the gallery proofs of the Noli

    Me Tangere with an autograph saying,

    To my dear friend, Maximo Viola, the first to

    read and appreciate my work Jose Rizal

    The title of the novel means do not

    touch me in Latin.

    According to Rizal, it was taken fromthe gospel of Luke. Actually, Rizal was

    mistaken. It should be from the gospelof St. John Chapter 20, verses 13-17

    Rizal dedicated the novel to the

    Philippines in which he warned of asocial cancer and that exposing the illsof society

    He aimed to portray the conditions of the

    Philippines and expose the widespreadarrogance of the friars, governmentofficials and their corruption

    It also aimed to portray the complacencyof the Filipinos and the lost of theirnative identity.

    It aimed to unite the Filipino people byopening their eyes to the existing socialand economic conditions.

    1. Kapitan Tiago

    - the novel begins with a party in the home of Kapitan

    Tiago in honor of Juan Crisostomo Ibara y Magsalin

    who had just completed seven years study in Europe.

    2. Tax collector

    - Don Rafael accidentally killed the tax collector and

    was consequently sent to prison where he died.

    3. Elias

    - Elias saved Ibarra from being crushed as the derrick

    bearing the heavy stone collapsed and the would- beassassin was killed. Ibarra was nearly killed when hewas sealing the cornerstone with cement

    4. Father Damaso

    -During the following evening, Damaso continued to

    slander the memory of Ibarras father. Because of this,

    Ibarra grabbed Fr. Damaso and took hold a knife and wasabout to dispatch the friar

    5. Don Tiburcio de Espadana

    -a dubious Spanish physician who was married to Dona

    Victorina, a Filipina who looks down with her fellow

    indios

    6. Alfonso Linares de Espadana

    -Tiburcios cousin and god-son of Damaso. He wasactually penniless peninsular in search of rich heiress and

    a fortune

    7. Basilio

    - son of Sisa and brother of Crispin. His brother was accusedof stealing from the church collection while he managed to

    escape from the evil Chief Sacristan.8. Balat

    -elder son of Elias grandfather who became a feared banditand later was captured and cut off his head which was hung

    from a tree

    9. Dona Consolacion

    - mistress of the Spanish Alferez who had a fight with DonaVictorina. It was Father Salvi who came and made them stop

    10. Maria Clara

    - She gave Ibarras letter for her to the authorities which wereused as evidence against him. She revealed that his letters were

    exchange for the letter from her late mother, Pia Alba

    Blumentritt wrote that the novel

    was written with the blood of thehear and so the hear also speaks.

    The friars called the novel- impious,heretic and unpatriotic

    Rizal wrote after he visited the

    Philippines in1887 that he wasmalign.

    In his letter to Blumentritt:

    My book made a lot of noise; everywhere, I amasked about it. They wanted to anathematize me

    [to excommunicate me] because of it I am

    considered a German spy, an agent of Bismarck,

    they say I am a Protestant, a free mason, a

    sorcerer, a damned soul, and evil. It is whispered

    that I want to draw plans, that I have a foreign

    passport and that I wander through the streets bynight
