Perhaps only few Orthodox around the world know that September is not just the ninth month of the year but that it is primarily the commencementofthe eccles i-

characterize the essence of the Church decisively -Cross-named, Cross-forming, Cross-minded. Let us examine these three descriptions a little more analytically.

a) The Church is Cross-named not only because Her name is derived from Christ (the letter X in Christ's Greek name XplaTo~ is, of course, a Cross) but also because the term "Church" or "Ecclesia" which means assembly, encounter, communion, contains within it the meaning of the Cross. Don't we call the meeting-point of various roads a {(crossroad"? Don/t we also call the encounter of the two genders for the perpetuation of their species "cross-breeding''? The Cross, therefore, is an encounter and every encounter is a type of cross or crucifixion.

b) The Church is Cross-forming because all things celebrated and effected in the life of the Church are sanctified by the sign of the Cross. We don't only com­mence the day by making the sign of the Cross. We also make the sign of the Cross before and after every serious activity - the monks of Mt. Athos don't even drink a glass of water without making the sign of the Cross! Moreso, we use the Crass as a mark of distinction on Our buildings, on our vestments, in our liturgical movements and on Church vessels: a Cross is shaped not only by "cruciform church buildings with a dome" but also by "basilica-style" rectangular churches whose longitudi­nal interior liturgically branches into the Holy Altar, the right and left Choirs and the Narthex. Furthermore we see the Cross on the "poly-crossed" materials of holy vestments and even in the manner with which they are girded and worn - from the stole of the Deacon (orar­ion) to that of the Bishop (omophorion). Don't the Bishop's candleabra (dikirotrikira) also form a Cross? When the fingers of the Priest or Bishop join in order to give a blessing, don't they form a Cross? So, therefore, the structure of and our movement in the Church is cross"forming just as our body is naturally cross-forming when we extend our arms. For this reason finally even our sleep in the tomb is guarded by an upright Crass which keeps vigil like an armed soldier.

c) The Church is Cross-minded. In other words it is not only Her name and form which are cross-like but also Her mind, Her conscience (phronema). If the Cross of Christ was the medium through which God effected the reconciliation of man, then there is no doubt that everything in the life of the Church aspires to and is dictated by this reconciliation. From this we understand why that, which in the New Testament is epigrammati­cally characterized as "the ministry of reconciliation" (2 Cor. 5:18), assumes such a central position. So Cross and reconciliation are almost equivalent meanings. Conse­quently, the mind of the Church can also be called cross-like. This fundamental truth is expressed excel­lently in the Dismissal Hymn of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross where "the people of God" and their "common­wealth" become directly dependent on the precioUS and life-giving Cross:

The Place and Form of Doctrine in the Orthodox Church *

The problem expressed in this title is of 'such nature that we regard it necessary to examine it in the following two paragraphs:

A. The theological complexity of the theme B. Forms and priorities in the Doctrine of the

orthodox Church

A. The theological complexity of the theme It is common ground among all Christians

regardless of time and denomination - that Christian doctrine is not a system of theoretical principles, which can tie studied and learnt. Christian doctrine is rather a rule (canon) of life and salvation which must be experienced step by step. It is precisely for this reason that Christian doctrine, which derives from the Divine Revelation and as such has absolute and eternal validity, affects directly or indirectly even the slightest details of everyday life.

Therefore, whenever two Christian Churches or denominations start responsibly bilateral theological discussions, it is not only natural but necessary that they examine together the three most important areas of Church life, in which the main characteristics of each denomination are expressed in the most authen­tic and vivid way. These three central areas of Church life are:

1. The Dogma and the general doctrine concern~ ing Faith and Morals.

2. The structure and articulation of Church life and

3. The worship and liturgical life, in general.

• This speech was delivered by His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos of Australia during the Dialogue between the Greek Orthodox and the Uniting Church on 21st September 1983.

Analysing the basic truths expressed in this Dismis­sal Hymn as simply and plainly as possible we observe the following noteworthy points:-

1. The people belong to God - not to anyone else, nor even to themselves. And the people are God's not only through the act of Creation but also through the act of Adoption. The first act renders the people God's creation, the second act renders them His inheritance.

2. The Church recognizes and respects the particu­lar mission of Civil Leaders and therefore prays separ­ately and officially for them.

3. "Commonwealth" for Christians is not a form of rule or government (democratic, oligarchic, totalitarian, etc) but above all a way of thinking and living-in other words a mind and conscience (phronema) which pre­judicates the "life and conduct" of each one of us.

From these three fundamental observations it can be deduced that the basic jurisdiction of rulers and those

At any rate, the significance of the above areas becomes evi­dent from the fact that it is precisely in these th ree fields that the most fundamental misunderstandings and most substantial- and therefore, most dangerous - distortions of christian life have taken place throughout the centuries. So it can be said that when christian life radically fails in these crucial areas, then in general, the following picture results.

a) Bearing in mind that the main purpose of Dogma is to safeguard our identity, throughout time, with the Church established by Jesus Christ, and at the same time to guarantee our salvation, we must admit that Dogma results in a sterile intellectualism and god­less solipsism, as soon as it ceases to be the centripetal compass of Tradition, which leads "through the door into the sheepfold" (John 10, 1).

b) Again, bearing in mind that as soon as the structure and articulation of Church life ceases to be an instrument of diaconia to facilitate by all means the cultivation of the whole body of the Church and, through it, of the entire creation by the power of the Holy Spirit, forthesanctification and transfiguration of the entire universe - which is the ultimate goal of the Revelation -, we must admit that this instrument becomes an impediment, bureaucracy, routine and static institutionalism .

c) Also bearing in mind that worship and liturgical

under their rule is demarcated in the presence of God for Whom all of us constitute His people and inherit­ance. In other words, in the Christian Commonwealth where all things are placed in a new order, ('in the new commonwealth that bears Thy name" - Kontakion of the Holy Cross), rulers avail the Cross as "a weapon of peace" and thereby become crusaders for a reconcilia­tion far deeper and far more substantial than could be promised by any economist, statesman or politiciaan in the world. In such an order of affairs neither the rulers nor those under their authority dare·to shake the foun­dations or to set new foundations there where, since the creation of the world, Christ is the foundation and cor­nerstone (Eph. 2:20). All these matters are very contem­porary for our faithful people who are the blessed "inheritance" of God; especially in recent times when, because of the entry of Greece into the European Eco­nomic Community (E.E.C) and because of other related sociopolitical experimentations, they must remember that their "citizenship" is God-given and God­protected. Therefore we will never cease to pray:

"0 Lord, save Thy People ... protecting Thy commonwealth through Thy Cross".

life in general should always lead us to a participation "by grace" in the life of the Holy Trinity, so that we may become "partakers of divine nature" (2 Peter 1, 4), we must admit that worship results in tedious ritualism, if not gross idolatrous magic and superstition, as soon as it ceases to be a doxological humility, according to the "Christ-like ethos" (XPloTO€/l5b; li80,), as Nicolaos Cabasilas, our great theologian and Saint of the 14th Century emphasises.

From what has been said above, it becomes clear that the three mentioned sensitive areas are deeply inter-related, as different expressions of one and the same thing. And it is precisely in this interaction that lies the complexity of our theme. So we can easily say that, under normal circumstances, it is impossible for Christian life to fail radically in one of the said areas, without similar and immediate consequences in the other two areas. In other words, it is impossible for Church's dogma to be Orthodox when its worship or structure is heretical. It is precisely for this reason that the Pharisaic, conventional Orthodoxy in dogma is never sufficient for the Church of Christ, unless it is accompanied by living worship and correct life. And the whole struggle, and at the same time the tempta­tion of Orthodoxy throughout the centuries, was always a q'uestion of how to preserve the salutary bal ance between discipline and freedom, For in the last analysis, Orthodoxy never had to face the problem, as a dilemma, between Law and Justice on the one hand and Grace and Gospel on the other, as was the case in the West. For the Orthodox Church, Grace and Gospel is certainly the essence and the content of the Chris­tian message, but this message could not be effectively transmitted to the people, without some concrete form of Justice and Law.

B, Forms and priorities in the teaching of the Orthodox Church

In general, the teaching of the Orthodox Church concerns, on the one hand, the Faith, and, on the other, the Morals, Both depend on fundamental principles, which directly or indirectly derive, as we have already said, from divine Revelation. In principle we must accept that since these fundamental rules have a com­mon source, they are equally binding for the faithful, regardless of whether they refer to Faith or Morals. Nevertheless, the content of Faith mainly consist of truths above reason, namely of articles concerning the nature of God and his relationship with the world and with man. On the contrary, the content of Morals mainly consists of the immediate logical consequen­ces which the dogmatic teaching concerning God and the world has upon man. Therefore, if Morals is the consequence of Faith, then we already have a first differentiation not only in the content and form, but also in the theological weight and priority between Faith and Morals. It is precisely for this reason that the decisions of the Ecumenical Synods bear one name when they refer to the Faith and another when they refer to the Morals. As it is known, in the first case they are called "Definitions", and in the second case they are called "Canons".

However, since the dogmatical Definitions of the Ecumenical Synods, are usually called "Dogmas", it is necessary to point out that the word "Dogma" has a broader content than that of the word "Definition ", and consequently the "Definitions" of the Ecumenical Syn­ods do not exhaust the content of the Faith. On the one hand, "Definitions" are God-inspired guide-lines and on the other, they are for the faithful safety­boundaries, preventing them from falling into heresy. Yet it must be pointed out with all clarity that "Dogma': signifies the entire teaching and conscience of the Church for a fundamental chapter of Faith (the "Trinit, arian dogma", the "Christological dogma", the Pneu­matological dogma", the "Ecclesiological dogma", the "Soteriological dogma" etc.). Therefore, such breadth, of necessity, cannot be achieved by any "Definition"of , an Ecumenical Synod, which as is well known was formulated due to concrete hi~torical reasons, at ~ given time and with a defined terminology,

Nevertheless, what we have said .. bove does noi permit us to suppose that we suggest a relativisation 01 the "Definitions" of the Ecumenical Synods, whose validity is absolute. And this is because the Orthodox Church never understood the development of Dogma according to the evolutionary manner of Western' theology (the known theory of Dogmenentwicklung) l The only relativity of the "Definitions" of the Ecumeni­cal Synods must be understood in the spirit of the Pauline words "in part we know and in part we pro" shesy" (1 Cor. 13,9). .

Yet this relativity refers not only to individual "Definitions" but also to the entire content of the con­science of the Church, for as long as it still remains in its militant form.

If, however, a first differentiation was the fact that we have to distinguish between Faith and Morals, then a second differentiation of a lighter nature must be made even within the content of the Faith alone.

In principle, we Orthodox naturally believe that the articles of Faith cannot be divided into those of prim­ary and of secondary importance.

Nevertheless, a more careful observation convinces us that the theological weight of the Trinitarian Dogma (and the related Dogmas of Christo logy and Pneu ma-

. to logy) is greater than that of the immediately depend ent Dogmas of Ecclesiology and Soteriology and all the related cosmological and anthropological doc­trines of the Church.

The same can be said about the content of th e Orthodox Moral Principles: Though all of them have basically the same validity as deriving from the same divine Revelation, we must again acknoweledge a dis­tinction between Principles of primary importance and others derived from and dependent on them.
