Dear Friends,

I remember as a child being told, “if you want to get on in life,

you need to master the 3 R’s”. Reading, wRiting and aRithmetic”.

There is no doubt that the 3 R’s make a good basis for growth in

education. In the same way the 3 R’s make a good platform for

growth in the Church. In this instance the 3 R’s are

Recommitment, Reconciliation and Renewal.

We need to be “recommitted” to the work of God in our

everyday lives. Showing God’s love in action in what we ourselves

do.

We also need to live out the “reconciling” nature of the gospel

within our own lives. In other words to live with a love for

others like the love which God has for us.

It is our bound and duty both as a gathered community and as

individuals to be constantly open to God’s “renewing” Spirit,

enabling change and transformation into that which God wants us

to be.

The “3 R’s” should be encompassed into a threefold framework.

1) The Church needs to be a seven day a week Church

(both people and building). We can’t afford to let our faith

be restricted to one day a week. It must be a 24 hours a

day, seven days a week faith.

Page 4: Honley with Brockholes Parish Magazine …btckstorage.blob.core.windows.net/site887/Mag 2008...T L Dallas & Co Ltd 29 Westgate Honley Holmfirth HD9 6AA Telephone: 01484 665211 Contact:

2

2) Spirituality must be the heartbeat of Church life.

The Church needs to be a regular praying community.

A Church that does not have God at its centre is no

different from any other secular club.

3 As a Church we must encourage one another. It’s

important to build up and encourage each other in our

own individual ministries. Ministry is not something

that is done only by the Vicar, it is something that

each and everyone of us needs to be involved in as

members of the Body of Christ. It is through mutual

building up and encouraging one another that the body

of Christ will grow.

Over the next few years the Church at large will go through

some major changes, some of which will affect us here in

this parish. In what way we will be affected is not certain

at this moment in time; but as and when these things come

to light, I will do my utmost to ensure you are kept

informed.

One thing is for certain: we need to keep focussed on God.

If we hold fast to the 3”R”s - Recommitment, Reconciliation

and Renewal and the subsequent framework it will enable

us to do that.

With Love in Christ’s service

David

HONLEY NEWS

Our gathering in October was rather more quiet and contemplative than usual as our subject was "The Power of Prayer". Thank you to all who came and entered so well into the spirit of the meeting Bags for Babies are needed at New Hall Prison for the up and running Mother and Baby Unit. There are lists of the articles needed in Church and in the Parish Room and there is a carrier bag in Church to put your items in under our notice board. Thinking of babies, we congratulate Jean Chadwick and Margaret Wainwright who have a brand new granddaughter apiece. Jean Swann and I will be going to a Mothers' Union Council meeting at Dewsbury Town Hall on Tuesday the 4th of November and a Deanery meeting at St. Michael and St. Helen's, Quarry Hill on Monday the 17th of November. Any member who would like to join us is welcome as there will be room in the car for two other people or three if one of them is little and thin. At our November meeting I shall be talking about my impressions of Singapore, with an emphasis on family life. I know it is early days but may I mention that your Annual Subscriptions will be due in January. Please make every effort to get them to our Treasurer in plenty of time as that will be such a help to her. Our Christmas Party will be held on Wednesday, December 3rd at 7.30 pm in the Parish Room. Mesdames Swann and Adams are catering so it should be a good do! Cost will be £4. Please let Jean Swann know if you want to come. Thank you.

Harvest...red flannel vest...and fur lined boots

The editorial deadline is looming and I am writing this just after we have sung: ‘All is safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin’ and the sun in streaming down - a rarity, a beautiful warm day. But harvest is over and it really does mean that, like it or not, it is time to turn our attention to Christmas and to St Mary’s Street Market. In fact St Mary’s fifth Street Market which will be held on Saturday 6th December from 10.30 am to 4.00 pm. This year we have been granted permission to use not only Church Street but also part of St Mary’s Road so that we can accommodate even more stalls with even more choice - there certainly will be something new and something different. Those who were disappointed last year by too many over zealous requests to buy raffle tickets should notice a welcome difference this year. Grange Moor Brass Band are with us again as part of our free entertainment in Church. New faces and sounds will be provided by local talent including music from the Robertson Family Quartet, Holmfirth Music Centre Wind Band with gospel singing from True Colours as well as delicate sounds from St Mary’s Handchime Group. So, what are you doing to help? If you are not able to, have you asked a neighbour, relative of friend if they will help on your behalf? Sign up (or sign them up) on the lists at the back of Church. We need all the help we can get on both Friday and Saturday. Have you offered anything that can be sold on one of St Marys’ stalls? Large or small, edible or not we can use it. If it needs collecting just let us know. And on Saturday 6th December between

10.30 am and 4.00 pm? Put on your red flannel vest, fur lined boots and come and help us make it a day to remember!

St Mary’s DCC Report 16 September 2008 There were 14 members present at the meeting which opened with prayers at 7.30 pm. Under Matters Arising it was reported that the DAC had approved the colour Rosewood for the upholstery of the new chairs and that work was due to start on the repairs to the Organ Loft roof on the following Monday. The family of Marjorie Booth had agreed that the donation in her memory could be used towards the cost of a new church notice board. The design and location of this has still to be decided. Mr Stuart Beaumont, a partner in One17 Design of Armitage Bridge, had been interviewed by the Vicar and Churchwardens and the DCC agreed to offer him the post of Church Architect. John Dean reported that the church website was being up-dated. Clive Waind agreed to investigate the availability of permanent “No Parking” signs for the area by the church gate. Kevin Radford outlined the problem causing water to leak in where the vestry meets the main church building and was asked to investigate the cost of repairs. The “Investing in Faith” Initiative formed a major agenda item. A letter produced by the two Archdeacons giving details of the programme up to Easter 2009 was read out. The Vicar then read a letter from the Bishop outlining plans and possible outcomes of an exercise to examine the structure of deaneries with their clergy and buildings (Almondbury Deanery could lose 2 clergy). Plans for the future are to be agreed by Easter 2009 with consultation taking place between now and then. Considerable discussion took place, during which there was general agreement that the whole ‘initiative’ was looking to make cuts rather than encourage growth – a defeatist attitude! It was agreed that this was the message that St Mary’s representatives should take to any consultation meetings.

The following matters came up under Correspondence and Any Other Business:

• The roof gutters had been cleaned at a cost of £185 • An invitation had been received from the Rev Ron

Whittingham inviting people to attend a Mass in celebration of his 40 years of Priesthood.

• Jane Wardman reported that renewal of CRB registrations is due by June 2009. She will organise a rolling programme starting in January.

• The theft of a purse belonging to Pat Dransfield in church whilst she was working on the flowers was reported. The DCC agreed to make a donation to Pat to recompense her to some extent for her loss.

• Elizabeth Cummings reported that Suzanne Dufton has agreed to take over responsibility for the Fairtrade goods in church when she leaves for China. The Vicar took the opportunity to thank Elizabeth for her many contributions to life at St Mary’s over the years – Sunday Club, Coffee Waggon, Fairtrade Stall, PCC and DCC.

The meeting closed with the Grace at 9.30 pm.

Updated Church Website

www.honleystmary.org.uk

(The above address is still valid and it redirects to the new site at www.honleystmary.btik.uk)

Work has taken place and is ongoing to update the church website and John Dean would be pleased to receive material to upload onto the new site. Our web presence has already generated several enquiries from people wishing to get married, searching for ancestors and finding old acquaintances – all because they were able to ‘google’ keywords and they were directed to our site. With the addition of the church’s coming events and an enhanced history and information section we hope the updated site will encourage more people to find out about St Mary’s and perhaps become involved in the Church Community.

The October AD Meeting was held on Thursday 9th October. The young people created an ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’ collage under Sue Clay’s guidance, linked to the Church’s Harvest Festival. There was some really enthusiastic singing using words, tapes and actions from ‘Build Up’ (Fishchy Music) focussing on the specific item ‘You Are A Star’. Fun was had by all with the games. The children made the decision to support the Koala Klub at Kirkwood Hospice as the chosen charity for this coming year. We look forward to seeing young people aged 8 to 12 years at the November meeting on Thursday 13th November at 6.30pm in church.

OTHER ITEMS

We all a need a tree I hired a plumber to help me restore an old farmhouse and after he had just finished a rough first day on the job, a flat tyre made him lose an hour of work, his electric drill stopped working and his ancient truck refused to start. While I drove him home, he sat in stony silence. On arriving, he invited me in to meet his family. As we walked towards the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands. When opening the door he underwent an amazing transformation. His face was wreathed in smiles and he hugged his two small children and kissed his wife. Afterwards he walked me to the car. We passed the tree and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do earlier. “Oh, that’s my trouble tree,” he replied. “I know I can’t help having troubles on the job, but one thing’s for sure, those troubles don’t belong in the house with my wife and the children. So I just hang them up on the tree every night when I come home and ask God to take care of them. Then in the morning I pick them up again. Funny thing is”, he smiled, “when I come out in the morning to pick them up, there aren’t nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before.” Perhaps we all need a tree outside our door?

Words from Mother Theresa People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centred; Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies; Be successful anyway. If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; Be honest and frank anyway. What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; Build anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; Be happy anyway. The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; Give the world the best you've got anyway. You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God; It never was between you and them anyway.

Hard Times A new prayer published by the Church of England aims to help people caught up in the current difficult financial situation. Lord God, we live in disturbing days: across the world, prices rise, debts increase, banks collapse, jobs are taken away, and fragile security is under threat. Loving God, meet us in our fear and hear our prayer: be a tower of strength amidst the shifting sands, and a light in the darkness; help us receive your gift of peace, and fix our hearts where true joys are to be found, in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen
