Dear Friends

I can’t believe that the year is going by so fast. August gives

way to September and the year changes from Summer to

Autumn; from light nights to long nights, from balmy Summer

days (poetic licence) to Autumnal coloured landscapes. The

world turns and the seasons change.

There are several certainties in this life which affect everyone

living on this planet, one of them being change. Everything but

everything changes, nothing stays the same.

Change is not just confined to places and landscapes, it happens

to each one of us as we already know. We all get older, maybe

wiser, certainly greyer and some of us even balder. The ravages

of time affect us all.

However change is not just a physical thing, it should also occur

in our spiritual lives as well.

Over the last 50 years we have seen the Church’s liturgical life

change as well; in the way we sing, in the way that we pray, in

the way that we just sit and wait on God and in the way we are

with each other and with God.

There is only one thing that remains constant both in life and in

death and that is GOD and his love and care for his people.

Throughout the whole of the bible we see the people of God as

a travelling people. In the Old Testament they are constantly

being led towards him, by the patriarchs, prophets and Kings.

In a way, the New Testament changes up a gear when God sent

his son Jesus to be the way the truth and the life.

One of the common factors of both the Old and New

Testaments is that knowing God changes peoples lives.

As Christians we have an obligation to know God more clearly.

The closer we move to God the more we will get to know him and

what his will is for each one of us.

Being a Christian is not an easy option. However it is an exciting

and challenging way of life that will change us as we grow nearer

to the God who loves us and has made us his children

Millennium Book Prizes

The 11th awards of Book Prizes to schools within the Parish were made before the end of the Summer Term. Staff at each school selected a pupil or pupils who they felt had made excellent all-round progress throughout the year (not academic success only).

PARISH NEWS

A New Offertory Card Last month we extolled the benefits of giving by Standing Order and we want, wherever possible, to encourage this method of giving. However, it does have one major drawback – there is nothing to put on the Offertory Plate when it comes around! This is a serious issue for those amongst us who value the spiritual symbolism of placing their giving on the Offertory Plate, and having their own gift included when these are offered to God. It is also probably true that those who give directly to the Church feel embarrassed or uneasy when the Plate is passed, or even find extra money to put on the Plate. If this extra giving was included in the Standing Order we may also be able to increase it still further via Gift Aid. We have decided, therefore, to introduce a yellow “offertory card” for use by those who give directly by Standing Order. The new card can be picked up at the back of the church before the service begins, and used when the Offertory Plate is passed. The use of the card is, of course, entirely optional. Please look out for the new card from September onwards. Please ask if you want advice or information on this or any other aspect of giving.

Report on the DCC Meeting held on July 20th

The meeting was attended by 16 DCC members and opened by the Vicar with prayer. In the absence of Ian Walter (Treasurer), the Secretary summarised his report. The meeting was presented with the financial figures for the first 6 months of the year up to June 30th. Income had been boosted by a legacy of £1,000 and tax reclaimed under the Gift Aid scheme amounting to £9,221. In spite of this and our decision to withhold some of the Common Fund for the year, the forecast end-of-year situation is for a deficit in the region of £2,500. During discussion of ways to improve matters the point was made that many members of the congregation do not appear to be aware of the seriousness of the situation. The Finance and Property Committee report concentrated on the problems relating to the need to replace the boiler and heating system. Four quotations had been received ranging from £31,750 to £43,369 (plus VAT in all cases). It was resolved that a fund-raising group be established with the aim of raising £40,000 and that the work go ahead as soon as half the amount has been raised. Thanks were expressed to Mr Bill Tankard who has agreed to put his fundraising experience towards our efforts and will lead a group of 3 or 4 volunteers. The Vicar had received requests from two organisations to use the church for concerts. It was agreed that we should ask for donations from the groups for church funds, rather than make a charge initially and review the system in future if necessary . For the Worship Planning Group Jane Wardman reported reviewing past services, especially the very successful visit by the Infant School Choir, and planning future events. Two projects are in hand – consideration of All-Age Worship and up-grading of the audio-visual system in church.

Men's Society - Walk and Supper in July Many thanks to all who supported our annual walk. We were fortunate with the weather. From your feedback, I believe you had a very enjoyable evening. Your contributions for supper raised £130 for church general funds. It was pleasing to share the evening with walkers and non walkers and with our ladies.

Pat Green for the Pastoral Care Group reported little response to the request for information relating to people who may need a visit. Efforts are being made to set up a rota of drivers willing to supply transport for elderly church members needing to visit relatives in hospital or nursing homes. The Vicar reported that the Spirituality Group is planning a questionnaire to investigate views on spirituality. On the topic of church cleaning Pauline Adams said that the system was working satisfactorily but that more volunteer helpers are needed especially when she and John are away. It was agreed that a further review will take place in three months time. In the meantime any volunteers will be warmly welcomed. Under Any Other Business Clive Waind raised the question of keeping the outside church doors open to allow public access to the porch with a view of the church interior through the glass doors which would remain locked. This has been agreed in principle before but has proved difficult to put into practice. It was agreed to leave the doors open on Sundays between the morning service and Evening Prayer for a trial period.

Concert for the Boiler Fund

A concert has been provisionally arranged for Saturday 16th October to raise money towards the Boiler Fund. Honley Band, with invited soloists, will entertain the audience with an enjoyable programme of well known items. More details next month.

Honley Parish Church Boiler As you may have heard in Church, read in the DCC Report or seen in the article in the Huddersfield Examiner - St Mary’s boiler needs replacing. Here is the history of the boiler. The Boiler house of the church is approximately five feet below the level of the path and is entered by a fixed metal ladder, which was very inconvenient when the old coke boiler was in use. Coke had to be thrown down into the boiler house and the ash from the boiler had to be lifted out. When, therefore, the gas boiler which had been in use for a number of years at Kayes Drapers in King Street, Huddersfield, was being replaced, it was offered to the church by Mr. Kaye in the late 1960’s. A gas supply had then to be installed in the boiler house from St Mary’s Road and the gas boiler was brought into church and installed. This boiler has served the church faithfully since then, that is for the last 40 years, but, unfortunately now as it burns a great deal of gas, which is very expensive to the church and as it is so old no more adjustments can be made to make it more efficient, a new boiler will have to be installed. Additionally, just recently a further problem has risen with the boiler itself. It leaks! However, as the pipe work throughout the church is approaching 100 years old all this will have to be renewed, which brings the estimated cost to approximately £40,000.

We were pleased that Bessie Drake was able to attend our August meeting on her 98th birthday. It was unfortunate that a number of our members were unable to attend due to illness or holidays. Thanks to Pauline Adams and Jean Hadley for transporting Bessie. Angela Byram’s talk made us all realise how important it is to raise money for the Literacy Project in Uganda, Burundi, Malawi and Sudan. During the last decade MU received help from Comic Relief, but that money has now run out. Comic Relief have pledged more money for the next ten years but this can only be used for the people of the Sudan and MU needs money to keep the project going in the three other countries. It makes so much difference to the people in these areas if they are taught to read and write and some simple numeracy. MU Members will all have received a letter and an envelope in which to make their donations. Jean Chadwick has produced a fundraising Quiz Sheet towards this project (available from the back of church), for members and friends to take. Please place your donation in the box provided. Results will be announced at our Coffee Morning in September. The Coffee Morning will be on Wednesday, September 22nd from 10.00 am to 12 noon in the Parish Room. As well as a raffle and the usual stalls you will be able to view and order MU Christmas cards. Please support this event which raises money for MU Worldwide. The change of date is to avoid clashing with the MU “Wave of Prayer”. Our session of prayer for MU Worldwide will be 10.10 am to 10.40.am on Wednesday, September 1st following the usual 9.30 am service in church. On this day there will be no evening meeting. The new MU Committee is working hard to keep the branch going. Please support them in any way you can.

Inspiration Marian and I would like to thank all those who sent their prayers and good wishes when Marian was in hospital for a hip replacement. She is now well on the road to recovery. Thank you. We would also like to recommend anyone having difficulties in purchasing any aids to help mobility etc to consider ‘Lazarus Mobility Solutions Limited’, New Mills, Brougham Road, Huddersfield, HD7 6AZ telephone 07739 793414. The latter was given to us on a list from the hospital. We wanted a lightweight reacher and phoned. Not only did ‘Steven’ (surname still unknown to me) get us one, he delivered it himself on a Saturday afternoon. More importantly Steven suffers from Muscular Dystrophy and is greatly disabled himself, including his speech. He has set up his business ‘to be helpful’ and is hoping for example to contact organisations in Romania. Not once did he complain of his own difficulties, he was extremely cheerful and ‘no problem’ was his favoured expression even when struggling over our steps. ‘I am here to help’, he said. The fact that he was going to charge us only the catalogue price and not ask us for any delivery charge says a lot too. He was an inspiration. He has no idea I am writing this.

St. George’s Diary of ‘cultural’ Events this month

Music - Huddersfield Choral Society Junior Choirs

We are delighted that the children's/junior choirs have agreed to sing for us in September as one of our fundraising events towards St George’s Church 150th Anniversary in 2013. The young singers (aged 7-21) under the guidance and encouragement of their musical director, Susan Wilkinson, will present a wide ranging programme of choral and solo items. Saturday 18th September at 7.15pm in St. Mary’s Church. Do support this excellent concert performed by young people, two of whom are in the St George’s Church Choir. God’s whisper to me The following poem was inspired by Phil Bevan who responded to God's call to take aid to Myanmar after the floods there. God whispered in my ear one day And said how it would be I shrugged and turned away and said “No way, you can’t mean me!” Next time it wasn’t a whisper He spoke quite loud and clear He had a job for me to do He said “have faith, don’t fear”. So I took the challenge offered But how should I begin? This task was much too big for me I had to trust in him. When the problems overwhelmed me And I couldn’t see my way I’d put my faith and hope in Him Fall to my knees and pray. And my God, he never failed me Through good days and through bad He filled me with a courage I never knew I had.
